I bought my first rotary, an RX3 new back in the early 70s. The side seals failed at about 60,000 MI. I told myself I was done with rotaries. Then I had a buddy who bought an FD RX7. That reignited my love of the Rotary. Came across my RX-8 in 2017, it was cheap and I figured if it blows up, oh well. My daily driver, had the engine rebuilt about a year ago at 131,000 miles and I'm still Loving It.

I remember seeing one in 2003 and thought wow that is so unique! From there I just wanted one and finally in 2019 I got my RX8, been in love with it ever since.

Great video! Love the backstory. I just bought my first RX8 a few weeks ago. 2007 Grand Touring. I actually “rolled the dice” and bought an infamous “cranking not starting” car with the hopes it was just flooded.
Trailered the car home and first thing I did was was wash it. I hate working on dirty cars! Next thing I did was fully charge the battery. Then, when I felt brave enough, I began the deflood process. Every sequence of the process I could hear the engine getting closer and closer to firing. On the 4th sequence it fired on the 4th cranking attempt. It’s ran amazing since. I did have to chase down a lack of power steering. I tried cleaning the connectors but ended up the module under the ECU. Replaced a leaking radiator thanks to your video as well. Also changed the spark plugs which was easier than some said! She needed some TLC, but I SCORED on this car.
Tracked down the previous owner from the receipts and ends up he had rebuilt the engine with Atkins/Mazda parts 20k ago.

The start of my story is the same as yours. NFSU2 and wanting a 350z or an rx8. I bought my first one by complete accident. I was going for a random drive in my 330 and saw one for sale outside a pub for £900. I was about 50 miles from home at the time but went in to enquire about it, took it for a test drive, bought it there and then and drove it home. I collected the 330 a few days later. Sadly that one only lasted me 3 months as it ate one of the apex seals (110,000 miles on the original engine) but my love for them persisted. I'm on my 3rd one now and this one is a keeper. 48,000 miles and runs like a dream!

I’ve always wanted a rotary since I found out about the unique engine back when I was in grade school. Now being young I didn’t have the budget for a rx7 but the rx8 always appealed to me due to the low price but the horrible feed back it sometimes gets from ill informed owners not knowing how to take care of the car would scare me. Seeing your videos helped inspire and give confidence for me to get one due to how informative you were with the preventative maintenance and how to do modifications. Without YOU I would have never bought what is now my prized possession, my 05 rx8.

I remember how I discovered the car. Once my dad casually mentionned these Mazdas with a rotary engine, the RX7 and RX8. YEARS after that it popped into my mind and I googled RX8. Quirky car, quirky engine, community looked supportive, the rest is history.
My first one was a blue 2004, imported USDM model, so it had a sunroof and cruise control! I took the train to see it, it was beautiful. The owners were moving out of the country so they wanted to get rid of it fast. First thing when I drove it was to find the gas cap unlocking thingy on the door sill. Took me a good five minutes lol. That car did not last long as it got totaled in an accident, from which I walked away mostly uninjured, The car rolled over so both doors were bent. Thanks to the sunroof I could get out of it.
My second one is a rescue bought non running from a dodgy shelter (sorry, an cheap used car lot) it has been in an accident (undisclosed) before so it's bi-tone grey and slightly darker grey with free overspray in the engine bay I did not notice because it sat for a year or more on the lot and the guy wanted it gone. I managed to get it running with four new coils and a fuel pump relay. The four no-name coils were bad (open), who could believe it? The relay was stabbed by something pointy, I'll never know what really happened to this poor car before I got it. It also threw a P0610 after a while, which resulted in a new PCM I had to reprogram myself. It is my daily now. I love this beater RX-8.

