UP's Moffat Tunnel: Summer on the East Slope

  • Enjoy the sights and sounds of heavy freight trains battle a 2% grade over Colorado's famous Rocky Mountains. From Denver, CO to the east portal of the famous Moffat Tunnel, the eastern slope of the subdivision has a mountain grade that ranges from 0.63% to 3% for westbound trains to climb. Both BNSF and the Union Pacific have seen a traffic increase on this line due to the oil fields on Wellington, UT. Now, majority of the traffic for both railroads is crude oil trains. Coal and manifest trains can still be found on this line, but not as much as decades prior. Amtrak's California Zephyr and the Rocky Mountaineer also travers this line.
