The new "Flatten" path operation in Inkscape is a time saver

- When Inkscape released version 1.3 earlier this year, a new path operation known as "Flatten" was included.
"Flatten" is useful because it allows you to create new paths based on the visual appearance of multiple overlapping paths. This is something that could always be done using a sequence of path operations, but this new feature streamlines it into a single execution.
A good example of when this would be useful is when creating things like mandalas and abstract icons, which I'll be demonstrating in this tutorial.

My mind is blown, I didn't even know you could duplicate objects etc. using the spacebar. You already get a thumbs up
Spacebar is like a copy paste, making a unique element, if you use C it clones them instead, then Amy change you make to the original will automatically apply too all the clones, both super useful shortcuts. So for example if you make a fancy star, then clone it and put say 10 fancy stars in the sky, if you want to make a change to the colour gradient or whatever you only have to do it on the 1 and it will apply to all, obviously this can be a pain sometimes too if you don't want it to apply to all so I only use clone in certain instances otherwise I use spacebar, ctrl C ctrl v, or ctrl D to duplicate, duplicate can be good because it places the new object directly above the old, so you can use outset and page down to lower ot being the original to get perfect offset background that stays pointy and doesn't go all rounded and still like using linked or dynamic offset
Listing your voice after a very long time, and it is very soothing to my ears.
he reminds me of Steve Jobs honestly 😅
holy crap thats awesome. I hate working with the path tools. This will make it so much easier.
Thanks for the video. I love that new feature, it saves a lot of time. In the case of your figure, at min.2:00 approx, the also new function of repeating the last step makes the process faster.
Yes! this tool is amazing! it is almost like Illustrator's shape builder tool, which was a huge time saver in that program. Honestly, that tool was the only thing preventing me from fully transitioning to Inkscape, but now that's not a problem anymore! can't wait to see what other things they add to Inkscape to make it even better :D
This kind of response is why we spend so much effort getting shape builder into Inkscape 1.3, and I'm so happy it's a hit.
@@doctormo thank you for your work
This is gonna help me so much, thanks Nick!
¡Gracias Nick!
Thank you for these so much.
Thank you Nick!!
Thanks, Nick! Very nice. That will be a big help in my current project.
Another master tips ! 🔥
👏🏼👍🏼Thank you!!! This is going to make things so much easier!
Somewhat of a niche usecase, but this is the holy grail feature to make complex icons to use as a font. Insta-removes all the intersection errors, pretty awesome.
Nice new feature ! I had to do a bunch of snowflakes three days ago, i wish I knew that back then. Now i only crave for doing some more...
Woah, thanks for the heads up
Someone actually reads the docs I guess 😅
Im waiting for inkscape to add tools similar to what fusion360 has for sketches like circular pattern and coping features over a line to edit multiple things at once
Hey Nick,
Any chance you can demonstrate how to create a wallet patter with stitch holes or stitch lines that could be used with a laser to cut the leather. I have searched everywhere and not a single video for Inkscape plenty for AI though 😢
Is there a way to make a rhinestone template in inkscape?
How many lives do we need to learn all Inkscape features?
We don't know, because... as a developer for Inkscape, *we* don't know all the features and keep on stumbling on them in the code. Did you know you can wiggle the hue saturation and lightness around using the tweak tool? I didn't until I had to fix it last week.
How can I export 4k resolution .png vector images using inscape
Nice tip.
1:05 - I would expect you'd have execute 'object to path' first, before you can execute the 'flatten' operation, though...?
You don't have to convert it to a path any more in these later versions of Inkscape. The software already knows and does it for you. It works with text objects too.
can you please help me , when i clip 2 images jpeg or png, it shows nothing ( like its blank) there is still an outline of a object which i can move but i cant see anything . i have check my opacity and transperancy and they are 100%, 0% please tell me the solution
Great, but my circle never comes out like yours.
Boom Baby
Hey nick, i m facing an issue in inkscape. Within the preferences dialog box -> Interface -> Windows, dialog behaviour is set as docked still all the dockers are floating. I m unable to fix this issue, please help!
Edit - I ve restarted the app, OS, toggled the setting but nothing worked!
Have you tried clicking and dragging the labels of the menus over to the edge of the screen to pop them back into the dock? That's usually what I do.
@@LogosByNick yes, the ones dragged with labels get docked, others pop up on a seperate window!
When I open eps file saved from inkscape and try to open it in adobe illustrator the text becomes path... What can I do to make save them as editable text? Please help me
Check the Inkscape Preferences menu to see if there's a setting that automatically converts text to paths and disable it.
OMG! This is BRUTAL!
Noice
Sweet Baby Jesus.
I did a poll about the flatten path operation and it's output with stroke. Did you answer the poll?
