At first I was just (subconsciously) thinking that it's just a fancy microscope, almost for the sake of being fancy. But, once you mentioned that it's invoking nature, it suddenly makes so much sense. There's a reason they designed the microscope that way, and it's beautiful. This is why I love your channel, it helps me appreciate things that I don't often see at first.

I appreciate how this series does a great job of providing the cultural, historical, political, societal etc context of the art objects they present. Especially fascinating context for this microscope - definitely hear resonances with things going on in the world today.

The intersection of my two favorite subjects--scientific history and art analysis! Thank you Smarthistory and Getty for this wonderful presentation!

I love the name Rococo - how fun.
This room is quite a sight! I couldn't imagine living in such an opulent space...
I do wonder where the other 9 microscopes are located, but I'm glad we nabbed one!
And it was nice to get back in high school Chem class, lol. I certainly didn't use microscopes like this one - even the case was a thing of beauty. Dr. Harris' note about organic movement / life in flux was spot on. And I appreciated the nod to the miraculous existing within the mundane. Fascinating. ❤

It was a treat to work with the curators at the Getty and to be able to work in their Rococo room.

Its amazing that this microscope, the case and all the accessories survived together for this long. Too often do things get lost. I wonder why this didn't happen here.

Interesting that is uses 3 lenses at a time, I didn't know that was a thing for compound microscopes. All the modern ones I've used always have one ocular and one object used at any given time. Love the image of the flea through that beautiful old microscope. When letting people look in a microscope for the first time, I always bring a flea slide, people love seeing it. That hasn't changed since 1751.
