  • The Owl House has some amazing characters, and Belos is, arguably, the best villain from a Disney cartoon in recent years. So how did Philip Wittebane, a human from the 1600s, become a monster who is so committed to achieving his scheme

What I love about Belos is how many villain forms he takes as a character. We see him in the first season as the mysterious masked tyranical ruler, we can only guess what lures behind that mask, all we get is a blue flaming eye and mud like tentacle outbursts.
Then we see him as an older kind looking man with long hair, like some kind of wise mentor, we see him as Phillip, a 16th century chap that reminds me of Charles Darwin with long beard and the curiosity of an adventurer and a explorer. In the episode in which Luz and Hunter are in his mind we get the creepy little Horror kid trope with Belos as a child wearing a mask, then we see his mudlike straight up monster form resembling a fucked up swamp-Wendigo, which was hintet at with his outbursts, in that form he is straight up an animalistic beast, hunting its prey. Then we also see him in his for him normal clothes. He is an old man with ponytail and nice uniform from the colonial times, we see him as just an arrogant and evil but stylish and classy gentleman villain. And then his final form which I dont think we need to talk about. Belos is awesome.

I feel the same. His character was built up very well over the first two seasons, yet it felt they did very little with him in the third season. No flashbacks or memories, no final encounter with Hunter, Philip never saw those hallucinations/ghosts again, etc. While his ending felt fitting, it also felt there was no proper or memorable closure to his character.

A very great and informative retrospective of the life of Philip Whittebane aka Belos. He was just too close-minded to accept change and is just not likely to redeem himself. After everything he has lost, Philip still persists on living and trying to bring about genocide to all of the denizens of the boiling isles. He's even trying to take advantage of the Collector again in order to get their body and power. If Philip succeeds, it could mean the end of everyone on the boiling isles. I honestly think that Philip will go down for good in the end, but only time will tell.

Even in 1600s New England, Philip was still a genocidal maniac with no hope for redemption. He was a witch hunter. His character was based off of Matthew Hopkins, who tortured false confessions out of women and was responsible for up to hundreds of deaths. Not only that, but for those witch trials in New England? They'd collect evidence against the accused using methods described in a book that Hopkins published, called "The Discovery of Witches".
This mindset is all he's ever known. I think Caleb was one of the only people that Philip had ever viewed as an actual person.
(Bonus fun fact: one method of witch-testing that Hopkins would use involved slicing the accused's arm with a dull knife, and if they didn't bleed, they were a witch. When Philip stabbed Caleb, he bled.)

An important part in making a good villain is making them complex and terrifying. Just seeing Belos can scare me he's that scary and seeing his story makes him that much more complex. His writing is some of the best on the show too. This is exactly why he's one of the best villains of all time

A missed opportunity. His character was built up really well in the first two seasons, then it's all kind of forgotten in the third season except for the "kill all witches" obsession. No flashbacks, no last encounter with Hunter, no hallucinations/ghosts of Caleb and the past grimwalkers. I feel they could have cut some time from the Collector's scenes to fill out Philip's character. It doesn't change he's a monster but we really should have seen more of his past, his brother and Evelyn.

Actually, given he originally set off on the isles to save caleb from Evelyn, it doesn't sound like Philip Actually intended to kill caleb at all as part of his "plan".
It sounds more like he was originally just going to target Evelyn and Caleb stepped in and ended up hurt instead.
Making it less of a backstabbing and more of heat of the moment situation.
Because it sounds extremely unusual for Philip, whose ungodly attached to his brother and set out to rescue him, would decide to hurt caleb before Evelyn.
Its not completely clear from the images obviously, but it makes way more sense that Philip never intended to hurt caleb given it gives him more motivation for his actions.
That caleb never would of died if it weren't for witches.
Not to mention killing caleb was shown to be one of Philip's most traumatic memories, which makes more sense if he hadn't done it intentionally.
Not to mention adds way more tragedy to the whole thing.

    • @JH24821
      @JH24821 Рік тому +15

That's a very good theory. It would also explain Philip's hallucination (or ghost) of Caleb with the bloody dagger above his head. Philip blames the witches for his brother's death, but it's like Philip's conscience is taunting him with the hallucinations "It wasn't the witches. It was you." But if Philip would ever admit that he killed his brother, that it was because of him Caleb died; he could very well suffer a mental breakdown.

