No one is mentioning that private school parents also pay tax to provide school places so pay twice
No they don't. State schools are not funded through tax and they are funded according to the number of kids they have.
@@Chinhoyi62 Part of the tax which everyone, including those who educate their children privately, pay, goes towards the education budget.
@@michaelwilkinson2928 No, it doesn't. State schools are funded by government borrowing.
@@michaelwilkinson2928 No, it doesn't. All government spending comes from borrowing. It's spend, then tax, not tax and spend.
Small educational organisations and self-employed teachers offering private tuition will also be targeted and as always with Labour, the wealthy will not be affected while many lower down the scale will lose out the most.
Diddums 😂
I worked scrubbing pub floors in my 20s, saving up every extra penny I could to eventually further my education and advance my situation. I now have a child in private school, which is a financial priority for our family. I'm not wealthy, I drive a used Peugeot, not a German. By not living in pricey London, where I actually work, I can afford my house. I already pay school taxes on my income, and like most private school parents, I can JUST afford to have my kid there.
We know most of our leaders attended private institutions, right? And we complain about how distant they are from the people.
So restricting working parents' ability to provide those opportunities is absurd and shortsighted. It widens the gap!
What a ridiculous proposed “solution.” If only the rich can afford private schools our future leaders are even more likely to be distant because they won't have working parents at home giving them the example.
Now families must relocate to catchment areas and pay inflated housing costs just to access a decent Ofsted scoring public schools? Essentially penalizing those who work hard and budget responsibly by squeezing them for even more money?
Genius plan!
HA!!!
You are rich, you can afford it + the vat.
Oh poor you, how awful 😂😂
Where all these kids Goooo? School overloaded, teachers are on strike…
Yes, perhaps if people hadn't voted Tory since 2010 our state schools would be in much better shape. You reap what you sew.
If taxes stopped billionaires from doing what they want, they wouldn't allow them.
@S but they are disproportionately wealthy and foreign born. That too real for you?
I am a nurse and went without holidays, did not replace my second hand tatty old car for 12 years and went without buying new clothes or spending anything on myself to afford to put my child through private education. Labour are pricing people like my child out private education. This policy will not only ensure that only the wealthy can afford private education it will also put additional financial pressure on state schools because their numbers will increase when those like me will no longer be able to afford the school fees.
If you cannot afford the school fees then tough. Capitalism doesn't care about you....
Oh, how awful for you. My heart goes out 😂😂
Every child taken out of state school is also a LOT of state money saved- for which they have already paid TAX. Private school children should be given goverment grants
No it isn't.
Labour a party of envy
All children are equal but some are more equal than others - Eric Blair 1945 ..........
@@peterkirk123 All children are created equal except once I've had my Independent education (Fettes College) and then my free uni eductaion (St John's College, Oxford) I'll pull up the drawbridge and f**k the upcoming generations - Tony Blair - 1997 - 2010.
Tories are the party of the thick and boring
Oh boo hoo 😂😂
Don't be fcuking stupid.
True. What is the positive vision for state schools? Let state schools charge modest means tested fees. That would make a real difference.
I.7 billion lost in tax because private schools get charity exemption. They get this exemption by doing outreach programs in the community. One school (that charges 14k a term) opens its doors to the peasants once a term for a breakfast club, that's it! that's all they have to do?
I wonder how far 1.7 billion would go to educating the 94% of pupils that aren't privileged enough to go private school?
I send my children to private school they get 50% bursary because of their grades. We sacrifice holidays and a new car so that i can find the fees. It’s 12k a year instead of £24k. They only have this year and they’re done. I could have save the 1k a month or brought a car or put that money towards holidays. I’m an independent social work and single parent. I earn around 80k a year by working and il proud to have been able to put my kiddies in the best possible position educationally. It’s not always easy with a mortgage and bills but i managed it. Adding an additional 20% would have made it harder and it means that my kids spaces could be given to someone else or left vacant so more resources in state school win win in my view!
@@countylivinginstyle2830 😂😂😂
How many Labour MPs sent their children to Private Schools.
@@garagenigel why is this funny? Just because you may have different values then me?
@S I've got no problem with free choice just tax dodgers
Sending my kids to private school so they don't have to learn theres 100 genders and all that nonsense, the government now sees as necessary to teach. I didn't realise I'm gonna have to pay for the whole country's kids to go to school as well as my own. 🙃
you already do though your current taxes. Now they are asking you to pay twice
@@Jimbo2189No, taxes do not pay for state schools. They're paid for through government borrowing.
@@Chinhoyi62 False, that is just what isnt covered by taxes (i.e. the budget defecit). We only have to raise debt because the goverment spends too much money on an absolutely vast public sector.
@@Jimbo2189 Yes, all government spending is borrowing. That's how it works. If you want world class public services you have to pay for them. Unfortunately, the Tories seemed to think they weren't worth paying for, which is why the country is in such a mess.