A guy with an RX-8 used to come eat at a cafe I worked at in 2017. I wasnt into cars or racing games at the time but I always thought his car looked awesome and I would ask him about it while preparing his food. Fast forward to early 2023 and I had developed a passion for cars, but specifically the RX series and its rotary engines. I found one (a red 2004) in my price range a few hundred miles from my home, and on my way to get it the dealer calls me to tell me that the car wont start and the engine is bad. I start to head back home completely heartbroken when he calls me back saying the car is fine, it just didnt have gas. Later I found out that some of the early RX-8s had a defective fuel sensor and would sometimes read as 1/4 tank full when it's really empty lol...anyway about two months later (and after falling in love with the car) someone took a left turn right in front of me in the middle of an intersection and totaled it. Only 60k miles on it. Hoping to get back in the seat of an RX-8 someday...

My story started when I was looking for some better car. Influenced by tuning culture I was looking for Integra, Impreza or Civic Type R. I thought that RX-8 will be too expensive, but it wasn't that much. So I saved for couple of months more a bought Lightning Yellow RX-8. Of course the Initial D made its marks on me, so was usually driving at my local mountain pass, that was the track of European Hill Climb Championship (Pezinska Baba in Slovakia). So I was thinking that I am a good driver, so I signed for amateur slalom race. RX-8 was the most powerful car at its class, but I sucked at driving and finished last :D At that time Slovakia Ring was finishing construction, so I couldn't be missing the first trackday there. And it went horrible, I cooked my brake fluid and broke the clutch pedal. After fixing those issues I attended a lot of slalom, amateur hill climb races and time attack with RX-8. This car started my motorsport carrier and over time I always bought better things for it, when anything broke or was at the end of life. Once I crashed at amateur hill climb and cooked the engine, because I went up the hill without coolant with damaged car, so I bought new engine a fixed my RX-8 in my garage. I learned very much about the car, engine and all the components. My RX-8 had a nice motorsport history, I raced it about 10 years in various events, won couple of trophies and learned very much about cars and racing. Currently it is my weekend car, sometimes I drove it in mountains or at Slovakia Ring just for fun. Nowadays I am racing in MX-5 Cup/HistoCup with MX-5 NA Cup car. After a lot of years of owning my RX-8 I discovered that it was the first one in Slovakia, it was featured in couple of magazines as a new car :D

I got one a mere week ago because I wanted something to fiddle with and fix up to become a summer only, driver.
Thing is, I don't know too much about modifying a car and right now I feel step 1 is learning the maintenance of it before attempting anything else. Premix of course and 98 oktan and I'll have to tackle the whole engine oil change and what else one should have as a maintenance schedule.
Don't have a good place to work on it and busy during the weeks due to work so this is gonna be a mountain to climb. I'm not afraid of the challenge, I just wish I knew anyone remotely interested in cars so we could work together. Alas I'm on my own.
This could become a life long project.

I just got out of the Honda dealer with my CRZ for the 5th time trying to diagnose a brake shudder issue. I looked online, found the perfect low mileage (35k) RX8 nearby at a little village and headed that way. I took it for a little spin, before leaving the street we felt the deal had to be made. Left 45 minutes later with the 8.
The RX7 was a little longer story.

In bought mine 17 years ago. First impression for me was a short article in the german computer magazine c't, where they gave one away in red. When I switched jobs and didn't had a company car anymore and had no need for a daily driver, the idea of a fun car was born. First I still thought about a reasonable car like a Volvo S40, but my mother said to me this is boring and for old people. From there on I knew I should go a little bit more crazy. Nissan 350Z was a possible option, BMW 840i even but at the end it was the technical and design USPs of the RX-8 convincing me. After test driving a black one idling a little bit too rough I tested a gray one and this is mine until today. My father joined the test drive and his only comment was 'you would be stupid not to buy this car'.

I had a Sileighty and when I saw my RX8, I was smitten. My wife loves it too so I sold the S13.
Previous owner was in love too. I even got a call from the guy he bought it from wanting to buy it back to race.
I still keep in touch with the previous owner and I asked him once if his girlfriend knew she was #2.
I guess I didn't need all that money after all.
She's expensive, cantankerous, delicate, sexy but expensive. Everything I want to do costs $1000 minimum.
But when she sings, and the way it drives... So worth it.

