i need your help for note types. could you help me with that
I downloaded Obsidian a couple days ago (after watching a Nick Milo video) and then I ran across your A-M-A-Z-I-N-G "2021 Comprehensive Obsidian Zettelkasten Workflow" video.
My initial intent was to set this up as my primary re-learning tool (after finally understanding that reading a hundred books and 10k articles/blog posts/etc every year is knowledge that simply evaporated faster than water in a frying pan...).
I enjoyed your aforementioned video so much that I began checking out many of your other videos, and I was blown away by the one on which I'm leaving you this comment.
My perfectly healthy and fit wife had a massive stroke 5 months ago (and is still in the hospital). She is suffering from severe afasia, and is making progress with her speech therapy by using flash cards to re-learn syllables and phonetics.
Your spaced repetition suggestions are game changers for me, as my wife will be returning home next week and I'll be spending several hours a day with her to assist in her speech recovery. Anki and the add-ons you suggest are going to be fundamental. I just downloaded these today and, in the space of about an hour, I've been able to create some cards with images (front side=question) and the syllables that verbalize the image (back side=answer), adding my own audio recording to allow her to listen to the phonetics.
I've spent years watching UA-cam videos and listening to "how-to's" and reviews, etc.
But I've never run across someone as dedicated to sharing knowledge and willing to spend enormous time and effort in the details to help people appreciate the subtleties of programs and add-ons.
My deepest and warmest compliments to you (and I'm sure my wife will second them once she's onboard).
Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it! And I’m glad it’s proven to be valuable to you ♥️♥️♥️
How is she now, hope she's better.
This is an awesome use of Obsidian and Anki. Thank you for the detailed implementation process . . . All the best!
glad you're enjoying it Greg :)
Great stuff Bryan, I find myself coming back to this video again and again as I try to get my workflow set up. Keep up the good work.
Glad you find it so helpful! That’s what I aim for :)
Wow Bryan, you weren't kidding, that was a ton to unpack and I'm sure it was countless hours to dig thru all of that in making this video. Much appreciated!!
Im glad you enjoyed the video! thank you for being here! :)
yea i second this. i wanted to do a little research before committing to an app / plugin for the time being and boy did i get an unexpectedly thorough overview. great work Bryan
Best Anki - Obsidian Explantation ever. Thank you Bryan
Glad you think so :)
at 56:00, just make sure that after making those 2 new fields, in order for them to appear, you gotta go into "cards" (right beside fields), and under "back template", add
"{{Obsidian File Link}}"
"{{Obsidian Context Field}}"
right below whatever else you have in that box
❤️
Hey Bryan! Thanks for making this video.
I'm currently a student and is studying a subject that requires extensive rote memorization. I'm glad I didn't need to barge through all the github repositories and watch tens of utube videos to get the right workflow.
Not to mention, your comprehensive timestamps are TRULY appreciated. I knew about spaced repetition, so I could skip through sections real quick - saved me a ton of time.
Your method of testing errors were also helpful in me deciding to use Obsidian_to_Anki!
As a new user to Obsidian, I'm incredible grateful for all your content :)
Keep up the good work~~!
glad you found it helpful!
Now this is what I’m waiting for!! Thanks for uploading it :)

thanks man, your explanations are always on point, you never miss any detail
Glad you like them!
Thank you, Bryan! That's gold content!
glad you like it :)
really cool video! I learned many new things from you. :) I usually use anki, but I think the obsidian to anki is still a little bit complicated for me, so I started to use neuracache. Works gread so far.
glad you got something that works for you!
Yout content is crazy good and detailed. Keep up the great work! 🐄
glad you enjoy it
Yess!! supposed to have a lesson when this starts but they just cancelled :) :)
Massively need to learn this too - active recall is life but I've never been able to implement spaced repetition

