      There is a theory that the Polynesians, not the Siberian-descended indigenous North Americans, were actually the first humans to colonize South America. Polynesians are descended from the same line as Melanesians, and their languages belong to the same family. Melanesians possess a unique, recessive blond trait that differs from European blond (which is co-dominant with brown). The mixture of this trait with the dominant black hair trait produces red hair. So if the indigenous peoples of Colombia had naturally occurring red hair prior to European contact, they most likely would've gotten it from a long-dormant Melanesian blond trait.

    Yeah hispanics/latinos tend to be very genetically diverse, even within the same family. They often carry recessive genes for blond, red, blue eyes, green eyes, skin color, etc. I turned out paler with red + brown hair while my siblings have darker tones and wavy hair. Our parents don't have these traits but clearly passed them down. It's always interesting to see how random the kids turn out lol

  • @kishymishy5718
    @kishymishy5718 7 місяців тому +15

    Biology Major: the recessive gene coding for red hair can actually be found in the family’s legacy tree - it’s a technique used to identify certain genetic diseases or phenotypic traits. So there is a possibility that one of the grandparents originally had red hair - which is why she has inherited. :)

    One of my cousins has red hair and paler skin, despite being Hispanic, so I wouldn’t doubt that Pepa would have the same gene, even though she’s from Columbia and not Mexico.
    I think the gene was either a factor of colonization from her ancestors, or a mutation like how blue eyes are technically a mutation.
