When you drove to Florida, you could have gotten off of 95 and gone down the DelMarVa Peninsula...that would have taken you across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel...and that would have taken you right past the biggest naval base in the world at Norfolk. One time when I was driving down to Florida, I stopped at a spot on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and got to watch a Nimitz class supercarrier come into port...it was a spectacular sight.

I've never been on that bridge/tunnel but my mother who grew up in Virginia before meeting my dad in Texas tells me she has fond memories of it as a child.

@@USMC-Goforth And the added benefit is that taking the DelMarVa means you avoid all the traffic snarls of the DC/Baltimore/Norfolk area...and that traffic is really bad any time of day.

Not only are there two major naval bases based in San Diego, but also two Marine Corpse bases as well (MCAS Miramar of Top Gun fame and Camp Pendleton). Also the most recent Top Gun movie had many scenes which were filmed at NAS North Island which is part of Naval Base Coronado.

My Dad was a DoD employee at NAS JAX for 30+ yrs. 50's to 80s. Not far from NARF (naval air rework facility)
Mayport at the beaches, in the 70's we'd go on base just to go on the beach and to the pool.
Years ago,in the 80s, friends hubby was on the old ships, Foresstal and Saratoga. Went on the flight deck of both in port at Mayport.
Norfolk...been there. Its HUGE. Went on the Kennedy in the 90's....then later when she was in drydock in Philadelphia. Went on the flight deck on the Kennedy.
Pretty high up. Kinda freaky seeing the netting on the stern side... skid marks and dents from wheels..etc...
Kings Bay Georgia is the Naval submarine base there, 30 minutes north of Jacksonville off I--95 N.

Which is fair, not many countries have separate military bases in the same place that touch each other, by the same branch, yet are two different bases, haha. Well. If you count partially separated balboa, the naval hospital, then two and small one, and as much as it pains me to say, technically MCRD San Diego too, the Miramar and Pendleton, and the nuclear plant not on Pendleton. Just across the hit away and across the highway. As the whole San Onofre or how ever the hell you spell it, is not connected and seperate from the others. Even though just across the highway and Marines practice amphibious landings on the beach past the nuke plant.

Geographically the San Diego and Coronado bases are divided by a bridge (the Coronado base is on Coronado Island). But the Coronado Island base also houses the Pacific-side for Marine boot camp (Atlantic: Parris Island, SC). I know the San Diego port has massive drydocks for maintanence and repair - amazing to see an Arliegh Burke DDG out of the water - and scary too: one less patrolling. And when you get back to San Diego, please visit the USS Midway Museum - you get to tour a WWII carrier with examples of the planes they hauled to fight the Japanese, through to the aircraft launched during the Vietnam War. Really amazing. And you can walk pretty much the entire flight deck (upgraded from its original WWII platform, with an angled deck if I recall).

I work south of Fort Worth and constantly get all sorts of aircraft flying low over the track during the week. 3 or so weeks ago an AC130 dipped very low over the track which was pretty sweet.
Also, they used to hold races, a car show, and aircraft show at Coronado that I went to back in probably 2013. We were leaving and I saw what I'm pretty sure was the Antonov AN-124. No idea what it was doing there or if that is even what it was, but this plane was huge with multiple sets of rear landing gear. But, easily one of the coolest events I've ever been to.

I tried my hardest to rate as an AWR (Naval Aircrewman Tactical-Helo) so I could fly around in the 60R all day. Unfortunately while going through NACCS (Naval Aircrewman Candidate School) I got injured and had to drop and re-rate. It still bothers me to this day lol.

I mean you're cracking up about the guy on the submarine whacking it with (what looks to be) a giant tire iron cross wrench, but you seem to also be forgetting that there's like 6 other sailors standing around him watching him wail on that. I'm more curious as to what that conversation was like.
"Dad! I can't get this panel open!"
"Dammit Timmy! Okay everyone, gather 'round. I'm only gonna show you this one more time. You've GOT to PUT your BACK inTO it LIKE THIS!!!!"
Also while the San Diego base doesn't seem like the biggest at 2000 acres of coverage, I think a lot of foreigners forget that that naval base is basically on the coast of San Diego.... so it's like prime real estate. And it's in California. They're paying a small nation's worth to keep those 2000 acres for that base and they'll have to pay another small nation for another dozen acres should they ever need it. That's the cost of California.

From what I've been able to find, the US maintains about 27 million acres (110,000 sq Km) dedicated to military bases world wide. Most of that is in the US proper, and some are large "test ranges" but still DoD property.
For size context: This is like taking the entire country of Iceland or Bulgaria (or the state of Virginia) and making it one giant military installation.

Aww buddy, I wish you'd taken two extra weeks and come all the way up to Seattle and the Olympic peninsula. In my 40 some odd years, I've traveled, lived and worked in fifty plus countries on four continents, some of it with the US Army (Airborne!) but most of it with Doctors Without Borders and this little corner of the world is one of my favorite places on the planet - and it only gets better the further north you go and the best part of it at the very NW tip of Washington state (some would say its its not in the contiguous United States, but those people don't count.) It is incredibly lush and green here in TEMPERATE, COOL rain forests Towering trees, verdant green, wet vegetation in the valleys, snow capped peaks and glaciers and mountain lakes from which you can see the sea/oceans
I know our Ranger School was originally modeled after your Commando Course, but they don't know how many similarities they bear today - I imagine the things change, the more thing stay the same, as in other than the misery and what you learn about yourself, probably not much in the way of resemblance. Which is a roundabout way of saying IDK how much time you've spent in a jungle/swamp environment (Ranger school is swamp more than jungle), I've been in jungles, that came later, but imagine a jungle where you're NOT sweating. And being feasted upon by mosquitos the size of hummingbirds. That it's remarkably pleasant to just walk around. Also, someone isn't going to shoot you in the face or grade you unsat for placing your belt feds wrong. (Between the two, I'd rather be shot in the face.)
Plus the this is one of the few places where the native culture is still alive and treated with a modicum of respect.
Also, a couple weeks ago, I went to go pick up a vintage converting library ladder chair from this old lady's waterfront apartment building and she goes, "Oh, look at that." Turned around and there's a pod of killer whales just screwing around in the water. This is in the city, main drag of the seaside drive of a residential/commercial part of town.
People need to learn how to dress (they go to the opera wearing North Face) but I get the sense you woulda fiit right itn.

That is always the problem with this video. Kitsap is where the Bremerton Shipyard is located. That is west across Puget Sound from Seattle. Sub Base Bangor is just north of Bremerton on Hood Canal.
The guy banging away with the "T" wrench is trying to get a folding cleat to rotate. Being made of steel and under water for 2 to 3 months folded up they sometime rust into place. Happens all the time.
I went to Navy Boot Camp and A school in San Diego in the summer and fall of 1964. I was then stationed in New London/Groton, Connecticut and then Pearl Harbor Submarine Base and finally San Diego again at Ballast Point.
