Also could pick off passing lanes like De’Aaron Fox and had huge hands like Kawhi. He could literally drop 30 a game today without a 3. He could do even more if he practiced the 3 more nowadays, but I’m not gonna get into hypotheticals. Slashers and sharpshooters are still relevant in today’s game idk whatchu talkin bout 🤣 plus he brings good defense to the table

I went to UB when Nate Oats was still HC and was also there when he left for Alabama after agreeing to come back. At first I was so upset but I’m glad to see him get his recognition bc he was one of the best coaches in college basketball

Another great video Jordan! Love how you pointed out the translation of Oats' philosophy on defense. Saw that Alabama forces opponents into taking 37% of their shots from midrange, which is a top 5 number in the country. Unreal how committed the Tide are to this style.
I was watching a pistons game the other day and Bojan was open for a mid range off an inbounds play and instead of shooting the deep middie immediately he took a dribble back to the three line.

I met Nate when I was covering a high school team (in Michigan). He was recruiting a player to Buffalo at the time. Got to watch a couple games alongside him in the stands. He's a great guy, class act, and I hope for the best for him.
Hope we get some Marquette content soon! Consistently been in the top ~5 of the country in offense despite Shaka being known as a defensive guy, and they’re pretty unique offensively compared to the rest of CBB with the blend of talent they have.

This is an evolution from Vance Wahlberg's dribble drive attack motion offense. Nate Oats even uses the same terminology, huggers, gaps, points per possession efficiency.

Hi hoop vision I love your videos I watch them all and aspire to be a high school coach one day I have wrote down various plays on pieces of paper a lot of them being plays I learned from you it would help a lot if we talked about how to successfully put a playbook together for highschool
Once you decide to play fast, the number of people that you decide to send to the rim will decide whether you get more in the primary or secondary break. With 1 or 2 players to the rim, you will have a better early offense. With 3 or more players to the rim, you will have a better fast break. If you just want max possessions in the game because you have an edge in points per shot then you should favor the secondary break. But if you want to maximize the PPS of those possessions, or you maybe have a rebounding edge, it's better to send more players to the rim.

In their drop coverage on screens they're leaving the pick & pop wide open so a team with a solid stretch big could get a lot of threes off against them. I'm curious how they would adjust to that. Awesome video man keep it up!

Got a question for you. In your opinion would a team like Alabama be better off incorporating 2pt jumpshots late in close games where it’s often argued going for the extra point may be less beneficial because of how many fewer possessions are left in the game.
These late game situations tend to be less free flowing and defenses are a lot more alert. I’m curious to see how Bama fares in close games during March. Could be something they look to fix with their philosophy down the road.
I mean, until the last possession it's still good to get the most possible points per possession. There isn't that much less variance shooting a 2pt jumper (say 40% vs. 36%). So you're not really minimizing risk much. In a 1 point game with 10 seconds left? Sure. Take a mdrange jumper at the higher chance to make it. Although your team shooting and practicing taking 3s so often probably eliminates most of the difference in difficulty.
@@ra2bk All midrange shots aren't alike, nor are all 3 pointers. A wide open 10 foot shot in the hole in a defense that is focused on protecting the rim and guarding the 3 point line should be a 60% shot, which is 1.2 points per possession, which is equivalent to a 40% 3 point percentage, better than just about any college or NBA team is going to shoot on a sustained basis . It's certainly a better points per possession play that a small guard driving it all the way to the basket and trying to finish over a big defender. Alabama's smaller guards like Sears and Quinerly turn the ball over too much because they pass up a 10 foot floater to get their shot blocked at the rim, pick up a charging foul before they get to the rim, or commit a turnover because they get caught in the air and try to make a pass out to the 3 point line. An open 10 footer isn't the same thing as a contested 17 footer. Any theory can be taken too far. I think players should be working on the 10-15 foot shots in the middle of the defense and small guards should learn to shoot the 6 to 8 foot floater in space instead of driving all the way to the basket when there's a defender there.
@@Don-md6wn I agree not all midrange shots are alike and I was generalizing, but floaters are generally NOT good shots. National NCAA average on floaters was 35%. You really might as well take a 3 in that case. If you're wide open, sure, but you're rarely taking a wide open floater... otherwise you wouldn't be floating it at all (by definition a shot designed to arc over defense) and/or you'd just drive all the way to the rim if you had a clear path. Instead of floating, you could pull-up, which is better, but an off the dribble pull up midrange shot is again not a good shot. The act of pulling up off the dribble makes it much tougher. Attacking the rim adds the good chance of getting fouled, which is so efficient that it's worth a couple blocked shots as a tradeoff (you may make the shot if not blocked or recover the block oreb anyways). But again, this is all in theory and every single play is different. The best are able to process in real time what the best option is based on the positioning of the defense, etc.
tbh it makes sense, the closer the basket the easier the make, ie. the easiest shot- shooting a mid range is only making it harder for you, at least with a 3 you get a extra point!

