Okay to be honest, i've been searching different videos on how to sing in the whistle register. Sure, there are alot of results that came out, but not all are proven effective actually. And as I came to this video, her tips REALLY WORKED for me because I found it very easy as the steps are specific and not complicated in my opinion. Now? I have accessed the whistle register, my Highest is C7 , no joke and lowest is C6. I tried some mariah carey whistles and Morissette amon whistle and it worked. But I don't practice it everyday because my voice also needs rest. Anyway, GOOD JOB MS. JANICE! You have another subscriber herreeee. Thank youuuuuuuuu
Impeccable video! I've already accessed the whistle register and use it often however your point on relaxing the muscles as one ascends is helping me so much! I love your tone btw!
WTF. After watching whole bunch of videos, this seven year old video is the one that actually helped. Why didn't I see this sooner. Curse you, UA-cam algorithm! But yay I actually understand how to do it now. Next step: scales, because I can only hold up to an F#6 and a lot of the songs I want to sing with whistles do a G#6 😁
Omg this helps a lot!!!! Thank you soo much! I think for everyone who is watching this, the trick to getting it down is practice !!! Can't wait to get better!
I tried your exercises but half the time there is no sound coming out of my voice and my voice is cracking. It also feels a bit like screaming (but very softly). Also I have a question, do people use their whistle register when they scream?
Roshni. S Yep, they absolutely do! Just like how people use Chest when they shout (though they should use Mix instead). The only difference is the intensity and the control. You have no control over a scream or shout because it is volitile but you have control over singing :)
Hi! okay? first thanks for the video. I learned how to make whistol through an inversion technique. Pulling air in until it reaches the register and then out. It worked. Hugs from Brazil.
Wow! This is a great exercise by an even greater Vocal Coach.....although I need to keep practicing, I hit my Whistle Register in almost no time using these techniques. Many Thanks for posting this amazing lesson:)
I love the way you explain it.. sounds logic.. still i can't do it.. actually i used to be able to do it but after i hit puberty, it's just gone... 😭😭😭
Hello I just meet you and you are fantastic, it's not a Voice That you have but a bird at Same place. Thx for share your joice of singing! Bisous from France
I used to be able to sing in the whistle register 2 years ago. Then earlier this year I lost all my headvoice and whistle register. What's weird is that earlier this year I got tonsils, they're getting bigger but my doctor said it won't affect my singing.
Hi Janice, thank you for the tip. I would just like to ask how do you shift from falcetto to the whistle register? Also, when i try to sing in whistle register, i sometimes feel a strain under my chin. Is that correct? Would like to make sure that i'm doing it right. :) hoping for your response. Thanks in advance.
I'm getting into whistles more and more every day, however I'm having problems using them on a scale. Seems like random notes pop out even when I'm trying to focus on one particular note. Any good exercises you can recommend for more flexibility? Also, why are my whistles stronger in the afternoon and almost nonexistent in the morning? Thanks for your help!
You could try the following: Speaking in the whistle in the morning (yes it is possible) and/or humming up your vocal range into your whistle notes. A simple 1-2-3-2-1 sort of scale will do. As for why the whistles are stronger for some singers at different times of the day, that entirely depends on how comfortable the singer’s voice is at that time of the day, and also how “free” the singer’s voice (from his/her other usual vocal habits that may be prohibiting his/her access to the whistle register) at that particular time of the day ;)
Nice video, thanks for sharing :) Iwas just wondering if it is possible to expand the Whistle register? That maybe after some time you can even reach higher notes? :D
Your whistle notes are so lovely, but damn, that low speaking voice is so rich and mallow. Thanks for the tips, I'm still not able to make any sound when trying to find my whistle register, but I find your video the most explanatory.
When trying to reach the whistle register..do you suck the air backwards after you hold your breath? Or as you hold your breath and push the air out? I kinda got the technique but not really sure if I'm doing it correctly. I can produce the whistle note as I'm sucking the air in. But if I try to push the air out..it sounds stuck and cracked. What would be the best way about trying to learn the technique with out damage to my voice? Any advice would help. Thanks
hello. New sub here.I am a tenor in the choir and know how to use my falsetto. There was once that I was able to access my whistle voice but thats just about it.I am now i terested in tapping this part of my voice.Im in my late 20s.is it still possible? can I still do the whistle tone? do we have to have an adequate rest before accessing this?Thank you for the answers in advance!
Thanks for subscribing, Hiro. You can tap into your whistle note even if you’ve passed your 20’s - there isn’t an age limit to accessing this vocal register :) And yes, it’d be helpful to have a good rest before attempting the whistle, especially if you’re new to this. This is because the vocal cords have to be really relaxed so you can zip them up gently. After a little vocal warm-up, it’s quite a good time to try it first thing in the morning, before our usual vocal habits kick-in the through out the rest of the day. That said, once you’re used to using your whistle register, it’d be quite easy to access it whenever you want ;)
When you say zip the cords leaving only the anterior of the cords for whistle/vibrate? Vocal cords lay horizontal in your throat right? So what direction is anterior of your vocal cords? The part going towards the back of your neck or the direction of the front of your face since your cords are horizontal? And zip means to close off the air passing through the c vocal cords? Help?
It's a matter of getting used to accessing your whistle register. Using it as often as possible would help - it'll strengthen muscle memory for your vocal cords to switch to whistle mode whenever you want ;)
