I was there that night and the weather was foggy light rain with very low cloud cover. Four of us were playing poker in the barracks when someone barged into our room and said a plane had crashed just North of the airport. One of the guys knew the area and roads around the airport since he lived not far away. We four jumped into his car and came upon the crash site. We all thought we were going to a small plane crash....from a distance we could see fires scattered around a large area. I had just turned 20 that April 1966. Most of the passengers who died were about my age....young Soldiers. May they all RIP.....
My best friends father was Bill Marr, the co-captain of this flight. He was also the co-captain on the Beatles tour. We occasionally look through all the photos and 8mm movies Mr Marr took while on the Beatles tour, as well as the thousands of photos and hundreds of 8mm movies he took all over the world during his flying career. The Fab Four even came to their home in Ardmore for dinner one evening. She has had to live with this since she was 9 years old and still has nightmares about it. She and her mother were at the airport waiting for the flight to arrive that night. They heard the aircraft make the go-around on the first approach, then they saw the fireball when it hit the ground during the second approach. Mr Marr was flying for American Flyers for only a short number of years while he was awaiting their final move to Dallas as he was to be a senior pilot for American Airlines on the Boeing 707 flying out of Amon G. Carter Airfield(Greater Southwest). Prior to moving to Ardmore, their family lived in Olean, NY and Mr Marr was chief pilot for Clark Brothers and then Dresser Industries when they merged in 1956. He flew many aircraft types during this period including DC-3, Grumman Mallard, Gulfstream G-I as well as the Boeing 707 and the Lockheed Electra. He flew transports in WWII in the Army Air Corp. After the crash he was buried in Ardmore, but was later interred at the DFW National Cemetery. His daughter still painfully misses him to this day. They were not just a father and daughter, they were also best friends and he was always taking her on many of his shorter trips. She eventually went to work as a flight attendant for Braniff and then Southwest Airlines. After leaving Southwest, she started working for herself as a contract corporate flight attendant and started an accredited flight attendant training school in Arlington, TX. She is retired now, enjoying her time with her friends and her two German Shepherds Ajax and Jetta. Reed Pigman was a horrible individual. My own family has been in the aviation business since the 40's and knew him beginning in the 50's and always said he was not fit to fly. It's unfortunate it took this to stop him.
Of course I speak only for myself but I very much appreciate learning of accidents that haven’t been covered a thousand times. I was completely unaware of this accident. Thanks.
@@MPCFlightsI agree with Carolus, your channel deserves lots of subscribers. I’ve only just discovered it, I’ve subscribed now and set the alarm bell. As others have said, very very sad though each of these accidents is, it’s very refreshing to see your featuring of these ones which we’ve never heard about. Most similar channels just keep doing the same accidents over and over, the famous ones. We all need to see these lesser known ones, to understand what went wrong, to learn, and to then pay respects to those lost in the tragedies. Thanks for what you do.
This is the only video i have found about this crash. Good video. This crash is the deadliest in Oklahoma(where I am from) history. You would think that the deadliest crash would have been in Oklahoma City or Tulsa(Oklahoma's largest cities), not Ardmore. There is British airline crash where heart disease is also suspected, but the pilot had not lied about his health in that case.
At less than 2000 ft, not much time to correct things, First officer was busy watching for runway...what a terrible time to have a heart attack. Falsifying medical situation cost him his life and all the other victims. Sad such an experienced pilot thought he could disobey safety rules, more than sad, very, very tragic. Sad it always costs so many lives before improvements are made to prevent these things. Video is one I have not seen before, very well done.
Pigman just had to keep flying & rake in as much pay as possible so he lied on his medical records and killed 78 guys age 17 to 20 years old. Criminal.
He wouldn't have lost his income as he was the president of the airline. He would have lost his flight status. No excuses, however there is no mention of how many employees or aircraft AFA had at the time. It may have been more of a lack of other pilots that caused the president to falsify his medical condition. Still tragic. US medical certification changed after this accident. As horrible as it was, the 83 who lost their lives changed US aviation. FYI: it is an NDB approach, which is flown using the ADF in the aircraft. It is not an ADF approach. The ground based radio transmitter identifies the type of approach, not the receiver in the aircraft.
@@TroyHoffman-7m2 What a tragic story. I appreciated how you tried to explain the possible reason why Pigman still flying, that perhaps there was not an available pilot, but I wonder about that, too. Regarding a NDB approach, is that also called a VOR approach. I am learning to fly on a Cessna 172 Skyhawk and have so much trouble with VOR approaches.
@SWExplore VOR approach is different from an NDB. Before GPS many remote airports were supplied with inexpensive NDBs. Many ILS had NDB used as a part of the approach. VOR approaches and non precision approaches require situational awareness. Always keep the big picture in focus while flying ANY approach...especially non precision approaches. Takes time FB and UA-cam shouldn't be EVER used for information. Use your flight instructor!
There is now a flight scholl called American Flyers, I believe in Florida. When I was at Evergreen for a short time, one of my instructors worked at American Flyers.
How come he fell on the yoke !!… The pilots are supposed to be strapped in their seats at least during take off and landing procedures … I don’t get it.
FACT ! If gluttony - the sin of overeating & resulting poor health caused the Captains heart attack, then his lack of Self-Control at the table was an inadvertant but direct cause of 88 deaths. I'd also add that this is a lesson for SIC First Officers to be in "Code Yellow / Orange" mode in the critical landing phase of flight. Meaning having great caution & attentiveness - ready to grab controls and say "my aircraft", post haste.

Wow, thanks for that info. I was stationed at Ft Benning myself in the 80's, 11BP.

AFA ferried the Beatles around on their 1965 US tour and, of course, Pigman elected himself to fly the Fabs.

The Staines 'Trident' crash
BEA 548. Some witnesses testified captain Key was involved in a heated argument prior to the flight.
May all the victims rest in peace 🙏 Thank you very much for sharing this.

Great job MPC from El Espinal Tolima Colombia and excellent video
The pilot falsified his medical records so he wouldn't lose his job and then 88 passengers died for his selfishness 😮
83 people died

I goof on the amount of passengers on the plane but still 83 innocent people dying is beyond tragic.

Wow that had to be scary. You should do a video about TWA 514 if you haven't yet
probably the worst moment to have a heart attack :(
With his medical conditions, he should have expected it but chose to be selfish.
the 2nd worst being the minute you realized you won the lottery
@@danielkokal8819 ha ha, maybe even worse actually!

No, he did crashes of all the times but they are in his original channel in Spanish.

Thanks! I have videos from modern times too tho
Nothing wrong with older incidents. A video of eastern airlines flight 304, 1964 in New Orleans would be welcome
Can u do the Uberlingen mid air collision ?
The cvrs of both planes were released
Will do sometime later.
It had a PSA paint job from the 70s?

THOU SHALT NOT FALSIFY MEDICAL RECORDS! YOUR PASSENGERS LIVES ARE AT RISK!
Medical means physical and mental records.
People tend to think people with depression should be exempt. For some strange reason
Ouch...RIP
So Pigman wasn't strapped up; and could a strapped pilot fall over his controls in such a case of incapacitation?! Rather weird.
the electra looks like the VANGUARD !!
Your videos are great but those constant spinning around openings are annoying, sorry.
Make a video about March 18, 1982 Plane crash where Randy Rhoads was in it.
Will do it later

This happened in April 1966.
A detail the flight channel woukdnt have left out
You can clearly see the date at the beginning of the video.
Yup. I hope you don’t have a Pilots license
