BNSF's Peak Season 2023: Needles & Seligman Sub Pt. 1

Monday, Nov. 20th, was the official start of "Peak Season". From then till Christmas Eve, supply chain companies will see their highest volume of packages of the year. To tackle this logistical challenge, BNSF and UPS team up to provide high priority service for the holiday packages. Chief Dispatchers, Division Superintendents, and Terminal Trainmasters are carefully monitoring the progress of their precious UPS Z-trains as they traverse the BNSF's system to and from UPS Hubs; willing to delay all other trains to prevent the Z-trains from being late. Trains from Los Angeles to Chicago will be running multiple sections to keep up with the increase demand for the holiday rush.
Just in time for Peak Season was the completion of of the new third mainline from Needles, CA to the top of Goffs Hill at Goffs. The new triple main has helped create better routing for trains on the busy Needles Subdivision as they battle a 1.5% grade. Z-trains with five or six locomotives on the point have no issue climbing the grade with speeds of nearly 50 MPH. To the east of Needles, on the Seligman Subdivision, those same UPS Z-trains move at track speed of 70 MPH to stay on time on their tight coast to coast schedule.
