    I think your videos are great and learn something every time. The Garbage range of all-in-one stereo systems I believe began in the UK with Amstrad Tower systems in the early 1980s. I opened one up and there was nothing inside except one board and a bunch of wires. This video was painful to watch, but I did all the way through and the best part was the Hot-Snot glue fix.

      Unfortunately there are tons of units just like this out there. They are marketed towards seniors that still have some old records and are downsizing and just dont have the space. Their hearing is going and they sound good enough for them. Radio shack used to sell crap like this back in the 70s and 80s. Their concerrmate and clairinette systems comes to mind.

    You know what that stunning no treble showcase beauty needs on top? I nice potted plant that leaks out of the bottom every time it is watered. I had another retro Teac retro CD player thing brought to me for repair. I was thinking to myself, no way am I wasting time; but picked it up and it was very hefty and solid. I was pleasantly surprised it was actually MADE in Japan and very high quality. Meant to look like an all-american-5 Bakelite radio and done pretty decently. Anyways, easy fix by cleaning the CD laser (earlier Sony mechanism with the beam splitter that gets dusty). It had a very nice natural sound because they cared about the speakers and their actual housing. Not that nasally hollow box sound the cheap stuff puts out.

      If you want Teac at their finest these days, buy from their Esoteric line.
      If there was a once great brand that's truly passed ... Akai.

    • @RuneTheFirst
      @RuneTheFirst 6 років тому

      That is incorrect. The name is owned by the Gibson Guitar corporation, as well as Onkyo and others. I expect they'll be on the market soon as Gibson is staring bankruptcy in the face. They'll either go on the chopping board or as a restructuring move or the whole mess will be broken up and sold. Gibson's CEO doesn't seem to get the importance of quality. Even their website's pictures show damaged guitars.

    • @gavincurtis
      @gavincurtis 6 років тому

      Teac is owned by Gibson? That explains everything then. Cerwin Vega is also a lost cause now. After Gibson took over, it was almost impossible to find the last remaining TS-42 21" horn loaded subwoofer in the USA within months. Inventories of Cerwin Vega's passive speakers are about gone.

    • @RuneTheFirst
      @RuneTheFirst 6 років тому

      It's worse than it seems. Gibson also owns former greats Philips (consumer), Pioneer, Onkyo, Stanton, and of course other instrument brands such as Baldwin and Slingerland. If you want any of these now it's off to eBay and Craig's List for old ones.

    • @Watcher3223
      @Watcher3223 6 років тому

      Well, with regard to Philips, it's only a portion of their consumer electronics business that was acquired by Gibson Brands.
      Also with regard to Philips, a lot of their consumer electronics products were crap long before Gibson got their piece of the pie.

      Yup it is, but it belonged to a little old lady (neighbour brought it to me to fix) and it has sentimental value. Chances are it was a gift from a family member that has passed, and when people get emotionally attached to things.
      I know that feeling. I have an old electric clock in my workshop that had been my grandmothers, and then my mother had it in her kitchen, then it went out to my dads workshop, and now it is in my workshop and still works.

Ads are there for a reason they help fund this channel so 12voltvids can continue to make good videos like this one. I spend hours watching this channel, and I've learned alot of good information.

      @kevinsvideodump 6 років тому +2

      Not exactly -- there are some differences. For example there are different platter sizes; some have an auto-return tonearm and others don't; some use a metal counterweight and others use a spring-balanced tonearm; some have a genuine Japanese-made Chuo Denshi CZ800 phono cartridge while others use a Chinese knockoff of it; and some have a diamond stylus while others have a sapphire stylus.

    Old stereos were worth fixing because when they are fixed you have a Hi-Fi quality system!
    New systems are so damn cheap they're not worth fixing. ( unless for fun) Even if you are able to fix it you're still stuck with a cheap ass system!
    If a company was able to put pride into a system with Quality Parts & mix the new technology we have, they could have some really great products today!
    Unfortunately it's all about how much profit they can make off of the least amount of product and work invested in it!

