As a white person, would wearing a quinceanera dress be culture appropriation? I am not Latino, I am not Hispanic (that I know of..) but I’d love to have a big beautiful dress like a quinceanera dress, but there’s many mixed reviews on the subject, I just really would like to know, would it be cultural appropriation for me to do that, and would it be culture appropriation to want to have an actual quince? Say you’re white but you want one of those beautiful quinceanera partys and you know everything, the meaning behind the party, the heritage, everything and you understand the background, would it be culture appropriation? (Just to clarify, I do not know anything about quincenearas and I’m not looking to have one, the celebration is absolutely beautiful and it would be lovely to be invited to one, but the dresses on the other hand have had me in a chokehold for forever, they’re just so stunning so just clarifying I’m not looking to have a quince it was just a hypothetical question)
Having a quinceañera would be appropriation, but the dresses are just big-skirted ballgowns that have become associated with quinces. You could wear one for a sweet sixteen, which fills a very similar social and cultural role.

Im latina and i swear quincenearas (sweet 16s) are more extravagant than our actual weddings but trust me you havent lived until youve went to a quince! its our culture to do big 16s rather than the 18th or 21st and we go FULL OUT almost every tiktok in this compilation is a quinceneara dress (they're usually really big!) Definetely watch some quinceneara videos on yt we even hire wedding photographers and videographers XD
@@picklegirlmwah9766 2 main reasons is 1 - many cultures have their own "coming of age" like think sweet sixteen or turning 18 or 21, so we just don't do those usually and just the 15th/16th. 2 - it's similar to weddings because they're giving away their daughter to adulthood similar to giving a daughter away to be married like in weddings (although a lot of people go crazy extra and they're so expensive now-a-days for no reason T_T ) Hope that helped a bit?