They as kids were taught that witches are the worst brings in existance and must be destroyed so when sphillip saw that his own brother betrayed him by loving a witch, it had to end this way. I stand by phillip, I'd have done the same thing he does, he's protecting humanity from witches as they possess power a lot stronger than that of a human, if witches decide to expand or control the dimensional rift, it will be bad for humans.

Great video. If I have to guess, how his story is going to end, now this is potential spoilers for the finale, but I think Eda will have to face against possessed Raine and try to free them without hurting them.
As for how I think they’re going to defeat Belos. Well, I think Luz and King are going to be successful with redeeming the Collector. Plus, with Luz finally coming to terms with herself and when she learns about the Collector’s backstory, she will realize that killing a child wouldn’t be the best option.
Once the Collector joins the Hexsquad, we get an epic battle and we finally get to see the demise. As for who will kill him, I have a few options.
Luz: Where she will use Stringbean in order to kill him with her magic blast.
Hunter: As revenge for all the years he torment and for killing Flapjack.
Caleb and the Grimwalkers: Where they will drag him down to the other side.

I think he still could technically be redeemed, and I hope he does, as in order for Luz and Camila to get back, he’s the only one who knows how to build a portal door, so I think he could have atleast a partial redemption arc

Punishing him harshly for not conforming to or fitting in the "proper perspective" and effectively traumatizing Philip into his current mindset. No pulling punches! I want the end goal to be for the main characters and the viewers to look at him and go "Wow... No wonder why you came out the way you did. I still don't forgive you for what you did, but now... I don't know about you, but I think Bellos/Philip is a cooler villain than Andrias.
And much, much cooler than Core which is an example of wasting a villain who, in my opinion, could have been great, but alas we just got a cartoonish, not serious villain who is just another megalomaniac who wants to conquer, for some reason, cheers everyone , quite original, there are no other 1000 villains who want the same, top villain.
Don't get me wrong, I think Andrias is great, he is a very well built character and has a super cool voice.
But I think Belos is better.
First of all, realistically, Bellos has managed to kill a lot more people than Andrias, and at the same time really kill them and not stab them with a sword and then bring them back like it happened with Marcy, his brother, all the grimwalkers who ate the ax , and that he has murders on screen as well such as the scene where he brandishes a small crowd of people, paralyzes them and just leaves them to die in the cold like dogs, the murder of Flabjack and all the other palismans he has killed some of them also on screen, apart from almost committing mass genocide and also if the collector had not appeared in time he would have killed a group of children without batting an eye.
The second thing that I really like about him is that he is always serious, there is not a single moment where he behaves cartoonishly or tells jokes like, for example, the aforementioned Andrias, Bill, the Core and many other Disney villains who, of course, are funny and cool, but it makes them less threatening and you don't perceive them as a real threat.
The third thing I like about him the most is that there is no redemption for him / at this point and I highly doubt they'll involve this at the end because it wouldn't make any sense in the context of the story / , He's the type of old fashioned villains who stick to their goals until the end, I personally missed these types of villains in Disney animations, they are the coolest. He as a real person, a total piece of shit that no matter what you do, he won't give up until you kill him like Scar and Frollo.
AGAIN, I like Andrias, but I didn't like this redemption a bit, I know it ties into the theme of the show and stuff, but it ended up being a little meh , i mean , how we're going to defeat the bad guys, well, with the power of friendship of course that's the key to everything. it's well built for the character, but it's still a little meh to me. FRIENDSHIP IS NOT THE KEY TO EVERYTHING FOR GOD'S SAKE. It would be much better if he was bad until the very end like Bill Schiffer for example , but whatever , it's OK .

