- Today, we’re going to visit Siberia and take a closer look at how temperatures there (and around the globe) impact the way cultures, communities, and landscapes form. Air temperature plays a much bigger role than just helping us decide what we’re going to wear everyday, it dictates the kind of foods we can grow, how we build our cities and roads, and the kinds of industries that can even exist in a location. And in a region like Siberia, where it can get cold, like REALLY COLD, the air temperature has had an incredible impact on life. But before we end this episode we’ll warm up with a visit to Phoenix, Arizona to talk about how they too have to make a lot of decisions due to the extreme heat of a city in the middle of the desert.

Kvass is really exquisite, like a mix between beer and soda. Altough we cannot see the air around us, it's implications are truly fascinating, from our tiny cpu coolers to global moovements causing seasons, storms and hurricanes

The crazy differences in temperature also happen in North America. Here in Winnipeg, it was -40C this morning, but in 5 months time it'll almost certainly be in the high 30s Celsius. When you grow up here you get used to teeth shattering cold in the winter, eyeball melting heat and humidity in the summer, and always the threat of a flood in the spring, because, floodplain. No need to go to Siberia!
For kvass (квас), you have to picture cold, sweet, carbonated liquid black bread, sounds weird but it's just so good
Kvas is delicious. Exists in Poland, too

I've had Kvass, but in St Petersburg, not Siberia. It's like beer, but less alcoholic and a has a bit more malt/bread flavour. I vaguely remember some sour and fermentation flavours, but it has been a long while.
At around 3:35, where there's the temperature chart, it's interesting that Montreal was chosen, since it is a very cold city, even amongst places of similar latitude.
As someone who lives in Montreal, the one thing people don't often realize is that while we have extremely cold weather in the winter, we also have big heat waves in the summer. The chart at 3:34 shows that well!

That Montreal Canada curve is not extreme enough, some years we can get -32 c in winter and 30c in summer, with out wind and humidity more like -28 to 28.

Using Fahrenheit without saying so... Maybe okish for Siberia is but when you talk US, the rest of world raises an eyebrow
The Russians actually consider Siberia to be the central part of Russia. East of Siberia to the Bering Strait they call the Russian far east.
