This movie gave purpose to my life. At 23 I left Indiana for the west. In 11 months I will retire from the US Forest Service and have enjoyed a a career as a firefighter and law enforcement officer. Walking into a ranger station in Colorado asking for a job at 23 was the best decision I ever made. My career will end in North Idaho and I am friends with a colleague who grew up with Norman Maclean on Seeley Lake. I have no college degree and no regrets. I’ll never be rich with money, but I am rich in life’s experiences.
Must be nice to live back in the day where you could just ask for a job, and as long as you gave a firm handshake you were good as gold. Life isn't what it use to be, that is for damn sure.
You are so right. No one will take their money with them when they die. It's best to live a fullfilling life than being a slave, working 60 hours per week behind a laptop...not seeing your family, kids...barely taking any holidays. We only have today, we are not promised tomorrow, we should make the most of every single day.
This movie always meant so much to me. I lived on the Blackfoot when I was in my 20s. I loved the area and this movie brings back so much of that memory. I am pretty sure a lot was not filmed on the Blackfoot, but it still reminds me of a place I call home. And yes, I am a fly fisherman. Some of my best fishing trips were along that river, and all of my best fishing trips were in Montana.
Me & my brother want to go fly fishing. What river were you referring too? Sounds like some pretty good fishing, never been fly fishing but it looks wayyy cooler than regular fishing. lol
I know what you mean. I've walked the Pisgah National Forest, right where they filed "Last of the Mohicans". That' not where it took place historically, but at least I got a sense of the grandeur.
I loved it too. I have never been in the area or went Fly Fishing, but it captures it so beautifully to share and to relate the family and the appreciation. So much beauty in the person's and the place....just incredible.
His next biggest movie was the lead opposite a then-unknown Sandra Bullock, when sat on the shelf until after her mid 90's success. But only got a video release because she happened to have a topless scene. But I digress. Sheffer didn't have the career either Pitt or Bullock would end up having, which is a shame.
I disagree (respectfully). "Kalifornia" and "Legends of the Fall" are his best acting films. Brad even said in a recent interview that "A river runs through" was some of his worst acting. He said he gave a very lackluster performance. He felt he let Robert Redford down. That's him saying it, not me.
My favorite movie of all time. My family experienced a tragedy like that when my beautiful brother who was also a great fisherman took his life. I cry every time I watch this movie. Unforgettable landscapes and music.
When peace like a river attendeth my way When sorrows like sea billows roll Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say It is well, it is well with my soul
I always assimilate this movie with "Legends of the fall", maybe because I watched them at the same period. The soundtrack was great, the photography, the acting. I miss those 90's movies.
Favorite film of all time. Great cast, absolutely stunning locations that are beautifully captured by the camera, nice tranquil complex story and a lovely score
My favorite movie of all time. My family experienced a tragedy like that when my beautiful brother who was a great fisherman took his life. I cry every time I watch this movie. Beautiful landscapes and music.
One of my all-time favorite films since I was 14. As a Mid-Michigander, I had always dreamed of fishing the infamous Blackfoot and got my chance to several years ago while visiting a friend in Missoula. We fished near Thibodeau (sp?) Falls, and although the tubers were numerous, I was still successful in catching the only trout that day. It will forever remain in my memory.
90s movies were just so epic. I just watched the 1997 version of Lolita. Going to watch this tonight. There was just something grandiose but at the same time, earnest about movies of that era.
Marvel And Dc spoiled the old Hollywood charm where narration was awesome alongwith grandeur of music, what a cast ,one of my all time favourite movie ...Bradd Pitt in making💎
A few days ago I was remembering stream fishing with my Dad when I was young, I miss it. It made me think of this movie. Its been too long since Ive put on a pair of waders.
When this movie first came out to the movie theaters i did not go out and see it then. It wasn't until Thanksgiving night and when they showed it on the outdoor channel and that's when I first watched it and I was so blown away by it too. I think they need to do a anniversary for a river runs through it and put it back out into the movie theaters.
“A River Runs Through It” takes place in the state of Montana, like “Legends of the Fall”, which also starred Brad Pitt and was released two years after the former.
Very underrated movie... it teach the world we live in now will not last. what is important is that we live with a purpose, remember God, remember sin, never break God's command. there is a reason why gambling is not allowed in all religions. it not only brings sadness to oneself but to all family members. I hope Paul doesn't die and stop gambling and follow his brother to Chicago, but God has decided everything in our destiny. what remains is a beautiful memory when we are with our family members that will always bloom in our hearts.
I just watched this movie for the first time, why did I wait 32 years to see this gem?? An avid fisherman myself, the end of this movie struck such a note with me, especially as I get older....May I see things the way Norman did in the movie, when and if I reach that age...
I watched this movie on the year it came out and 19 years later, and I visited Montana for the first time. The natural scenery of Montana, especially the rivers in Bozeman Montana (it was filmed in Bozemen) looked exactly like in the movie.
I was just in Bozeman. It was such a God thing that I found out this movie was filmed in and around Bozeman the area. In hopes the Mayor of Bozeman has something to do with restoring the historic railroad depot. Wonderful people here....please keep the history alive. Such an amazing movie....a must see!
Concur. One of the best movies ever made. The scenery, photography, the music, the superb actors, the script, and direction, all come together in a masterpiece. Based on the book by Norman Maclean, also a work of art.
Never heard the name of this movie before. I was reading a book named LOVE FOR IMPERFECT THINGS and this movie was mentioned. I am gonna watch it asap and come back to edit my comment.
@@gwensaavedra3128 I love this movie, very much. But the way it came up with a brother, a family relationship and the beauty of Nature has made me sad, especially when we realize that the current situation is way different from the past.
Redford should have let Sheffer narrate since it was his character. Made no sense for Redford to do it. Direct the film and let the actors play their parts.
It was because the narration part it is from the future. It is the main character telling the story of his youth. I don't think it's that hard to understand.

Could be an age thing. I also saw it in 1992/1993 when I was about 14 years old and while I thought it was good, it did not particularly move or stick with me. I saw it again decades later and had an entirely new perspective. Sometimes age and life experience changes things a lot. I’ve had that happen with many films.