great content Bryan! thanks
Thank you!
Man, many thanks for this content. I'm using Syncthing to share the vault with my smartphone.
my pleasure!
Thanks Bryan - I decided to give Obsidian a try after seeing your comprehensive workflow video 2 weeks back.
I have learnt a few new things in this video, especially that I could create the File Link and Context field. I have tried to set it up. After I created it in Anki, it does not show up in Obsidian-to-Anki plugin. But finally figured it out as I remember that you covered it somewhere.
Also, I felt that your walkthrough of the final addin felt rushed. Maybe, you need to take more time to play with that plugin and then create another video to show it comprehensively like you have done with the other addin.
Would be interested to take a look at how you create programming flashcards. Looking forward for that video.
Awesome! Glad the video inspired you to try it out :)
Programming flashcard video coming soon!
@@BryanJenks has this been done yet?
I need something like this in my life.
the plain text to flashcard workflow?
@@BryanJenks I meant I need to start using spaced repetition.
@@GavinFreeborn dude yes, its amazing.
THIS. IS. AMAZING.
Glad you liked it :)
Thank you, this is very helpful for me, especially for someone who is a total noob in spaced repetition. Btw, I am not really sure how necessary it is to do spaced repition except for a setting like university or learning languages. I mean you can look up everything on the web when you need it. We always have our smartphones with us, we work with computers etc. Nowadays, I think it is more important to learn how to retrieve information instead of memorizing it.
Glad it was helpful! There are some things worth memorizing or at least keeping top of mind, languages are a great example for one
It's hard where to draw the line on internal vs external memory. Internal allows your brain to create connections. External mostly doesn't do that.
spaced repetition is great for long term memory so really anything you are trying to learn not just uni
Hi Bryan, Great content :) I’m also diagnosed with ADHD and trying to make my memory little better. Do you still use flashcard repetition system or move to something else ?
i still use Spaced Repetition in Anki though i do not rely on it heavily
Loved the video. Whats the advantage of having the Anki plugin as opposed to just making a deck in anki?
content hosted in obsidian that can change and sync to the anki cards
Thank you Brian for your great work. Your videos should win the oscar for best explanation-videos.
I tested some of your anki-tips, and they really work well, except ...
... the "add file link" and the "add context"-thing.
In the option of the obsidian-to-anki-plug-in I cannot select the Anki-fields for Obsidian File Link and the content field, although they do exist in Anki-Basic. The note type table shows only "Front" and "Back". Alternatively I chose "Back", but the cards don't look pretty, because there is no blank line between the answer and the Obsidian link.
Although the link does his job well.
Do you have any idea how to fix this?
Glad you enjoyed the video :)

@@BryanJenks Problem solved! I watched your video one more time, and you mentioned the "regenerate"-button in the option menu. I did not hear it first. My mistake. Now it works. Thanks again!
@@denkmalerin4593 Hey. I'm stuck with the same thing. Obsidian doesn't show the additional fields in settings. Could you please help?

Hi Bryan, do you know if there is a way to mark a full note as a flashcard ? I basically just want the title of my note as the front, and all its content (regardless of blank lines in between) as the back. Blank lines seems to be hardly handled from obsidian-to-anki plugins. Thanks if you can advise me on this 🙏
been a long time since i played with the plugin, i dont use it anymore so i dont really have any idea anymore
Hi Brayan, I always enjoy your videos. I started following you just a few weeks ago when I started getting interested in obsidian.
I watched this entire video today and then signed to your newsletter and went to your blog but I can't see where to find the templates you mentioned in the video.
Can you please point me in the right direction?

Hi Bryan, thaanks for the video, this truly is a game changer! Do you know if there is a way to make the link from anki back to obsidian not only open the document but show you the exact chapter/block it is from? Thanks alot

thanks Bryan.
You're welcome!
Hello. Tnanks you very much for your video. In redex, when i try to add tags, this part i don´t understad: Cards made using this format support tags - simply append a "Tags: {tag_list}" to the end of your block. Can you help me please?

Hey Bryan, excume me, what extension you use to highlight on a webpage?
Mmmm I think you may be thinking of memex when I had it installed
Wow dude this video is awesome
glad you liked it!
Just chiming in to say that Obsidian_to_Anki can do basically everything flashcards-obsidian does, using the Neuracache-style regex.
Yes, and I show that if you want the simpler syntax with less headache there are other options :)
puhh, overwhelming, just wanted to check out how obsidian works compared to notion, now I'm not even having set up my obsidian noteakeing templates but also feel that I would need anki for spaced repetition and 3424 adins already.
Is there any option for collectively download a preset.
I would need obsidian as a notetakeing app, to connect my thoughts and than a template for papers, ideas, etc. that is automatically connected to anki for periodical repetition.
for my setup all plugins included, when you download my template vault it comes packaged in there already, just need to update things
cool, thanks! regarding neurocache, can I also just provide a block reference as an answer?
i haven't actually tried that so i don't know!
Hype
:)
How did you get your custom note card (Programming Card Type) to show up in the Obsidian_to_Anki Note Type settings? I'm only seeing the basic 6 at the moment. Also, the extra fields "Obsidian File Link" and "Obsidian Context Field" don't show up on the basic card type after adding them. Is it supposed to sync automatically?
Nvm, got it. Needed to "regenerate note types" in the plug-in settings so that they're updated after modifying custom notes
glad you got it :)
@@BryanJenks @Oliver O I was successful with the Basic type but when I added extra fields to Cloze card type in Anki they don't sync and show up in Obsdian_to_Anki plugin settings up although I regenerated note types.
Does anyone know the fix for this?
Great and usefull video. Obsidian and Zotero would be usefull too.
Definitely! i have several videos about them together on my channel
Thanks!
thank YOU!
Thanks Bryan, I've tried to use Anki before, but this really helped. I made my first typed response card, and inspired by you added some LateX. Front: \sum\pi Back: uwu ....
Lol uwu

Great video and beautiful anki plugin! I added new fields "Obsidian file link" and "Obsdian Context Field" in basic card. In Obsidian, inside anki plugin, I activated File and Context option, and regenerate Note Type Table. Then restart both Anki then Obsisian, but I'm not able to select these fields (they don't appear) inside Note Type Table. Some ideas to fix?

