- A research documentary examining how 'middle class' is understood in Soweto, South Africa. Made by Mosa Phadi, a researcher with the South African Research Chair in Social Change at the University of Johannesburg and Eyelight Production with support from the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation.
This goes to show that we make our worlds with our minds, I'm not sad if I don't feel sad, I'm not happy if I don't feel happy and I'm not poor if I don't feel poor. It doesn't really matter what others think.
Haikhona!!!! I love my country RSA and kasi Soweto.....cannot wait to go back home!
It's called upper and lower middle class, it happens when your country is doing all right. 👍🏻
This documentary needs to be updated and include the 2021 Zuma riots and the greater than 30% unemployment rate.
Upper middle class
Lower middle class
Wealthy must be shared by the people
Hope you watch the other three parts of this film, especially the fourth. The movie was part of a larger project that led to the book Class in Soweto, by Peter Alexander, Claire Ceruti, Keke Motseke, Mosa Phadi and Kim Wale, published by University of Kwa-Zulu Press. This won a prize from the National Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences, and it has been shown all over the world to critical acclaim.
Is Peter Alexander related to you?
I loved this! What a fascinating documentary. I think at the lower end classifying oneself as 'middle class' is aspirational - not giving up on improvement in circumstances. At the upper end it's about believing that one works hard and deserves more - which I guess is also aspirational. Maybe aspirations are what defines the middle class.
That's why i love SA since they one.
What? Are you kidding me? Some of these people don't understand what middle class is. Some of them are working class.
I suppose the definition of middle class needs to be reclassified. It's a sense of well being. I am working class and consider myself in the middle but you could say that I am at the lower end of the scale. Lower middle class you could say.
I work, I own my own house, I have a car and I am able to save. What I have is relative to what I earn. I am not poor and I am not rich, I am in the middle.
Some of these people here may have been poor or know people who are and because they think themselves better off, they feel they are in the middle. Not poor and not rich.
Nothing wrong with working class.
And most are poor
Middle class is working class. There is upper and lower middle class silly
I love South Africa! I beleive in her people!
4:54 It translates "themselves as middle class" as "themselves as metal cars"
What is the whole purpose behind this research? I'm lost.
for shits and gigz
To find out why many people consider themselves as to be in the middle class.
Thank you, I find it to be misleading. I so wish you could engage me more on this subject.
Ernest Mathebula To prove that some poor people are deluded and suffer a form of Dunning-Kruger syndrome. This type of liberal funded “research” keeps some academic people employed at the expense of finding solutions for miserable people.
@@robt3407 They don't seem to be thinking they're doing very well, they seem to be appreciative of what they have comparing themselves to others around them. The formal definition of middle class is not really clear and not known by many.
The FIRST GUY for the type of job he does he must belong to the middle class, but again to be part of middle class you must have some amount of money in the bank
the TRHEE PEOPLE in the middle are POOR,they are not living in reality if they think they are middle class
The last woman she belongs more to the UPPER MIDDLE CLASS, she own 2 business and she has people working for her, so if she has a good amount of money in saving she belongs to the UPPER MIDDLE CLASS , not MIDDLE CLASS
What I don't understand is that 66 % of Sowetans are middle class, but only 20 % of Soweto's populace pay their electricity accounts....... How does that work? 🤔 Oh yes, Eskom justs writes off R 2 billion every year and others must pay for it.
To abolish the disparities between the rich and poor, education must come into play.
Yes and care for the earths SOIL and WATER! People value bourgeois nonsense all over the world. We are all human and need thought for future generations

There's only one that stands out, the rest I'm not sure
There is no longer Middle Class it's either you're rich or you're poor.
Yay for the Black people! From Texas, USA.
👀
I find it ridiculous to do research on poverty in ekasie since spatial planning says it all
So what are Zimbabweans complaining about majority are better than this. We consider this as ghetto anyway reminds me of budiriro, kuwadzana , dzarasekwa and mbare not the matapi flats mbare has areas with houses like this.
Theres no such think as "middle class" you're either rich or poor!
@realtotherealest and there is the rich.
This is what we consider middle class ua-cam.com/video/4b71anixabk/v-deo.html . Places like in harare tynwald ,water falls etc....
Soweto should take care that they take care of everyone. Black people that is. The wealth of the country must be shared with all the citizens of Soweto or you're asking for a civil war which would ruin your country and the progress it's made.
What the hell are you trying to say?!
Three poor and two middle class.
