The 7 show: EP 3 - Kali Audio IN-5 Studio Monitor Review

  • In this video I long-windedly review the Kali Audio IN-5 studio monitors. In the first section I discuss why I think I'd like these in my space, in the second we take a 20Hz to 20 kHz sweep of the Kali Audio IN-5, Adam A7, and JBL 4406 monitors and compare side by side. In the last section I listen to 8 songs (off camera) on the A7 and IN-5 and try my best to describe how the monitors performed. Finally, I give my verdict on if these are keepers or not. No skipping ahead.

    one of the rare unbiased reviews, as far as unbiased can go. I can't fully trust people who get stuff from manufacturers. Love the extended commentary too. The tracklist was another things that set this vid apart, love that you used Take 5 as your first reference.

    Finally, a review where the reviewer actually purchased the In-5 and didn't receive it for free. I know I'll get an honest impression of the speakers, and not some excessively gushing rant about how they're the greatest thing ever, simply because the reviewer wants to keep receiving free product.

      Thanks. Of course there is always possible reviewer bias because they spent the money and so they WANT to like them and not feel ripped off. I guess since I can still take them back for a refund AND I kept them says something positive about them.
      The question still remains if these will move to my preferred monitors. I won't know that until the room is treated.

      I think the IN-5 or IN-8 v2 would blow the KRKs out of the water. I've not spent much time behind the Rokit 6, but during a test drive of monitors a few years back they were in the line up and didn't have to hear them for very long to move past them. The IN-5s are great and I'm really happy with them, but give the version 2 IN-8s a close look as well.

      Hi Freddy. Thanks. I'm planning on doing a follow up video on the IN5's letting people know if I still like them. Short answer is yes. They're very capable monitors. I've been in the studio working on new music the last couple days and I'm finding myself bouncing between the Kali and the Adam's a lot. I'm using the Kali's when I'm just working on writing music and the Adam's when I am mixing or trying to pinpoint something in the mix. The Kali are a bit more relaxed and the Adams are more precise - if that makes sense. Having said that, if I only used the Kali for a mix, I think the mix would translate well to other systems - which is the whole point of good monitors.
      In fact, I'll put this to the test for my follow up video. I'm going to be mixing my new track in the next week or so. I'll just use the Kali for the first mix, a few days later (let my ears forget what they've heard) I'll do it again with the Adam and see how the two mixes come out. That would be an interesting test.

    I agree with your process in listening out for the characteristics each song can produce and how the speakers can (or not) detail this. Using known songs of choice can really help dial in a setup IF you know what you're listing out for. Well done on this clip. Cheers for the review on these. I have been hearing a lot about these. NOTE: I have as a "general" sound picture, a set of KRK Rocket 10'3 that I DON'T use for my critical listening monitors because they hiss like a snake on steroids, but are great from around 3 metres away as a general universal type sound. But for near field I am leaning toward the Kali in5 because as you had stated about wanting to be sure of the signal chain that there is no noise being added that otherwise you wouldn't hear because of any inherent noise that already exists within the architecture of the speakers amps. ANYWAY... Cheers.

      Thanks. I've been meaning to make a quick follow up video on the Kali IN-5 now that they are in a properly treated room and in a more ideal situation. I think they sound great. I've heard Kali released the IN-8 version 2 which got rid of the noise and hum from the previous version. I would probably lean towards those if I were to buy today. but, the IN-5 is a solid, well priced monitor.

      @@SevensPinballorama Yeah... am doing a bit of Research on them two (In8 2nd wave). I would be a little critical on the "mid-hi" setup... seems on some to be not quite physically centred between the mid driver and the tweeter which could be a friction issue and thus a fatigue problem down the track . Visually you can see it. Otherwise, the reviews are all good

    I find unboxing videos useful when the manufacturer fails to provide a clear list of items in the box of what you're buying. Also most manufacturer pictures are the digital renders that don't show the real product in the real world, an unboxing will show you exactly how the stuff is packaged and bundled, and how it actually looks.

    Thanks for making this video. Like you, I was sizing up the IN-8s because I wanted the bigger woofer, but also heard the issue with self-noise (Kali have told me that they're going to rectify this issue in the IN-8). I was looking at the IN-5s as an alternative, but was also considering the A7Xs or even the T7V. I'm looking for a second pair of monitors to compare mixes against my NS-10s, and something about the three-way design is appealing to me. Hearing your neutral review was reassuring, as I was suspicious of the potential marketing guff surrounding these monitors. To hear that your initial thoughts of these stacking up well against the A7X sounds promising.

      @SevensPinballorama  3 роки тому +1

      You're welcome. The marketing on these monitors left me suspicious so I had to test them myself. If you are looking for a mate to the original NS-10s, I think the Kali IN-5 are probably a good match for the price point.

      if you decide between any Kali Audio vs the TV7 go from Kali Audio, the TV7 is absolutely trash, its by no way a budget A7X, totally different , flimsy and artificial sounding. I used to have them , sold them after a week, i now have the APS Klassik 2020 and neumann kh120. Those Kali in5 sound interesting specially since they remove the self noise issue from other models

      I didn't have a problem with this at all. How are you connecting these? The first thing I'd try is connecting them into another port to see if that helps. Use different cables, etc. Also try resetting all the dip switches just to make sure they're in the correct position. If none of that makes a difference, I'd go back to where you bought them (or contact Kali directly) and see if they can sort it out. I wouldn't know which one would be the faulty one. Maybe the dimmer one?
      I hope you can get it sorted. If you reach out to Kali, keep me updated on what they tell you.

    Of course, judging speakers based on 'live' sound clips is wrong, but I could hear that the MoFi Sourcepoint 10 had a treble bump and later reviews confirmed that, so I can't dismiss it completely.

  • @rsvp9816
    @rsvp9816 3 роки тому +1

    have you tried switches 6 and 7 up on the rear to lift the treble, you might get more details out.

    • @SevensPinballorama
      @SevensPinballorama  3 роки тому +1

      Yes. First I wanted to test them out of the box just to see how they sounded. The next day I played with the dip switches. I did the +2 dB on the high end, but I didn't notice much difference. I didn't take a reading of it yet though.
      I plan on doing another test and shoot the monitors in every dip switch setting to see how it looks. They really don't give much detail on half those settings and what they modify.

    @gotyor 3 роки тому

    I have a pair of lp-6's that I thought were excellent for the money, but after 4 months use I have put them up for sell. Two reason I am selling them, 1 the self noise from the amps drove me nuts. 2nd reason they had a really round bass tone... sort of flabby instead of punchy. There are things I love about them, best stereo image I heard in a long time, and not fatigueing and a sense of depth. If kali has truly got rid of the self noise, and hopefully made the bass tone snappier will keeping all the thing I just said I liked about them.... then these would be the speaker for me. So could you tell us... is the self noise gone, and the low end snappy not round and sloppy?

    • @SevensPinballorama
      @SevensPinballorama  3 роки тому

      I can say the amp noise is not present in the IN-5 - at least no in mine. The bass sounds pretty good but my room still isn't treated and my room itself is a little round and sloppy. I should have treatments up soon and I'll do a follow up on the monitors then.