JaniceYapTV I also cant access it all the time and apparently its because once you start doing it or when youre doing a lot of talking / singing already then your vocal chords can swell even slightly so the hole that produces it dissapears or something. Apparently its best when your vocal chords are relaxed thats why its easy to do early in the morning after a night's rest . How true do you think this is ? It makes sense for me .
Can someone help me? If i warm up my voice by doing reverse phonation? Will that also help me? Then was i can do it like that? Would i be able to do it the proper way by breathing out?
I can go c,d,a,f 1,2,3 and 4 and i am a male. I am proud of that. What she said is excatly how i USED to do it. My ears start to go weird when i done it
To continue zipping your cords, your throat area has to be relaxed and your vocal cords have to be zipped up GENTLY. In other words, there shouldn’t be any feeling of tightness or strain. Zipping up the vocal cords can be difficult for some, for a number of reasons. It could be that you’re singing too breathily, not practising good breath support, vocal injury & etc. However, if you feel your cords are already zipped up, and yet you still can’t seem to go any higher, it is likely that you’re not in the right vocal register just yet. To sing whistle notes, while zipping up the cords, a singer also has to allow his/her voice to change into the whistle register from the head voice. When singing in the whistle register, the resonance is still somewhat feels like it's resonating in the head voice area, but it feels like another flip from head voice into a higher resonance. It's hard to explain this, but basically the feeling is similar to when you shift from chest voice to your mix, and from your mix to your head voice - you'll feel like there's a flip into a higher register. You can watch my video on "How To Sing Comfortably", where I talk about the different vocal registers, to get a better idea :)
JaniceYapTV Hi Miss Janice. I've been trying to work on getting this whistle register and I was able to do it! The problem is only through inhale phonation :( how can I translate it into exhale? :(
Hello.. Hope u notice my comment.. I'm confused actually I do whistle but not sure is right, I do whistle the air come in my mouth and I do whistle, it is right??
Hello Hanz, at the moment we are not conducting vocal classes on the whistle alone. However, learning how to access the whistle register is already part of the Unlock Your Voice™ Technique, which we teach as part of our vocal syllabus to all our students through our vocal courses. It would be sufficient to start with this video for now, as these are the basics to getting into the whistle register. But of course, other factors come into play as well, if the whistle register is not working out for you just yet - it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what unless I can hear you in person. I would say, work with this video first, and see how it goes :) If you’re still having problems, you can pop over to our school for a Vocal Discovery Lesson to properly analyse your voice and learn immediate ways to solve some of your existing vocal problems that may be contributing to your not being able to access the whistle register. We could work specifically on the whistle register then too, if that is your vocal goal. However, do note that it takes time for a singer to learn the muscle coordination required to sing in the whistle register. The time can vary from a day to weeks, depending on what vocal habits a singer currently has. More info on the Vocal Discovery Lesson can be found here: www.unlockyourvoice.com.my/vocal-discovery-lesson/ Rest assured, if you’re not based in Malaysia, the lesson can also be conducted online via Skype. Simply send your email address & contact no to info@unlockyourvoice.com.my to get started ;)
I used to have an access in whistle register but when I started to develop mix voice and high headvoice, I lost my whistle register. Btw,I can sing an A5 note in mix and high Eb6 in strong headvoice
THANK YOU SO MUCH I LOVED IT!!! I am a 13 year old baritone (yes, my voice has matured already) and i have a whistle register. I actually posted a video of it if you wouldnt mind checking it out :) I always had a little consistency problem, but lately i have been studying alot and have not been having much time to practice and i noted that i literally cant control my whistle register anymore! I know i still have it because sometimes when im on my higher head voice range it breaks into whistle but i cant purposely acces it and control it anymore!! Do you have tips on how to be able to enter the whistle register anytime and with less effort like you do? Thanks in advance!
I’ve checked out your video, and it sounds like you’re already whistling in that video, though I suspect you can potentially go much higher than that! :) As I’ve mentioned in reply to “Love Vocals” below, to be able to sing whistle notes anytime, it's a matter of getting used to accessing your whistle register at any time. And, using it as often as possible would help (like talking and singing in your whistle notes early morning before you have your breakfast, while you’re driving, taking a shower & etc) - it'll strengthen muscle memory for your vocal cords to switch to whistle mode whenever you want ;) Additionally, you can practice quick jumps from your chest voice to your whistle register too - that way, you’ll also strengthen muscle memory for your vocal cords to switch quickly between those to registers instead of having to go through your head register first before getting there. A song like Mariah Carey’s “Emotion”, the “In…side” part, is good song to practice this with.
When I first tried to sing with whistle register I hit 7-8th octave but it's super soft and light. It was also accompanied with an airy tone. I wanna know how to get back on that part. I can only lightly squeak it haha
Haha...it happens :) You might want to try the whistle at a time when you haven't been singing all day, because usually after singing for a long period of time, our vocal cords have been conditioned to coordinate differently as required in whistling. Hence, getting into the whistle may be a little harder, though not for everyone. I like to do mine first thing in the morning after warming up, before I’ve sung for hours all day. All the best!
Lana Ali nah I think it's normal, almost everyone I know (including myself) sounds different when we speak english, our native language or our second foreign language

