"If your piano has six strings, that's a guitar, my friend." I don't know why, but this made me crack up so hard I had to pause the video. (I may be sleep-deprived)
I'm glad they're starting to include a Jon into the show more. I think the Colbert writers weren't quite sure what to do with him coming from the old show, but he's a real asset. He's fun, energetic, and wickedly talented. Glad they're giving him a voice.
+Male Geisha I was at this taping and when the picture came up I literally couldn't breathe I was laughing so hard. I think that's partially the reason why the audience laughs a bit late. It was hilarious!
Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else wants to discover learning how to play piano online try Jadonite Piano Player Buddy (just google it ) ? Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my brother in law got amazing success with it.
@@yasmineabouali6537 On an upright piano, it either pulls down a bar with felt or brings the hammers closer to the keys. Either way, it's kind of like the soft pedal only a lot softer. On a grand piano, it takes the dampers off the string of each key you are currently depressing as you push the pedal down. So it's like the right pedal (sustain pedal) but only for your selection of notes. It can be fun to see the piano from the inside and study what happens when you press a key or pedal. By the way, I'm a pianist and piano teacher and I approve this video ;)
pianofiend I need to learn how to play the piano or violin or something. I grew up as a bit of a gamer so I kind of have a bit of a preference for game music, old and new, original and remixed. I just think it would be nice just to learn how to play something pleasant for people once in a while. Here are a couple of examples. ua-cam.com/video/B_ngOvVoBvg/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/Jth4WDPoNtE/v-deo.html
I had been struggling with the 3rd movement of Moonlight Sonata, but this has opened my eyes. After adjusting the bench, the recommended bpm now seems too slow. Thanks, Jon!
+Joel Therrien Of course better than The Roots, ignoring the fact that they're annoying with the same sound snippets they throw in after every joke they're not nearly as talented as Jon Batiste's Jazz Band here. Listen to some of Stay Human's stuff, just exceptional
Mr. Tulip Lets just say they're both really good. But I don't honestly see how The Roots aren't better. You clearly havent listened to their actual music if you think they're "annoying".
The middle pedal is the Sostenuto. It lets you sustain some of the notes. Basically, some objections get sustained, while others are overruled. Especially when triangle offenses are committed in the basketball court.
I arrived late, but I went through Jon's easy 9-step course, and have become a successful, world famous pianist. I play solo concerts and sell out Carnegie Hall all the time. And it was so easy. Thanks Jon!
I don't usually teach my students anything about the middle pedal. It's rarely used, not to mention it performs two entirely different functions depending on the type of piano. You aren't missing anything
+Brendan Beckett the middle pedal is usually a separate bass note sustain. Any notes held down (up to middle C) when you push the pedal down will stay sustained until you let go, but any notes played while the pedal is already down don't get sustained. It's really not that complicated, I don't know why it's like this joke
+martinaee It sustains a note, but only one note/chord at a time. So, unlike the sustain pedal, which sustains all the notes present and future, the middle one will sustain just that one note/chord, while you play later notes without sustaining them
+Glen F That's true only for grand pianos. Upright pianos are always, from left to right: hammers closer to the string for softer sound, strings muted for practice, strings released for sustain sound. Grand pianos are more complicated and include the one pedal you said.
The third pedal is the clutch. Very necessary for anyone wanting to take there piano playing to the next gear. Warning though, with great power comes great responsibility.
Where can I buy the DVD? This is, by far, the most informative, intuitively expressive instructional video I have ever seen! I have been playing the piano for more than 40 years and I have learned more in the last 5 minutes!
Was laughing the whole time when I watched this on TV. Waited for this video to be uploaded, watched it again, and laughed even more. Such an amazing segment :) Keep it up!
Haha this is so funny. The middle pedal joke got me so hard. When I was a student I remember taking years to be bothered to ask my teacher what that pedal actually did!
Finally, you figured out that this type of skit would be perfect for Jon. The right type of corny, but still really funny. Memories of Paul Shaffer in the early 1990's in the Late Show's Heyday. Now, please do more of this.
According to Wikipedia, the middle pedal on any upright piano is a "practice" pedal, similar to turning the volume all the way down on a digital keyboard . . . (?)
2:35 That middle pedal? It's called the sostenuto pedal, and it only "targets" specific notes. I was watching a master class taught by the Hungarian pianist, Andras Schiff. While giving advice on how to play a work by Janacek, he suggested the student use the middle pedal to sustain one particular note because that's what the middle pedal does - it will sustain a single note or chord, while other notes remain unaffected. I thought, "Okay, so FINALLY someone tells me!"

Sleep-deprivation laughing fits are the best! 😄
That and "if you know what that middle pedal does. . ." and traffic light graphic.
I laughed aloud too!!
same. and I'm sleep-deprived

I totally love Jon's "piano comments"...they give so much flavour to the show
Heather Allingham All he does is parrot whatever Colbert says. It's stupid.
@@sjcohen4444 For the most part I would agree with that, but I really enjoyed him in this segment
This is fantastic.
Agreed. Short Piano lessons surely are a market gap :D
It ain’t familiar
This is not original
IT AINT FAMILIAH, ITS TOOOOO FANTASTIC
Yes, yes it is!!!
this was the funniest prerecorded segment in my opinion
One of their best so far
"Dis one, flat." I dieded...
The best - but prehaps for musicans?
"Press F# to pay respects"
@@bazzfromthebackground3696 cross-over music / video game joke... you elitist you :-D
I love this video, it reaffirms the time tested belief, in order to play piano, all you need is a firm understanding of basketball fundamentals
That 'Elton John' over Billy Joel picture got me
+Male Geisha looks like Bill Bailey

Male Geisha same here man
Male Geisha lmao
As a pianist, I can confirm this is how to play.
The part where you leave your Piano clean Icould so relate to that. with my Synthesizer
what is that third pedal for? I have it and it puzzles me everyday.

@Daniel Mendoza : As a guitarist, I can confirm that is not a guitar.
Thanks Jon, I got a full ride to Julliard after watching this.
@Pretzel Boggins funny enough, Jon Batiste actually got both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Julliard.
After watching this I could play Liszt's La Campanella and I didn't need to Ling Ling 40 hours.
Jon's smiling face is the best part (of a lot of things). It's infectious.
I had been struggling with the 3rd movement of Moonlight Sonata, but this has opened my eyes. After adjusting the bench, the recommended bpm now seems too slow. Thanks, Jon!
As a UA-cam Piano Teacher I find this really helpful XD
fuck off
Super subtle self promotion dude :)
Smooth. Damn smooth promotion
84chevypickup hahahahahah Jesus, thank you man i laughed so hard
84chevypickup but he's actually a good piano youtuber
One day I hope to be as smooth as Jon Batiste.
I have to admit that I wasn't expecting much from this clip but I was pleasantly surprised

I love that he does bits with Batiste.
Not everyone gives credit to everyone behind the show.
Now he’s gotten an Oscar and is up for a ton of Emmys! “Freedom” is amazing. Sweet personality with gobs of talent!!!!
As a piano player (and not a proper one by ANY means), that whole pedal bit was my favorite! :-D
Elton John looks a lot like Billy Joel

Me and my friend know what the middle pedal is for, so you hit it right after pressing a key to only hold that note, it's a one note hold.
Jon Batiste's best work on the Late Show
besides his music, of course. :)
One of the best bits on the show so far. Hilarious.
