There's more crossover than you'd think actually. Henson was actually a pretty big player in the development of animatronics, and would often use things like radio controlled puppetry to achieve effects that wouldn't be possible otherwise. If I had to guess, they probably used Waldo technology, or a glove that used radio waves to allow a puppeteer to control a puppet remotely in real time.