    TEAC continue to make some decent kit, if you're willing to pay good money for it. Their DACs in particular are very good, they have a good line of mid-range turntables and until recently were one of the last manufacturers of CD recorders and hifi tape decks. They also sold (in the UK at least) some quite nice AV receivers which were rebranded Onkyo units. But I guess in the modern era you have to keep your head above water and going downhill will do that -- the average consumer won't pay proper money for kit any more.
    This particular one just looks like a fairly standard early 2000s midi stereo system in a wooden box. That side of things isn't really a problem, and the fact that it all works still is testament to that. All well-proven, half-decent cheapo stuff. They needed the "nostalgia" angle though and bought in a cheap Chinese horror to fill the need for a record 'player'. And it's that bit that's garbage.
    I have noticed that these crap TEAC units mostly only sell in North America. Presumably they're being imported by the US subsidiary in an attempt to feed the bottom line. Although some of it has started to leak into the EU market of late as well.
    Still, this unit is a lot better than the later wooden "nostalgia" players, with the slot-in tape players and the CD players which are effectively $10 DVD players with the video portion disabled.

Other names that have fallen are the RCA brand and of course, Crosley. I have a feeling my TEAC reel to reel weighs more than this entire unit! Such a high audiophile turntable too!

    Working on such kind of crap made in China shakes self confidence on part of service men. These things are not meant to be serviced or repair. I wonder there is no authority in the whole world who could ask Chinese to stop producing garbage. Or perhaps we should boycott these things. Or, every country may check the quality of stuff before putting on the shelves. Our new generation is used to this quality because they've never came across with the quality stuff made in US, Canada, Europe & Japan etc.

      Ah yes the old bsr. Almost forgot about those.

    • @RoughJustice2k18
      @RoughJustice2k18 6 років тому +1

      The BSR record changer turntables had AC motors - big solid ones - not the cheap piddly governor types you find in cassette decks. Many had a rubber wheel under a metal platter and could play 78 rpm "WW2" gramophone records.
      A few of them also had ceramic cartridges with flip needles and the anti-skating was minimal to zero with stable tone-arm weight balance. Decent units too.
      If I was considering collecting vintage audio equipment, and part of it included turntables, I'd go with BSR or Garrard record changers, not the cheap plastic "budget" crap made later.

    • @terrywilson4118
      @terrywilson4118 6 років тому +3

      BSR made a range of higher end stand alone turntables with counter balanced tone arm and a better anti-scate set up suited for a magnetic cartridge, you could get changer models and single play models. They were usually badged BSR Macdonald, they all used the rim drive ider set up with a shaded pole AC motor as far as i know...

    • @riverhuntingdon6659
      @riverhuntingdon6659 6 років тому

      There was the odd one, all single players, with belt drive and the big AC motor. They came with ADC cartridges normally. Sadly they were replaced by one that had the same sort of fixings, but a 12V DC motor and a truly dire speed regulation switch. Many "Amstrad" Tower Systems were built with these. The only good thing was you could change them for a proper one, with the SC12M/H cartridge. Recently mind, I DID fix one of the cheapie ones with the DC motor, fitting a proper switch and replacement motor.

    • @danmackintosh6325
      @danmackintosh6325 4 роки тому

      @@riverhuntingdon6659 Ahh the C129R etc, horribly plasticky but still better than a "Crosley" and the like. Some even came with reasonable magnetic carts from the factory. The speed switch is horrible on those, but the main issue I've seen is caps on the speed control board making it run slow (and the motor being worn out of course).

    Neighbor gave me a similar Crosley all-in-one to look at... no sound on any mode. Removed the back cover... found several small boards connected to main board by removable plugs. But.. all the plugs were securely attached to the main board by silicone glue blobs.... and the small boards were riveted to the support brackets. The main frame was also riveted to the particle board-faux walnut cabinet. Back cover replaced... end of project. Neighbor later told me it went to electronics bin. Similar story on a Bose radio/CD player. No sound. All sub-board connectors were glued to main board and that board was securely attached to the plastic cabinet. I guess Bose just replaces warranty units, anything out-of-warranty... you are out-of-luck. BTW, scored several Toshiba DVD R/PB units at different thrift shops. Only one didn't work. Found one of those mini-lytic caps bad that caused the disc not to do final read. Those 'Trashibia' DVD-VCRs are not easy on tape... they will rewind a tape at full speed but will not slow down when approaching EOT. Probably no reel speed sensor.

