How To Fix Rusty Cab Corners! The Heartwarming Journey Of A Neglected 1948 GMC
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 вер 2024
- Hey we are back on the 1948 GMC pickup rust repair. This time I will be replacing the cab corner. Although the video is about 1947-1954 Chevy or Gmc trucks, the process is largely the same for welding cab corners on any make or model of truck from any era including modern trucks. Aftermarket cab corners, when available, will always have some fitment issues, but they are often better than starting with nothing and can be manipulated to produce an acceptable repair.

Ive been fabbing in various sheet metal disciplines for 57 yrs. I learn at least 1 new thing every vid. Great channel. Great content. Thx for the effort.
Who says you can't teach an old bodyman news tricks? 😉 I'm usually told by old timers that they've forgotten more than I'll ever know!
@Glenn Nickerson I would never that. Met many a young man who has taught me a trick or two. If you get to the point where you think you know it all...........ur wrong! Lmao
@@flatrat48 just kidding! I wish I had a tenth of your talent! It's always good to learn something new--if only I could remember it! 😆
I'm glad to hear the videos are useful, thanks for taking the time to watch!
I think your channel is one of the best out there showing me a better way to do rust repair. I’m 74 and have just started doing some body work on my own. Thank you.
Thank you Gary, that's very kind of you to say! I'm glad to hear these videos have been helpful!
In case you guys missed it or don't know: content creators get paid more by UA-cam when viewers "watch" ads. Help a guy out. When an ad comes up, get up grab a beer, take a leak, and come back when the sparks are flying again. Great video as always!
Thank you, that's a great strategy! It's best not to be in the same room while the ads are playing haha
Never..knew about letting the Commercials play " ...👌🏻
Kyle! Another terrific repair, buddy! Only thing that gives it away is the nice door fit, haha! All the best as always from everyone here... Spin by anytime!
I'm going to make the drivers door overlap like a Model A to compensate for the charade on the passenger side!
Like seeing those old body work fixes that seem so crude today. A lot of brazing a lot of screen wire and straight enamel paint over crude putty work with 36 grit sand marks, pile on paint with the thought that there is a fine line between a run and a shine. I was there 50 + years ago doing that kind of work. Great job Kyle love watching.
Haha that sounds like a fun time, wish I could have been in the trade back then. Thanks Gary!
Ahhh, the Cut and Butt...nice work. Coming along nicely!
Funny about coddling, seems like one way or the other someone needs it.
Love the humor...the body work is a bonus. I also like the possible future content of cats and rants....that might be nice.
With Scott, I enjoy watching bits with his dog and with you, it's with the cats. Love it.
Glad you like the cats haha
From my experience working on older vehicles I swear that assembly men were issued two tools: a hammer and a crowbar. So much for those who say they don't build them like they used to.
Haha those are both precision assembly tools!
Agree. Working on my '51 Ford business coupe. I am finding the same things. looks slapped together.
Great work Carter.
Thanks Don!
Working on projects by yourself tends to suck, at least the camera is a pretend friend. I do enjoy your work and am learning more. I have always focused on the mechanical side, and now trying the bodywork side.
Thanks, I actually prefer working alone with no camera haha. Glad to hear you're getting into bodywork!
Great vid, again! Simple straight forward explanations (less rambling than you think) and some instruction. I like the newer production “values” you’re incorporating….. overdubs are great for Timelapse! If it allows more productivity on the project, it allows for more content on the channel.
Glad you’re scrapin’ a buck out of it… with the way the likes rarely reflect views.
Thanks! More productivity on the project is definitely a bonus!
Love watching your. Videos man. Your sense of humour is right up my street 😂
Thanks John, glad you enjoy my nonsense haha
Nice job on the video.......keep banging away at it. Looks like good parts of the project are coming up. Keeps me from doing my work and I'm all for that when it's cold. lols
I hear ya, it's tough to get motivated when it's cold!
I’m thinking another couple years and you’ll be traveling around doing burn out competitions lol. love it. Now coddle me dammit.
