this is so wholesome. i love that you’re so supportive and genuinely intrigued/impressed by this hobby, and he also knows his stuff too! this game actually has a sizeable community even after 16 years of the game existing with many sequels in the franchise, and community members have setup custom servers to host online matches even after nintendo shut their servers down for these old games in 2014. I’m assuming he might already know about this, so if he does, i’d love to watch some gameplay of online races against others if he is willing, and if he doesn’t, definitely let him know!! :D
I actually asked my son today when did the game come out. He said 2008. We have many different versions of Mario Kart and many are much newer than this one, but he likes the 2008 version the best

I get it, in Elementary/Middle School, Nintendo is seen as a kids console by many kids your age... and unfortunately I was too afraid to tell others I liked it. As I got older, I realized that caring about others' opinions does nothing good for you. Believe me, it's so much better to be yourself and express what you love. You will find the best people in doing so. Ignore what others have to say, because in the end if you're happy that's all that matters 😁.

On wario's gold mine he's doing pretty much everything right, but his mushroom boost is running out too early. Let him know to try backing up less in order to make sure he has enough mushroom boost by the time he bounces from the pipe!

I remember being 8/9 in 2012, being inspired by all these new exploits you could do in this game on UA-cam and getting my mum to film the tv so I could post 'top 10 shortcut' videos. Some days I would just attempt the same wall clip for hours and hours until I got it. This video reminded me of my treasured childhood.

I used to play a lot of Mario Kart Wii when I was in middle school, probably one of the games I've played the most in my life. My family always saw like a nerd only thinking about gaming without having any social interactions (which wasn't entirely wrong but still irritates me). Their only reactions were being unhappy of how often I play (no matter how excellent my grades were in school) and when I was raging. It might be cheesy to say, but I feel like this video was made for me. it brings back a good sort of 2010s vibe, and I sincerely appreciate you encouraging your kid to learn how to play Mario Kart Wii. Like him, I also grew up with the game and loved to go for ultra-shortcuts and other techniques. Your son is crazy good at them, they are a lot harder than they look. If he doesn't know already, you should tell him about services like Wiimfi and Retro Rewind that would allow him to show off his skills in some online races. There is still a community today (including me), that regularly play online for fun as this game is best enjoyed with others. Nonetheless, it always brings a smile to my face to see other people appreciate Mario Kart Wii in the same way I do, maybe one day I will meet him on the racetrack.

Ultra Shortcuts were pretty much the reason I got into this game, and what lead me to becoming good at time trials. It's nice seeing a parent be interested in what their kid is doing, even if it confusing at times xD. I hope he continues playing mkw and learning the other ultra scs in the game! i try to play older games, not a lot of the newer games interest me, so i find myself going to the Wii, 3DS or just some older Steam games on my laptop from before 2015 or so
I do these ultra shortcuts all the time. I am trying to do the sherbet land,koopa cape,and rainbow road ultra shortcut. There are 7 of the 15 current ultra shortcuts I can do. Maple treeway,ghost valley 2,grumble volcano,mushroom gorge,coconut mall,Mario circuit,and Warios gold mine.

You should be watching out that your son doesn't fall down the HRT path. These kind of interests and the communities that form around them are gateways to that stuff that you're not prepared for. Be alert. Still support him of course, don't take anything away from him out of fear, but be alert.

your son is super cool and good at this game! the Warios Gold Mine is a hit or miss i can never get it right to do the jump and land back on the track i always do the respawn shortcut there, have your son Miodded the his wii to play Retro Rewind and be able to play online yet? amazing!
do you guys have a modded/hacked wii? it can play mods of mario kart wii and many others, such as MKwii CTGP (custom track grand prix) and retro rewind! these mods also let you play online again

Doing the Grumble Volcano ultra shortcut is the quickest way to lose friends. Speaking from experience, they will not play Mario Kart with you again 😂

your son is super cool and good at this game! the Warios Gold Mine is a hit or miss i can never get it right to do the jump and land back on the track i always do the respawn shortcut there, have your son Miodded the his wii to play Retro Rewind and be able to play online yet? amazing!

do you guys have a modded/hacked wii? it can play mods of mario kart wii and many others, such as MKwii CTGP (custom track grand prix) and retro rewind! these mods also let you play online again