    It’s not so much the ads, but that they’re not on-topic. If they would match the ads to the content, I suspect that the advertisers and the viewers would both be a bit happier. I don’t need ads for male impotence while watching videos on electronics servicing, but if they advertise test equipment or electronic parts, I’m more likely to watch the ad just to see if it’s something I might need in the future! The potential is there; Google just needs to get off their a** and do it - as it stands now, it’s not much of an improvement over broadcast/cable TV. In fact, it’s probably worse, as the ads just cut in any old time, rather that at a fixed time interval, or at a “break-point” which the content producer could add in ahead of time (and do a fade-out/in effect right before/after these “place-ad-here” markers)

      I made nothing on this. It came in as a paid repair but I didn't charge a cent because as I said in the video of you were listening I don't want to be married to it. As soon as I charge anything I am expected to warranty my work and this is something I ain't doing on this pos. I did it as a favor. The Samsung tv I did after I will be paid for but this one was a free be.

      I have blown up a few things with the microwave transformer. Plasma screens are pretty when they go pop. I am now slowly eol an old small b/w tv. I have it converted to a clock. Well actually the clock is running on an old BlackBerry but the output runs out on my cable. I intend to leave this thing running 24/7 to see how long it takes to etch that screen to the point that there is no more life left in it. You'll see it on my bench on top of my soldering iron. It's an animated flip clock done properly.

    Crap-o-phone of the first ordure. Wood'll be good for kindling. An insult to the old TEAC name, same as those Philips lookalike "turntables" Crapley makes. Me, I'll stick to my old ones. That "record deck" is a joke, first appearing in really cheap'n'nasties from the Far East here in the 80's. The clips can be used on old BSR decks mind. The tape deck's a heap as you say, bet it's DC bias, what that thing is is an elcheapo MIDI system from the 80's with a rather vulgar casing. Nothing a good bonfire or garbage truck wouldn't fix !

    That phono reminds me of the time a co worker asked me to fix his car radio
    he brings me this removable chasis and not the whole/complete radio, insists that it was working fine and just quit on him. when I told him I couldnt fix it because it wasn't the complete radio, he insisted it worked like that until recently. I suspect he stole the detachable face plate out of someones car and expected me to get it working somehow! so you think you have a lost cause? Try convincing a co worker that he stole only half the radio and that I couldn't fix something that wasn't all there! I didn't tell him that as I didn't want to get knifed lol

    Probably made in the same factory where all these Crosleys, Jenesn, Ion Audio and all the other crap is made. At least it has (some) sign of build quality ... if the front is wasn't just flimsy plastic, used a better record deck and cassette deck. You almost have the same oscilloscope that I have.

    Its too bad they used the TEAC name in stuff like this !! The same as for Crosley !! Last night I was listening to my TEAC 3340S4 Channel tape recorder/player that uses the 10.5 inch reels. I also have an Original Crosley radio that belonged to my Grandfather David Townsend. That Crosley radio was a LARGE table top model with I think 7 or 8 tubes, I serviced the chassis on this about 3 years ago, but now I have to find someone to strip the finish on the cabinet and maybe refinish it as well!!

    Sometimes a second hand turntable isn’t the best. I’m sorry somebody sent you a dud unit/broken secondhand garage sale stereo which is what this looks like. Also the company TEAC originated in Japan, but the parts are from the TEAC of China. That’s why it says China and Japan on the back. It also said California on the lid because the TEAC of America made this with the parts that were imported from China, which were originally imported from the Japanese company. This probably was a good turntable back when it was made, but it’s obviously been worn out.