Hahaha! I guess I'll need to find a vehicle capable of doing a burn out!
I don't know if you are aware, but I am locally known as the area's worst gas brazer, so I appreciate you calling the worlds attention to my lack of skill. Personally, I don't mind the ads because every ad means I'm that much closer to the cat part of the show. Thanks for the mention, it's appreciated.
I'm not sure how large of an area we are talking about here, but you could potentially be the only gas brazer in that area, which would also make you the best gas brazer in said area.
@@CarterAutoRestyling I can always count on you to see the good in everything.
Thanks as always for sharing your talents.
Thanks for watching!
I was chuckling about your interest in seeing how things were repaired back in the day. I am not super old but I am the guy whose old repairs you would laugh at. I am learning but I still have a ways to go. Thanks for sharing. I am for sure learning from them.
As long as your learning there is no shame in the repairs you do! Thanks for watching!
That door fits better than the doors on the 2021 Ram 1500 I drive at work.
Thanks, yeah quality control on the new stuff has gotten pretty bad
Nice job! As usual. Thank you
Thanks!
I like your method of doing 3 spots then grinding. This allows it to cool a bit then also you can see if there are any gaps. Great job there.
He also overlaps each spot about 50% which prevents pinholes. I’m definitely going to use Kyle’s technique next time I do any patching/panel replacement.
Thanks Mike, it's been a huge time saver!
Thanks for useful content!
I'm also looking forward to the new channel direction. I suggest naming it "Kyle's Kats and Komplaints".
Hahaha nice, I like it!
I learn something with each video! Thanks Kyle!
Glad to hear that!
well i like how you do welding one spot welding then grind it down . more i think about it stops warping. Awesome work .
Oh warping occurs no matter what due to the weld shrinking. The trick is to keep it to a minimum
@@CarterAutoRestyling i want tell you gave me your phone i do not have cellphone . you are very skilled body man . take pride in your work . for my self i dealing with broken back . also dealing with car accident and it write off . I in near future i send some funds to you to keep channel open so bare with me.
@@martinhillstead1541 Hi Martin, I never gave out a phone number and I never will. There are a bunch of scammers going around giving out fake phone numbers and trying to rip people off. DO NOT try to contact them, just ignore them!
Thanks again for watching!
I really enjoy geeking out with you! Thanks for the great content
Acceptable: understatement of the year.
Thanks Bill!
Nice! 👍🏻
Thanks Morgan!
Thanks for the cab corner lesson , all the 'splainin' was real helpful too! Good cab corner archeology segment. PS you should rescue that plastic straw , in a few years it will be worth more than the '48! 😂
Thanks! I'm starting a plastic straw museum
Don’t ever change! (Your attitude or channel) it is the highlight of my week…
Haha I'll try not to! Thanks for watching!
You’re the man… Talk about quality work… I always learn something from your videos!
Thank you!
The more I watch your channel, the more I like your channel
Glad to hear that, thanks for watching!
There you go! Thanks for the videos
Thanks for watching!
Thanks Carter for the videos !
Thanks for watching!
I have just found your channel and only wish that I had see your method of 3 welds and grind. I completely rebuilt a '56 Chevy stepwise and ex farmer's vehicle in South Africa and cab corners replacement were one of the many sheet repairs. I bought in 2004 and completed it in 2021 then sold it as I relocated to the UK. The rears still well up in my eyes. Fantastic work that you do is a credit to all DIY'ers. Cheers
love looking at old repairs and methods ! My dad was a welder before me and taught me many ‘slice and dice’ and braising tricks! It was just what was done then with limited resources. You do amazing work, and great explanations also! 👍🏼
Thanks Milo, we are fortunate to have so many resources available today for fixing these old junkers, people used to have to get a lot more creative!
Hi Kyle,
Pryotechnicals to start + good tips/expanations/demonstrations in the middle + kitties at the end = another good video.
While I enjoy a (VERY) few shows on TV... none are as enjoyable and informative as your productions.