My story started with 2 perspectives. My dad owned 3 RX7s (2 FC gsl-se and an FC Turbo 2) so I've always known about the existence of these engines, but thhe other side is that I've seen the RX8 announced in a magazine, back in 2002 when the press cars were coming out. And also bc of NFS U1 (yes, 1) when I've seen the RX7 FD and then the NFS U2 came out and I've seen the RX8 and WOAH that thing was so damn nice. At some point I remember the RX7s costing 30-40.000€ less than RX8s and that was sad for me, because it was sooo expensive, and I thought it would never go down on price. I even was about buying a 94 FD from the UK for 2000 pounds, but it didn't came out as I expected. Anyway, some years later after owning other cars, the RX8 went very low on price (and the 7 sky rocketed), that I decided that after my 1st mazda, my 2nd mazda had to be an RX8. And yes, it is........ right now, it's my only car (I don't daily it tho, but I can, and I have the tune for that). The day I was looking to buy one, I first contacted a guy who had a good RX8, but the guy was sketchy, so I decided to buy from a dealership, more expensive, but more warranty..... that's what I thought, until there were problems, uncovered by the warranty. But the first 3 months I was so happy with it, I put like 5000 km on it in 3 months, that's crazy, but I didn't care, I loved it, and I still love it. After so much stuff that I did to the car, it's the best car I ever owned (previously I had a 323F, a Seat Leon MK1, Lada Niva blyat davai, and an Opel Astra), but the RX8 is so perfect. Whenever I'm driving it, it makes me smile like the first day.

That's how I started. Except it was the first Underground. Back then the car was brand new and I was 13, I was watching the car as something unobtainable - my ''Ferrari''. Another 13 years later I got an RX-8 for the cheap cheap price of £2800 with 34.000 miles on the clock. I still have it today, 8 years after. I still love it.

Great story! I got mine at a discount price; $4,000...the car-yard SMS'd me to drop $500 while I was at the bank getting the money out. 😎 I tried fixing the hot-start issue with a stronger starter motor, but it is what it is. I clean my windows to linger at the petrol station every time I get fuel.

A description of the day, it was a Saturday morning when my brother and I had to fly down to George (a city near Capetown , South Africa) this was going to be my 3rd car after I totalled my previous cars, my brother didn't understand why I'd buy this car even after I mentioned all its pros and cons to him. It made no sense to him that I'd go for a car that is not fuel efficient and has no mechanic in my 400km radius since it doesn't run on a normal piston engine... the Saturday planned for the collection was the 1st of April 2017 to some it was April fools day but to me... I was so excited. I let him drive the whole 1000+ km and he said, it's not bad😂. It's been a wonderful 7 years ever since then because one of my first fixes became a new clutch kit around the same year, a radiator and coolant tank the next year and lastly I did an engine rebuild after I broke a seal in 2020, 😂

First of all thank you so much for helping me fix the power steering on my RX8! I had the same problem with the hot start after I bought the car. I went to the Mazda dealer and they replaced the engine for low compression. It has been a good car since. But, something happened a couple of days ago. The driver side door opens from the inside, but not from the outside. I found that I need a door lock actuator replacement but I'm not sure how to do it myself. I don't think you have a video on that. Any advice?

I always wanted one. But have always been more of a bike guy instead of cars. I didnt want to risk paying €6000 for one with a worn engine. So my logic was to buy a cheap one that doesnt look as good, but is technicly okay. Then i found one. But its the most crusty rx8 you can find in the world. Technicly no data available. But it was so cheap i couldnt leave it. It had dents. A lot of rust. Interior looks like someone used it to move furniture of a whole house. Rear light broken. Paint on the wheels is coming off. So yes, it was perfect for me. :) i did pick it up and it needs a lot of work. But it drives and thats enough for me. Its crusty, but its mine :) I do sometimes think to upgrade to a 350z. But ill just see how long this rx8 will hold and go from there