Sometimes the midrange is what the defense gives you and it becomes the easiest option.

To say we don’t shoot midrange anymore is same idiotic bs like saying we don’t shoot free throws anymore. To limit your options on offense is dumb, defenses can adjust easy to it especially in the playoffs.

Underrated comment my friend 💯. Passing up a good look mid range jumper (that isn't a deep mid range jumper) is often the better option than a contested three or passing up that look in order to create a perfect look three point shot, which will be hard to create versus good defensive teams 💯

He learned that the midrange wasn't working, so he adapted to the 3 pointer. That's what great coaches do, they adapt and make changes to their system. You get left behind if you can't make adjustments.

Gonzaga basically beat Alabama because they hit every single floater. Normally that wouldn’t happen.

And Timme was also doing well scoring under the basket which caused Bama to defend inside harder which gave them more room for the midrange. I was in the front row at that game and I swear they couldn't miss.
I'm an Alabama and love the job Oats is doing there, but you can go too far in any philosophy. Alabama struggles with turnovers at times, and a lot of that is because guards who are too small to finish in traffic turn the ball over via charges or passes where the defense knows they can't finish and play the passing lanes. I think this only 3 pointers, shots around the basket and free throws philosophy can be overdone and leave big holes in the midrange that smart teams and players learn how to exploit. Alabama struggled against Tennessee this week because Tennessee played physical, defended at the rim and guarded the 3 point line. Kentucky beat Tennessee yesterday with 2 point shots while only attempting 8 threes. I think small guards need to learn how to shoot floaters or pull up 10 footers instead of driving into the teeth of the defense. Alabama is capable of doing this. They didn't come from behind on the road to beat Houston by jacking up 3's, they got physical and beat Houston at their own game.
5:35 that’s just incredibly poor off ball defense by #4, there’s no reason for him to get that far off his man. The center is there specifically for on-ball help on the PnR and even if he loses his man on a roll, there’s help specifically there on the low post to help defend the rim.
Just goes to show how one person can ruin an entire defensive set.

the removal of handchecking and the constant use of moving screens has made basketball a painfully boring succession of chucks and dunks...they need to scrap the three point line to get real ball back...in my opinion, though it seems somewhat counterintuitive, such a change would make great shooting even more valuable as teams will pack the paint without fear of being hurt by a shot worth a full 50% more.
and now shooters are so good they dont need to get into the packed paint to shoot undefended consistently soooo it would still be "boring"

No teams shoot them anymore and it's made basketball almost unwatchable. The Warriors have ruined basketball. Watching teams chuck up 80-100 3 pointers per game is just trash basketball but that's what everybody is doing now. 2 of the top 5 greatest players in history (Jordan and Kobe) were the greatest midrange shooters in history and they made a living on those shots. They were incredible to watch and there was such a wide variety of shots they took that it was incredible to see.

Teams that don't shoot midrange jumpers are predictable. You look in the NBA and those teams never win championships. Meanwhile, teams with an elite midrange scorer usually win...
It's not about efficiency as much as it is about unpredictability. You can take away the three by positioning defenders on that spot. You can't take away the midrange because it's.... everywhere.
If teams don't know where you're going to pull up from, it's really really hard to guard them.

Like the OU game January 28 (ALA 66 OU93). Turnovers and rebounds were equal. FG% ALA 37.9 OU 57.6. 3PT% ALA 27.3 (6-22) OU 69.2 (9-13) [9 fewer and 3 more].
In the loss to UCONN, there was a period where ALA had 1pt in almost 5 minutes to UCONNs 12 (14 pt lead with 4:06 remaining and lost by 15)
most rebounds end up being long rebounds though when you shoot 3s, alabama is actually number 15 in offensive rebounding this year
@@ThomasMichaud If any teams runs into somebody that shoots 58% from the field and 69% from 3, more than likely they will lose, regardless of the style of play. The key to running this style of offense is defending at a high level to be able to weather an off shooting night. If you don't defend, then yes, you can and likely will lose. 2020-2021 Alabama defended at very high level and won the regular season and conference tournament and entered as a 2 seed in March. 2021-2022 Alabama did not defend at a high level and limped in as a 6 seed and trending down. We all see what this year's team looks like. Alabama will typically score points, so their long term prospects will depend on defense. When it is all clicking, it is the most exciting brand of basketball in the country and I don't think it is all that close.
normally, yes. but alabamas defense is so elite that even when theyre on a cold streak they never really get blown out. (with a couple of exceptions) oats has been running this system for the last 3 years. 2 years ago bama also had an elite defense and this system worked to perfection. last year, their defense was average and they were not nearly as good. this system basically relies on a good defense. when they have it (such as this year) bama is a team that is difficult to beat when their shooting is average, and impossible to beat when they are shooting well

get rid of 3 pointer and everything naturally normalizes. artificially giving +50% reward for long shots is not even logical. watching players heave 25 foot shots when there is an open lane is not entertaining to me.