@@Chinhoyi62 I think you may be be under the delusion that government borrowing is free. What the government overspends (i.e. when spend is higher than tax receipts AKA the budget deficit ) can be paid for via issuing debt - but this cannot be done indefinitely as one needs to service and refinance. Go too high and there is trouble - think of Greece post Global Financial Crisis.
You can’t borrow your way out of debt - something Gordon Brown attempted. You forget the Tory’s inherited a financial disaster with a post it note Chancellor’s desk saying ‘I’m afraid there is no money left’.
The Tory’s had to cut spending to balance the books and being down the budget deficit they inherited. Our state was too large and there were too many dependents. Cutting here was call austerity.
Labour have to do the same as the Tory’s weren’t ruthless enough. The difference is that labour will tax the hard working middle class up to the eyeballs while the 9m on benefits sit at home with no change
reeves still smiling
Another badly thought-out Labour policy. Private schooling is a UK success story, attracting thousands of overseas pupils. Now the sector will shrivel and shrink. Thick as planks.
I bet this GBNews presenter didn't go to private school or, indeed, any school after the age of 16. I wonder what her USP was for her job with GBNews?
As a single parent I sent my child to private school. I gave up everything except my job
I could keep my job as my child was looked after pre, after and holiday times
I had not as much time with her and small classes helped her where I could not find because of my job
I made sacrifices to send her there and I will do it for my grandchild
You are a hero, well done you 😂😂
I hoped it proved to be worthwhile, unlike universal University education for thickos foisted on the nation by the corrupt, mass-murdering clown Tony BLiar as a means of addressing youth unenployment.
Will not send anyone to private school not worth it
We don't pay VAT on essentials (food, children's clothes). Is education not regarded as being essential? If VAT is to be charged on primary and secondary school fees, then logically VAT should be charged on University fees.
We don't need private schools, but we do need universities. Anyway, state schools pay VAT.
@@Chinhoyi62 So only that which is needed is to be allowed? Sounds like North Korea.
@@michaelwilkinson2928 North Korea. Ridiculous. Finland has outlawed private schools, it has the best education system in the world and it's nothing like North Korea.
True, but how often is logic applied to anything?
Of course they are wrong, as with so many of their policies. This is out of spite, ignorance and envy. Many of their MPs have, and their children have been educated privately, now they are stopping parents and children having the same advantage by making this so expensive. It's nothing to do with this being an anomaly, it's a tax on choice, on a preferred education.
Why shouldn't they pay VAT, state schools have to.
@@Chinhoyi62 Partly because those parents also pay taxes, income and council for state schools. They choose to opt for private education because they feel its best for their children and are already making sacrifices to fund the fees.
@@andrewrose7800 So, they're taxes don't pay for state schools. State schools are funded by government borrowing.
The same sort of behaviour that sees Sunak, Kwarteng, Braverman, Zahawi, Cleverly, Patel, Javid, and other of their (and in their cases - trash) economic migrant ilk proving classic exponents of the art of pulling up the ladder after them?
But... An education expert isn't an expert in tax or economy lol why would such a guests opinion matter? It's based on nothing
If people are too poor to pay the vat, they shouldn't send their kids to private school. They may need to cut back on waitrose shops, avocados, and private number plates.
Goodbye GB News, I am unsubscribed. Enjoy bending the knee to OFCOM.
So what do you expect GB news to do, just pay the fees?
Imagine Labour trying to sell this policy to the Home Counties, they haven't thought at all about it, only a vote for the Liberal Democrats can defeat the Conservatives in most of the Blue Wall Southern England Seats.
And so?
Gesture Politics - obviously.
@@lumpyfishgravy Yes, it doesn't go far enough. We need to shut them down completely.

I disagree with Labour on almost everything, but not on this.
It's a massive VAT grift by the most elite schools.
@S They are clearly 'for profit education providers'. Not charities at all.
@S Are you for real? You're trying to suggest a business that charges £40k per student per year and makes a profit is a charity?
I run a business that turns over £4 million pounds a year and have no issue with people making money.
However, I have to pay taxes on my profits buddy, why should people who have already bucked the system be able to squirm out of it by hiding behind 'charitable' status.
They are simply not charities. It's a tax grift.
@@andreashessler838 They don't charge 40k per student per year, average figure is more 15k per year. Moreover, they do act as charities through giving poorer students bursaries to attend the school in addition to providing services, e.g. swimming lessons for underpriveleged kids.

Aaron Bastani is so hot lmao. He's the only Novara Media person I can stand
Who cares? The point is that Public (/Private) Schools are businesses, not charities, and VAT should be levied on the fees. Having a two tier system automatically militates against State educated students so it is iniquitous to have VATless fees. The comment from joniebono below is specious as VAT registration starts at £ 90k. Do any self-employed teachers really earn more than M.Ps.?
Better start taxing universities and nurseries too then as they are also businesses. The UK wants to be the only country in Europe that taxes education and vocational training - not very clever and incredibly short sighted. The international community are all laughing at our country as we will fall further behind.