Good timing to get that side done before cleaning had to happen. Just sweep it all under the truck to the other side and continue.
I'm glad that the videos are starting to make a little bit of monetary sense. It would be a darned shame to put out that effort otherwise.
Have a good one.
Thank you Joe! I appreciate the tip on sweeping everything to the other side, that will be a real time saver! Being a sandwich artist at Subway is still more lucrative than making youtube videos, but I don't like the general public and it would upset the cats if I smelled like sandwiches all the time
Hey... it was a simple tip but I try to give back to those who have given so much. ;)
You need a helper/slave. Whenever I do work for my brother I say that the clean-up is his job and I walk away.
Yes, take care of the cats. They would start eating you after 48 hours if you died. Smelling like a sandwich might make them not wait until you croak.
Good video Kyle I have the same philosophy about patch panels. You were preaching to the choir. Also I feel that cat people rant more than dog people. I think it's because you can't sic your cat on your neighbor.
Thanks Keith! That's an interesting observation, but I believe you are correct
This will be a great reference for a repair that needs doing someday on our '52 that has a puncture in that spot from a fence post from early in it's life. Thankfully, there is no rust. Thank you for the video! Cheers!
Thanks Heather! A fence post puncture sounds pretty spectacular, they must have really taken a run at it! I'm glad that these videos are helping with your projects!
Again a really handy vid, I'm still plucking up courage to do some work on my long-term fixer-upper 👍
You should definitely get started on it!
SO DISAPPOINTED
NO MORE CODDLING !!!
I really do appreciate you taking the time to explain the thought processing that takes place before major surgery.
Sorry Glen! Haha
Prior to youtube there was no thought processing at all, I just did it...but now I'm forced to actually think about everything that I do so that it can be translated for the viewers
It’s supposed to be fun - apparently 😂😂. Thank you Kyle!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this excellent video, if I ever have do something like this to my truck, I learned a lot!
Thanks for watching! Hopefully your truck will never need these types of repairs!
I love the the tutorial and the lesson you do an excellent job explaining what you are working on !
Thanks Paul!
“Bad news…I’m gonna talk some more” I’m absolutely rolling on the floor!
Glad you got a laugh out of that haha
Mate you are cruzing on the Slipstream with your presentations now. The right combination of everything. Take Care Matey. 10/10
Ahh shoot! I was aiming for the wrong combination of everything haha
@@CarterAutoRestyling Carter What do you do if you are driving your car and you see a Spaceman ? You Parkman.
Stated watching a while back.
I'm getting ready to start a 1952 3/4 ton 5 window
Thanks for explaining how and why you are doing what you're doing.🤠👍
Thank you for watching, good luck with the 52! I love those 3/4 tons!
Ya it was my dad's he got it back in the early 1970s.
She's in ruff shape, but me my boys are going to make a go of it.🤠👍
Great job on your rust repairs as usual. Haven’t had television at my place in years. The communications companies priced themselves out of the market and here we are in the present watching ads on UA-cam. How about that?
Thanks Dave! We've come full circle and youtube has become what it was intended to replace.
I do those the same way....Just use a little filler when I am done. I dont try to get it metal finished. Last for many years. Be there way beyond when I am dead. and Looks perfect.
Once again the metal maestro at work! Terrific stuff indeed.
Thanks!
Thanks for the small but important Tips and Tricks !!
Kumbaya baby! Glad you're here to hold our hands lol.... excellent patch!
God bless.
Thanks Paul, I'm always there to hold hands with my viewers haha
What a heart warming story for sure! This ‘48 is coming along great. Can’t wait to meet “Phil” or Fill. I can never understand how these new parents spell their kids names anymore! Good promotion of your other videos. Cool dissection of the old cab corner! Neat to see how older repairs were done. As for ads, your work on these videos is worth money. It is cheaper for me to watch 6 commercials vs paying you to teach me one on one! Isn’t it? Thanks Kyle!