      1. Do you think Belos managed to kill more people than the Core (to whom he's a parallel as well as one to Aldrich, since Andrias is a parallel to Hunter) did?
      2. Regarding your issues with Andrias' redemption and using the power of friendship to defeat the villains, we already have the Core (who's only funny as Darcy, and completely serious and threatening in any other form, and who absolutely WILL NOT give up its desire to conquer and plunder other worlds of all their resources to get ever more power) and its demise via a triple fully Calamity-powered Anne to take care of that. Andrias never really wanted to commit all the crimes he did, he just wanted a way back to his friends and the true happiness he got from their time together, but he felt like all those atrocities were his only available route to please the mind hive (like betraying and stabbing Marcy against his will), and he happily accepted his sentence of community service for life in the end (which is also a reward for him as it gives him a second chance at deriving real joy from his new actions). As the third season of _Amphibia_ unfolds, we see just how tragic that cryptobranchid cyborg really is-he's confined to his fake megalomania and chained to the Core's prison bench (that is, the throne), enduring A TON of abuse from that far beyond monstrous entity and trying to keep all his regrets hidden from its ever-watchful eyes (and a lot of them), which helped his redemption arc work within two long episodes. In my opinion, Andrias was never really evil, he was just a lonely old man forced down that path who needed the power of friendship to make him see the light of goodness again, which Sprig did by reading him Leif's letter and reminding him of her still hopeful feelings for him. (Sorry if I sounded too preachy or if this is too long, it's just a subject I'm really passionate about)
      3. Although Belos may be unrepentant, he still sees himself as the hero for ridding the world of "wild magic" (which is a smokescreen for his real intentions), which adds onto the "no intention of ever giving up until the very end" aspect of his character.

@@jjtheraccoon61 1. I agree with this, the core, most likely, managed to kill more people, most likely. But in my opinion, a more appropriate parallel to the Core would be the Collector, although the Collector is not evil, he plays more or less the same role, an anti-ionist figure, much more powerful than our current villain.
But I compared Belos and Andrias because, even though there is a villain over him, he definitely feels like the main one, at least because he is given more attention as a character development, / something like Darth Vader and Palpatine, obviously Palpatine is the great mega-villain who started everything and whose defeat will fix everything, but the entire story in Star Wars, at least in the first 6 films, is to see the fall of Anakin/Vedar and, accordingly, his redemption. The fact that there is someone above him in no way makes him any less of a threat.
      2. Apparently it sounded like a complaint that I said it would have been better if he had remained "evil". I'm sorry, I didn't express myself properly, I think his whole development as a character is great and he definitely deserved his redemption, I just think that if you're going to do such a twist, your other bigger villain needs to be built more as a threat to no disharmony is created when the redemption in question takes place. And like I said the Core could have been a great villain, and as a concept it's great, but at least in my opinion, the way he was presented to us as a character, he was stretched way too far in the wrong direction. At least in my opinion, the problem with the presentation of the Core was, first of all, they wanted to do two things at once, both to be some kind of antagonist who behaves sinisterly, plays with other people's minds, manipulates them, hides in the shadows and so on, and also in at the same time be funny and tell jokes constantly and talk cartoonishly at times. And the juxtaposition of these two total opposites fights with each other and creates a kind of mess. It's not like Bill, who was scary mostly because of his powers, not so much because of anything else, who was completely comedic and did just that without mixing menacing and comedic in the wrong way, there was no real attempt at seriousness with him like personification, and it turned out great. And the second big problem with the Core was that he had too little screen time proportionally compared to the others, and never showed any interesting motivation on his part. It was literally, well, I want to conquer, because I decided to and I'm evil, but now I've been defeated and that's why I'm abgrating, I won't conquer anymore, now I'm going to make my own world end, because reasons. It was literally that. They just didn't do it right, in my opinion.
      3. First of all, I don't think that Bellos does not repent, rather the way I see it is that he refuses to repent of his mistakes, as was seen a few moments ago in the last episode that came out. The very fact that he continues to do these grimwalkers means that at least in some aspect this is dictated by unconscious remorse. And secondly, this is exactly what makes it interesting / the best villains are those who are evil to the end and don't give up, like Palpatine, Scar and Frollo for example, and those who sincerely believe that they are the good ones in the case like Thanos. Thanos was just like Belos, he was willing to throw away everything just to get his way, and he sincerely thought he was helping others in this way, apart from just like Belos, Thanos had motivations and background in his story that made his actions understandable, not necessarily justified or logical, but that's not so important when creating a character, it's not important whether what he does is logical or not, it's important that he has a motivation and that his morals are logical in his head. In that sense, it also makes Thanos and Belos anti-heroes and not villains like legit evil villains like the Core.

