      Good video, but can you clarify something for me, with the individual instruments responding to midi cc I take it this means I am able to pitch the kick 2 via a midi keyboard in order to play it as a bassline?

      I just want to say that the hi hats should be opposite because the open hihat mutes the open hihat but if you use them oposssite they work perfect they should say open hi hats in the close and opposite is just a tip I saw in other reviews like here i learn about that you can a make a repeating mode pressing the pattern and the slide of the cutting tempos in 1/4 1/16, etc…. That was a very good tip i didn’t know thanks a lot great video and try the hi hats thing you will see the closed don’t gonna mute the other ones or opposite just a tip and if you want to use how you explained that is good that silence it I think no not sound should cover the other one if not is like using one instrument less try and tell me what are your new sensation I think they make mistake printing the names or they dont realize like in other products is us that discover the gaps and sorted or complain with the company but hands up to Arturia I have the Drrumbrute the microbrute I love that little Beast and have a new hybrid beast the Microfreak just arrive me and is amazing with the actualization 3.0 you can use vocoder in the normal one so is super cool and they add a lot of new sounds is so complete in sintesis for it’s size and all that that small Beast do im impressed every time more and i just scratch the surface, great video Bro keep going i just subscribe you can subscribe in mine if you can please I don’t have too much but I’m gonna start to do it

    Thanks for such a great vid! It's so hard to believe that when I was a kid I used to thumb through a beat up copy of Keyfax from the library and dream of playing all the classic machines and now we're living in such a golden age of hardware again. These are glorious times to be making music!

    I am coming back 3 years later but if you haven't got a replacement motherboard for this unit it is likely covered by warranty from Arturia (extended warranty to cover this issue even if out of normal warranty period) Register it on the Arturia website with the serial number and unlock code printed on the back of the unit and check your support tab. They shipped me a replacement motherboard just last week. Apparently first generation boards were prone to failure with the noise generator effecting maraca, snare, tambourine. I thought I'd mention it given your video was influential in my decision to pick one up. Thanks for the video.

    Great review! I really appreciate that you've got some slinkier, groovier beats in this as opposed to the other vids I've watched. Showcases a more interesting side of the unit for sure!

      roboctopusmusic yeah it's really capable of a variety of styles. I did a gang of hip hop and boombap patterns for it but even I was surprised at the stuff the other designers had done when I got a production unit. It's flexible man it can touch many genres and styles. Thanks for watching I'm glad it was helpful

    Great review.
    I make more 70s sounding post-punk, kraut-rock, whatever kind of stuff. I was thinking to myself "Nah, the last thing I want to see is yet another DrumBrute review of hip hop beats, they won't even explore the kinds of sounds that I'm into." But then you covered everything that I really wanted to hear that no other reviewers have touched on yet. Perfect.
    I'm still hesitant to invest in it because it doesn't have patch memory, but it is a pretty sweet machine with it's own twist on a classic sound.
    Thanks man.

    • @keenanblack3958

      You can save your beats in the sequencer memory, but the drum voices themselves aren't recallable because those knobs are actually controlling the analog circuits directly. (So you can bring back a beat pattern that you saved but the actual sound of each drum will be whatever the knobs are currently set to.)

    • @SPAZZOID100
      @SPAZZOID100 7 років тому

      inthefade the 808, 909, DX, linn and most other classics had no patch memory either.

      They sure didn't. I'd still like patch recall in a modern drum machine.

    • @orbitalchiller
      @orbitalchiller 7 років тому

      @Keenan Black True but some new analog machine can save presets, eg the Korg Minilogue. When you load a preset, the knobs aren't representative of the sound loaded, but they have included a "load panel" option so you can "force" the sound to be as the knobs are turned.

    Great demo! See you have some Elektron gear next to it, bet they pair well. That's the main reason I plan on getting the DrumBrute so I can have some analog drums with the Analog Four. (Can't afford the RTYM) Also have the Microbrute which really does sound great! Hell, one could do a whole live set with just those and mixer, although I'd probably want to layer some sampled perc and whatnot from Ableton.

    Thanks for a great and informative review of the Drum Brute. I have been sold on the Drum Brute for the past week so as I have watched your video and other reviews plus I hooked it up to a Sub37 in the shop via MIDI to trigger the Moog sequencer and then I played lead on a Sub Phatty and had a great afternoon messing about with it so I am definitely getting one. Only thing is the need for a mixer with effects as the snare definitely needs processing but maybe what you showed with the individual out going to an effect might be able to do for a couple of weeks until I can get a proper mixer. Could that work and do you have any suggestions of mixers that would really enhance the sound of the kick and snare?