❤️
Can the highlighter colours and text colours go into Anki too?
i dont use the workflow anymore, not sure
Hi , I like the look of your Anki Cards. Could you share your card CSS templates ?
check out my faq repo on github, its in the discussions
@@BryanJenks Cool thanks!
What is the benefit of using this plugin as opposed to just having the Anki application open alongside Obsidian?
personally i prefer just using straight Anki, for many though, a perk is that you can update cards in obsidian and have them sync those changes in Anki, include audio, images, style with markdown rather than Rich Text editing in Anki, and the data is therefore also stored in plain text within obsidian. I personally think its more overhead than I like in Obsidian, but this is just for those that do want to use these workflows.
There's potentially a native SRS plugin coming to Obsidian and when that comes around i may reconsider and will likely make a review video of the application :)
I would almost say they never it is hanging hyperlinks in the card in Anki that takes you back to the markdown file in Obsidian, here you can have direct unambiguous links to your notes in Obsidian and then the source.
Amazing🎉
Thanks 😄
what design do you use? that ancient thing looks cool!

Hi Bryan, do you know if the obsidian plugin still works ? Because i can’t see my flashcards in anki. It scans the vault but nothing happens.
i havent used it in ages so i couldnt tell ya
It doesn't work for me either. After scanning the vault in Obsidian, it may create new decks if the target deck does not exist but new card creation isn't there at all.
How can I add this backlinks in the file? For me the "toggle backlinks in document" option only appear on some files, mostly older ones
to make a back link, just link a note to another note and then check the pane. there's nothing in the obsidian releases that should make it so older notes have the feature and new ones dont, the program doesnt work that way .__.
@@BryanJenks I mean the back links section inside the note, like your workbench
@@lorenabezerradealmeida8512 you might be talking about the backlinks in document 3rd party plugin, I don't use it anymore since obsidian added the preview mode backlinks in document feature a few releases ago
I can't quite get one thing right in my mind, why are we trying to do this from within obsidian when we can add cards directly from within anki? What advantage does writing in obsidian give us?
there are pro's and con's to every approach, some people might just prefer to keep their cards next to their notes rather than manually add them to only anki, its just another tool in the toolbox
Is there a way to send existing cards/decks from ANKI to obsidian?
not that i know of
How do i get this gravebox font in Anki?

Do you mean "Natural Language Dates"? Can't find NLP Processing
thats the name of the plugin, but NLP is Natural Language Processing which is what the plugin is DOING :) it's also why i love TODOIST :)
Why your tags aren't showing during the review?
Tags in Anki?
After your video, I fell in love with NeuraCache and immediately deleted the Anki plug-in.
I don’t care for the Anki plugin either lol
Unfortunately the Obsidian_to_Anki plugin doesn't seem to work reliably. I've tried troubleshooting it in so many ways but no 2 runs of the plugin seem to work the same way :/ A dealbreaker when you want to use it for automation. Also, very sad, since combining Obsidian functionality with Anki would be so good to save time.
I personally prefer to make my cards myself
Did you leave the browse window when running it, by any chance?
Thank you, Brian this is genius but sometimes to much Information in one step.
it's definitely a fire hose of info, but I mean for some videos like this to be the kind to review, and re-watch when trying to set things up or for preliminary help with the system. Apologies if it is too much!

textsniper for text: textsniper.app/?ref=bryanjenks

@@BryanJenks 👍 tnx u for da response...i'm beginner to dis obsidian app n the features are little bit intimidating 😅..would tell me how to open *obsidian to anki* window (to write or create flashcards) when ever i click the *obsidian to anki* its just popup a small window (obsidian to anki connected)🤷...
How do I fold?
Folding text is an extremely powerful tool for outlining or writing, in order to focus on what you're working on.
To use folding, go to Settings (the gear icon on the left) and turn on Fold indent and Fold heading in the editor settings.
Obsidian has the ability to fold both markdown headers and indented lists. Note that at the top of this note there is a downward pointing arrow next to the title. If clicked, it will fold the entire note up, and if clicked again, it will show the note. This can be applied at multiple levels of markdown, as well as multiple levels of indentation in lists.
I think you got it :)
I found it funny that in a video on how to remember things better you can't remember the statistics about spaced repetition hahaha
🤡
I cannot suspend my default deck.
you suspend the cards
we can close anki as long as obsidian isn't running, yeah?
you can close either app at any time. to use this plugin you need both open
❤️
brain answer.
🧠️
i wouldn't recommend anyone using the spaced repetition plugin , it's plain terrible , stops working for no reasons. I will just recommend using Anki or Remnote or Logseq.
i just use anki by itself personally
Anki has an abomination of an algorithm for learning :c I prefer mnemosyne
never heard of it ._.