Well Belos had very goofy evil lines in final episode. This “You can’t defeat me” sound stupid. Also his death is threatened like a joke so yeah

@@sizar9003 wow, WHAT a good argument. I have to write this down somewhere, it sounds stupid, what an excellent argument - In case it wasn't clear, I'm speaking with sarcasm.
For starters, who exactly decides what sounds cheesy? Just to remind you that in Star Wars Return of the Jedi Episode 6, Palpatine, the big bad mega strong respectable space wizard says things like THIS - If you don't turn to the dark side then you will be destroyed. Your powers are nothing to the might of the dark side. And my favorite, oh, I'm afraid the shield will work pretty well when your friends come over. And the way Palpatine dies is literally this, Vader picks him up over his head while he keeps shooting lightning bolts and throws him into a hole and as he falls he screams in a ridiculous way that sounds like something out of a parody and then boom, he's dead , end . Yes, yes, this doesn't sound and look ultra ridiculous at all................. BUT I haven't heard anyone grumble about it for any reason. Do you know why? Because the film works and closes the story and character arcs as it should logically do. It's exactly the same here.
If you have a problem with something in the story, I have no problem with that, you are free and you have that right, but if we are going to argue about it, please let's bet on solid arguments more and more context and not bet on some stupid arguments, if at all possible to be called that. I also think that Despacito is an absolutely atrocious song, but my argument is not because it sounds stupid, for other reasons related to the objectively adequate ways in which you interpret a song. Although, yes, Despacito really sounds terrible, and I know everyone is going to argue with me, ok, bring it on, I don't care, this song sucks.

@@borislavangelov2933 first of we talking about orginal trilogy. It was 40 fucking years ago. Palpatine didn't have ANY backstory in these movies. He was just evil grandpa. It's basically the same thing as Andrias and Core. One villain have some redeemable qualities while he is being manipulated by other villain who is just evil for the sake of evil. Belos have backstory, and this backstory is the start of events of the show. You can't just not explain it. Because right now all events of the show started just because some random fuck wanted to be a hero. Why? How he came to this point? Why he was so attached to witch hunting? Why he was ready to kill his own brother? Why witch hunting was a thing in the first place? There is no answers for that. The only explanation is that he wanted to be hero, but he already saw the modern human realm. He knows that nobody knows about demons and witches, and that people think that witch hunters was total psychopaths. Then why he still want to be the hero? All this questions raised from absence of information and the fact that Belos don't show any reaction to Human Realm not making it better. Yeah Owl House finale make a closure, but which exactly character closed his arc by killing Belos? Raine? Eda? King? The answer is nobody. They just stand nearby so why not let them kill him. Oh and one more thing. When villain kill someone it's shown very scary, but when our main characters kill someone it's shown like a joke. I wonder why...

Ya, while i like belos as a character. I feel his backstory was weak. Mainly due to the fact that Witch hunting not properly represented. What witch hunting was a reaction to real life events that people could not actual understand. So they blamed out groups with motivations to harm or hurt the community for it. So when your child mysteriously gets sick and died. And you don't know that he just got bronchitis and they didn't have ability to cure it. You could blame the angry old hag that you pissed off for cursing the child.
That said in the owl house. Witches are an actual thing, and are an actual threat. To mid evil/turn of a the century civilization. Nothing in their right mind could actual stop it. Swords are worthless when your opponent can just blast your with energy. Armor gets torn apart by giant blob monsters or overgrown vines. And we know that the boiling isles is not as peaceful as you think it is. As if you look at the titan hunters, they would not hesitate to loot and pillage a few human settlements.
That said, this dose not actual appear to be the case. So i don't even know where they learned witches even existed? Or where the whole hatred thing even came form. It is a massive plot hole which kinda ruins his entire motivation. Because if he was just from a village that was attacked by marauding witches. Only for them to learn that not all witches are evil. Their would be some actual moral conflict. Can you forgive someone a group for something they did?
But this story is flimsy. To make matters worse the guy was willing to give up his own humanity. Becoming closer to the things he claims he hates. Only to think he could go back to his own world and everything would be fine. this is not a great way to handle this. Just saying society hates witches so he hates them. Is dumb as it dose not explain why they hate them. And no just saying they are different is not enough. As were talking genocidal tendency hear not just, eww people i don't want to associate with because their different. That is a bit of a big leap.