Oh yeah, I'm pretty ornery and senile for my young age so watching the videos is definitely the cheaper and better option haha
@@CarterAutoRestyling You make the videos interesting for sure!
And I was just getting ready to get off my ass and go do some exciting aviation related soldering in the shop,,,,one more video and coffee...
Sorry for the distraction haha! I suspect aviation related soldering is kind of critical!
@@CarterAutoRestyling not really..just put together a spare headset.
Awesome video! I really appreciate the new methods that this old timer had not seen before.
Thanks John!
Another great video!!!
I like the 'body repair archaeological digs and discoveries' portions and the 'unveiling of brass traces chapter.
Thanks.
Thanks, more autobody archeology to come!
Love the content, wish I had learned this stuff years ago.
Thank you!
If I bought a old vehicle I hope it's one you did you do great work Thanks for your videos.
Thank you!
I like your dead pan delivery and explanations. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Alan!
Made the cab corner installation look easy ..... I'll have to go back and refresh the welding method .... looks like a method to a madness ..... another fine video ... "keep on truckin" ....
Thanks, will do!
Thank you for your explanations and do's and don'ts. Great work as always. Rich/USA
Thanks Rich!
Great repair and now it's better than new.
Another great video - thanks for taking the time to teach!
Hi Rick, thank you for watching and thanks very much for supporting the show!
The Master keeps us on the edge of our seat,,, and points out the old bad way work was done years ago,,, The master even thinks of our time... He is the best....
Soooooo satisfying watching the stitch and grind as that seam gets welded...very impressive
Thanks Darryl!
When I first started watching you tube I found the ads annoying. Now I understand that they are necessary for channels to survive, so I generally let them play. Besides they are much shorter than what's on tv. Another good segment, I always thought those aftermarket panels were supposed to be used in their entirtey. The way you use them makes more sense, Thanks.
As always, another great video Kyle. I always enjoy the videos you share. Your videos keep me riveted, as is when I watch Fitzees channel. Thank you for sharing as always. Looking forward to seeing your next video. How about a sample of the upcoming Opera Kyle? Just a thought! LOL Love the channel man. Keep On Keeping On Brother!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I'll do a full video on the opera at 10 million subscribers. Thanks for watching!
You have a very clear explanations. Go go brother...
Thank you!
More stuff I need to do. I have no idea how a you tube log rhythm works. I didn't know watching the adds or allegedly just letting them run helped. I much appreciate you teaching and entertaining me with your videos. Thank you for your time. Joseph wants to eat the purple stick.
Oh please just skip the ads! It only amounts to a few fractions of a cent per viewer and you and the hounds have earned special "ad free" privileges. I'll ask Allan how the purple thing tastes so you can pass the info on to Joseph
Thank you for explaining about rust being on the inside of the panel higher than the outside. I am new to the trade and am restoring a Chevy square body and have run into this problem. Really like your videos keep up the great work brother
Keep yours explanations, as they are extremely clear & very useful. Thank you. Looking great.
I am new here so thanks for the explanations along the way. I'm one of those "geeks" that gets a lot of satisfaction from metal fabrication and repair but I suffer from not being good at it so it can be frustrating.
Your composition of your videos is appreciated. Thanks.
Thank you!
Clean work. Thanks for the videos. Super helpful
Thanks for watching, I'm glad to hear they help!
Thank you, this is a great prep for my first cab corner fix. As soon as it warms up.
Good luck!
So much useful information. I'm so glad someone told me about your channel in comments .
Thanks for watching!
Very good explanation and nice shout out to Fitzee.
Keep it coming, haven't missed on yet
Thanks for continuing to watch!
Had no idea it helped you if I watched the ads. I will sit through them now.
I learn a lot from your channel thanks.
Thanks! Feel free to continue skipping them!
Hey, you gotta put bread on the table. Great info like this isn't free. Keep up the great work!!
Great video. I’m starting on a 55 and need to replace both cab corner caps. This helped a lot on how to cut and fit
Excellent work. I Can't Believe It Got Butt-Welded.