There is something called First Language Influence and MTI Mother Tongue Influence while speaking other languages and even with sentence structure.
Technically, the air should be exhaled when we phonate (make a sound). However, when we sing in the whistle register, there is very little air exhaled. As such, it is not uncommon for singers to have described that the feeling is as if the air is going backwards; as if we do when we inhale ;)
You're not singing in whistle register. I started like that. Now I can do it when I breath out... Has been a long road, if you really want to nail it, you'll manage to.
hai.. i wish you can help me... i can do thay register but its only at morning.. and cannot do when im in the middle of high note mix voice sing. morning and at late night... do you know how to strenghten the voice? please reply. thankyou so much
Hi Louisius, the only way is to practice it more often through out the day :) Not all day long, but maybe a 5 - 10 min practice singing in whistle and then wait 2 - 3 hours and then try again.
I use to be able to hit all the way up to a D8 but due to unhealthy technique I ruined my voice and cant hit them anymore but I can go up B6 in head voice.
While unhealthy techniques can cause permanent damage to the voice in the long run, it is not always the case - your vocal cords could still be in healthy shape, but are simply not working at it's full potential because unhealthy techniques can restrict the vibrating, coordination, stretching & etc of the cords. It's best to check with an ENT specialist to determine if your voice has really been ruined - you might be pleasantly surprised that it really isn't ;) And if it's not, you can use healthy vocal technique to hit those high notes again. These 3 steps in the video should be a good start to point you in that direction.
How long has it been? In any case, there are very effective treatments now for Vocal Nodules - you should explore your treatment options and you could possibly restore your vocal cords to their healthy condition. In the meantime, take it easy on your voice - whenever you feel any strain, tightness or discomfort when singing/speaking, it's a sign of unhealthy vocal technique. Don't continue singing/speaking when that happens, instead develop and practice healthier techniques in vocalising/singing. Singing is supposed to feel easy & comfortable, and you can definitely achieve this with some practice :) All the best!
ohhh watched zillion thing about whistle register. I DID IT this time! thanks janice
Yay!
Yes darling? 😂😂😂
Same yahoooo
Wow, when she talks i never thought that she can do the whistle register... But i was wrong. Nice.