    • @Bboytechreport
      @Bboytechreport  6 років тому +1

      thanks for watching man. I'd probably get any modern mixer like mackie or something... even K-Mix my KMI. then I'd say use effects like moog boost or something as an insert effect to thicken it up

      @Bboytechreport  7 років тому

      Goth108 word! Good catch. Of course. So in that piece the drumbrute is being processed by my modular rig. Mostly by the did charater module with drive and a bit of bit crush. That's the thing hip hop drums need that extra umph and bite so i rock like that. But no this is a warm and less harsh drum machine. Examples of that elsewhere in the vid as I play programs uneffected

      Well my ears say that kick 2 sounds like something I coud use, but I'm not sure about kick 1, as I've not heard it do anything punchy. Could be a matter of settings of course.

    • @maccagrabme
      @maccagrabme 7 років тому +2

      Hang on you shouldn't need to put effects on a kick drum to get something more punchy. Might as well use a sample or Tr8 to get the sound I need. In fact I can use a cheap Korg Volca to get a better kick drum. They should have given us the ability to exactly mimic a 909 and 808 kick and snare and also the ability to warp those sounds to something different. This machine is a good idea on paper but too limiting for me, analogue isn't always better.

    • @ogasi1798
      @ogasi1798 7 років тому

      littlegee analogue isn't always better you're dead right and while you should not have to treat drums you must know that drum sounds are treated anyway, as are any other instruments, you wouldn't release a track with zero processing on the drums or other tracks, wouldn't happen. This thing in real life will sound much deeper than it appears, my opinion is based on being an old fart who has had many classic machines from the 80's and beyond and knowing how things translate. The only concern with this IMO is it appears that the decay on the kicks needs to be quite a bit longer when tuned low, it also seems a bit too unresponsive right now depending on other settings and I'm really hoping this isn't the case, fingers crossed and we will see in 6 weeks.

    • @inthefade
      @inthefade 7 років тому +2

      Most samples that you're used to using probably have compression and EQ on them. The 808 and 909 were usually used with some sort of effects.
      But Kick 1 has a controllable transient, which is usually what gives a BD it's "punch" IMO. It should be able to pull off something nice.

      Tim Miller I don't know for sure but my thought is this is likely related to the fact that the tr8 and tr9 are digital drum
      Machines. This is analog and so there are inherent technological limitations. Sure elektron can do it but their machines were purposely built and designed with overbridge in the plans. And even then it took them years to do that with an analog machine and they are the only ones to do it

      Most analog instruments don't do audio over USB because then the signal has to go through an A/D converter, which drives up the cost but also compromises the goal of keeping the audio path strictly in the analog domain.

    Most impressive review; You waste little to no time diving right in, and as a bonus, you communicate in plain language without the potty mouth, and as a bonus, your articulation in speech is superbly radio-ready, worthy of ginormous 'Thumbs Up'!
    Now, do tell us Arturia gearheads and beat-making devotees just what you meant when, toward the close at about 23:24, you indicated concerning the heavier [orange] colored events in the grid view: "...these are *accident* notes."
    I've heard of an *accidental* in piano playing but hadn't researched adequately what that is. What, specifically did you mean there?
    Thanks in advance.

    it doesn't sample? that sucks. it's 2016. To be able to sample and re-sample would be a dream situation. You can get these sounds anywhere today. Nice review.

    do you think arturia will software update were you could send audio to your daw via USB

      Nope. Most likely that would need extra internal hardware.

      Tim Miller yeah you would be better off just buying an audio interface with 8 1/4 " jacks and record 8 at a time like they do with drum kits at commercial studios.

    I don't like the TR8 or the DrumBrute but if I had to buy one it would be the DrumBrute pity it doesn't do audio out over the USB cable have more contemporary sounds and the brute filter then it would be worth my money maybe another company will fill the niche between the two and do it right what a drum machine that would be I'll save my money for now.

      alottawords no there's individual outputs

    • @alottawords
      @alottawords 7 років тому

      Blatend Crude yo my bad theres mono out mix and individuals outs for each instrument, for fine tuned mixing of your individual drums, which u could then make stereo by mixing it in a DAW. theres also a 1/4 inch headphone out, so technically u have 2 outs. so u could set it up with a stereo system that needs a left and right out to connect too, it would just be a mono track played on two speakers.

    • @alottawords
      @alottawords 7 років тому

      tekis0 i own it, there's individual outs and a mono output.