Hahaha, nice!
Thanks for the lessons. Very much appreciated.
shortly I'm starting my first yea for Autobody, thank you for motivating me more to learn as much as I can so I can do my projects lol
That's great to hear you're getting into the trade! Good luck with your projects!
Honestly, the cut out piece you showed us prooves one thing: It held up for quite a while. We used to repair daily beaters just like that as well back in the days. Often you only repaired it in order to pass regular inspections that cars had to pass to stay roadlegal.
If you know that a vehicle has only a few years left before it is crashed that is good enough. Often the use of bondo was the cheaper way to go.
Of course that is not the way you do it, if you want to restore a classic.
I heard of cars that were "restored" in the States with incredible things done: I heard of a guy who imported a 57 T-Bird and was very proud of his car. One thing was strange though: The side windows could not be rolled down enough. When they removed the door panel and took a look inside the doors they found out that the lower parts of the doors were filled with construction cement!
I don't mind the old repairs that were done to keep the vehicle on the road, like you said they did what they had to do to keep an old junker going. If those repairs hadn't been done then the vehicle would have gone to scrap and be lost forever. What I don't like is digging into someone elses bad restoration work or something that was tarted up for an auction, those cars are always a mess haha
Thank you for the 📹 trying to learn how to do Body Work repair on some of my classic cars the videos really help
Awesome, I'm glad to hear they are helpful!
I love the way you approach this work. You are my favorite go to youtuber for common sense body work on my old 50 chevy truck. I'm an old guy but welding and body work were new to me, but now I'm managing to fix up (not restore) my truck. Thanks for all your informative and entertaining videos.
Great video and throughly explained. Keep up the great work.
Love it Kyle , great job as always. Also I’d watch cats and Kyle rants anytime.
Lol. I love the channel. Keep being you. Little jabs and all. Good job on the truck.
Great content, keep the videos👍
Thanks, I'll try to keep them coming!
I like the way this guy takes his time and explains as he goes to make sense why he does things the way he does.
Thank you Mike!
In my over-active imagination there's a 95-year-old retired Canadian GM factory worker who watches this video and recognizes the body assembly work he did on this vehicle seventy years ago. He's thinking that it's just not fair, you calling his work half-assed when the foreman was constantly screaming at them to work faster and keep the line moving.
That would actually be really cool if one of the old workers was watching this haha
Adds are an reasonable way for us to get some funds to you for that you are teaching us. I sometimes used the adds time to do other things. Thank you for your honesty.
Great work, I wish I could do this kind of work along with the mechanical work I do.
When I was 15 I had a Chevy truck like the one you are working on, it wasn't much, however it was all mine.
"....tart this thing up...." LOLOL. Great video, man, thanks for turnin' on the camera.
Thanks haha
Kyle Remember some of us ( me myself and I ) watch for the entertainment of watching you bring a rusty hulk back. I am more excited about the driver side, since it is much worse, so don't skip over too fast. BEST when you work and explain, ( ramble ) lol. I know there are trolls just waiting for you to make a mistake, but most of us are not . Keep Going !!!
Thank you! Even though the drivers side looks worse I'm actually replacing the same amount of metal as the passenger side
@@CarterAutoRestyling On episode 1 you said the driver side was barely holding the truck together . Remember, when you say we covered an item on a earlier show, we didn't cover it on THIS build. I have watched Dean and the crew for years ( same old shit ) lol !!! loved the Fury.
best video yet👍
Wow thanks haha!
We love your content, thanks for the tips! I am fixing a bunch of old repairs on my truck right now tons of brazing and bondo work on top of it. The bondo must be 20 years old or older and it is so thick and comes off like gum. I am blown away at how crude the repairs were, but I am having fun seeing how they did it back in the day.
Haha that doesn't sound like much fun uncovering all that stuff, so I admire your optimistic attitude. Good luck with the repairs!
Best channel on you tube!
Wow thanks for saying so!
totally enjoy and learn something new each video.