Omgggg i can do it. In my first go. Whohooo! Thanks. It helped a lot to touch my neck making sure it doesn’t vibrate.
OMG thank you! This helped me to get it for the 1st time
Thanks so much!!!!!!! Sending u good vibes
OMG ,thank for the video
This video really help me for practice my whistle register
At 4:30 sounds like a C7 but then sounds like a B6, I think is a B6 with some centimeters sharp, but that's amazing.
Thanks!
Im not sure, but think of the whistle notes of the song "Emotions" by Mariah Carey, the last note she hits is a C7. So I think its a B6
Thanks! Now I can whistle in my own and I can hit C5-F6
By the way thank you for this tutorial i learn hiw to unlock my whistle voice.
Now i lost it bec of the acid 😭
Is this the same as inhale phonations? After you can make a sound how do you train it and build strength and flexibility? This videe is great!
Omg tysm, you just made me sing some whistle notes
edit: I did it like 2 times and now I'm back to not being able to sing whistle notes :)
i Love to whistle like that! I want to registered too to my Vocal chord! :) i Love whistle! thanks Miss Janice Yap
I love the way you explain it.. sounds logic.. still i can't do it.. actually i used to be able to do it but after i hit puberty, it's just gone... 😭😭😭

Thank you so so sooooo much
What are the warm up exercises for whistle register?
Janice, I have a question. Is whistling has a specific note? Isn't that based on what vocal type that you have?
Best explanation on how to access your whistle register!!! Everyone else gets too technical and uses very specific jargon. Thanks!
please create a video on how to vocalize whistle notes or tone.

You can tap into your whistle note even if you’ve passed your 20’s - there isn’t an age limit to accessing this vocal register :)

@janiceyap I need ur lessons!!!
I have a really high voice and my whistle sounds like yours but im not sure if mine is actually a whistle??? 😬

My vocal chord would fall apart when hitting above G, how can I keep zipping it?
To continue zipping your cords, your throat area has to be relaxed and your vocal cords have to be zipped up GENTLY. In other words, there shouldn’t be any feeling of tightness or strain.
Zipping up the vocal cords can be difficult for some, for a number of reasons. It could be that you’re singing too breathily, not practising good breath support, vocal injury & etc.

Please tell me, does the air goes out or comming in?
OUT !!!!! INHALING IS VERY DAMAGING
Thanks now I can do it. It just sucks though
I speak 2 languages and I sound different when I speak English does that mean o have 2 different voices
Lana Ali nah I think it's normal, almost everyone I know (including myself) sounds different when we speak english, our native language or our second foreign language
There is something called First Language Influence and MTI Mother Tongue Influence while speaking other languages and even with sentence structure.
Is it wrong if the air is going inside instead of breathing it out? cause I'm inhaling it but could still hit some few whistles and some squeaks.
I used to do that too, but I've recently watched many tutorials about whistle notes and everyone says it harms your vocal cords
Technically, the air should be exhaled when we phonate (make a sound). However, when we sing in the whistle register, there is very little air exhaled. As such, it is not uncommon for singers to have described that the feeling is as if the air is going backwards; as if we do when we inhale ;)
i only can do whistles when i Breath in..is this a whistle?....
That's called reverse phonation, and it sounds like that is exactly what she is doing in this video.
thats not a whistle, that is not singing, when you sing you push air
I can breathe in too but i cant breathe out
You're not singing in whistle register.
I started like that. Now I can do it when I breath out... Has been a long road, if you really want to nail it, you'll manage to.
inhale phonation is what you are doin.
I totally forgot for some moment why I came here, just look at her smile🙂
the videolink to vocal registers doesn't work. What's the title or link?
I'm kinda worried...won't it rip off my vocal cords??does it have a long term effects?
It's not an unhealthy way of singing, so it's not damaging. Unless you do it wrongly, of course ;)

hai.. i wish you can help me... i can do thay register but its only at morning.. and cannot do when im in the middle of high note mix voice sing. morning and at late night... do you know how to strenghten the voice? please reply. thankyou so much
Hi Louisius, the only way is to practice it more often through out the day :) Not all day long, but maybe a 5 - 10 min practice singing in whistle and then wait 2 - 3 hours and then try again.
Practice like vocalizing or practice with the whole song ?
Start with vocalising first...simple notes :)
+JaniceYapTV i did it already.. but still .... i cannot control it ...
JaniceYapTV I went to an ENT and I have nodules
How long has it been? In any case, there are very effective treatments now for Vocal Nodules - you should explore your treatment options and you could possibly restore your vocal cords to their healthy condition. In the meantime, take it easy on your voice - whenever you feel any strain, tightness or discomfort when singing/speaking, it's a sign of unhealthy vocal technique. Don't continue singing/speaking when that happens, instead develop and practice healthier techniques in vocalising/singing. Singing is supposed to feel easy & comfortable, and you can definitely achieve this with some practice :) All the best!
JaniceYapTV I found out I had nodules about a month ago.
You could check with an ENT specialist on what treatment options are available to you ;)
I still don't understand how to "zip up" my vocal chords.
inhale then hold, like hold your breath but gently
