I hope this helps! It takes a little time and effort, but it really is worth getting a good handle on key signatures and circle of fifths to help you understand your music more deeply. The next video will be about relative minors and scales! Just in time for Halloween!
thank you, you have made my understanding of tuning my harp so much easier .
I have not seen the circle if fifths before this great I look forward to the nexr video.
Very helpful. I've read that in books, but your explanation made it much easier to understand. Thank you.
stella woolley Always happy to help! 🎶💕
Lynne Montauk Great! Glad it made sense! 🎶💕
Thanks so much for this, Anne. As a child, I played violin and all I'd have to do was look at the key signature and I'd already know how to play the piece! Ah, the innocence and precociousness of childhood! Not so for the harp as an adult, though; it's a whole new learning curve for me!
I SO didnt get this in Music Theory 40 years ago. Makes perfect sense now. Thanks so much!
Your channel should have more Subscribers!!! ❤❤❤
Oh thank you so much. I printed off the Circle of fifth s worksheets. I am new at learning this and I appreciate your teaching!
Finally I understand the magical circle of 5ths...Thank you x
Oh that's great to hear! Well done!
Thank you I have a busking harp with levers new to music and I have been trying to understand what it means to tune a harp to a particular scale as my harp is in G but didn't sound right I changed the f natural to a f sharp after watching your video and the difference was amazing. I am very grateful for lots of reasons not least that the better it sounds the more likely I am to practice.
Very encouraging video thanks for sharing 🎶❣️😎
This is an excellent explanation of the Key Signatures, especially starting it by ear which really helps to make sense of it. Your mnemonic is more "G" rated than mine: "Four Cops Get Drunk At Eddie's Bar"
I learned Fat Cats Get Drunk At Euclid Beach 🤣
Ha ha, you're funny!
Thank you dear Anne, this helps a lot :)
Thank you so much
This is so informative, Anne! The Circle of Fifths really is a meaningful way to explain things I memorized as a child but didn’t understand at all 😊 Thank you for the great video!
Linda Browning The Circle of Fifths is awesome! Glad this cleared things up for you 🎶💕
I also was introduced to this as a child and it was frightening! I now get it. I wish you were close for lessons. :)
Lifesaver! This was a lifesaver candy for me. I have struggled with this concept for a while now. You are awesome for demonstrating this. :)
So glad it helped!
WOW!! This is an another excellent tutorial of yours, Anne!! I've just shared this video to my harp friends. Thank you soooooo much!!! I'm a big faGreetings from Kyoto, Japan!
Wonderful! Thanks for sharing!
I play clarinet and the amount of stuff I learned from this is insane.
Nice! Glad it was helpful!
Thank you Anne for dymystifying Key signatures and their corresponding lever settings! Wonderfully helpful video for new harpists! Would you suggest to tune to E flat major for the most versatility? Ive been tuning to 444hz for therapeutic harp, but would this perhaps not work for the standard tuning of 440hz and key signatures as the pitch is higher? Grateful for your insight! 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you so much for teaching me this and in such a simplistic way that makes so much sense. 😀💐
You're welcome Linda, I'm so glad it made sense! It's a big topic!
Thank you Anne ! indeed very useful and clear tips , explanation , and worksheet bundle ! Key signature start to make sense for me...
Glad it was helpful!
This was very helpful! Thank you for taking the time to record this for us.
Glad it was helpful!
Anne - This is magnificent. I've never heard it explained so simply and clearly. I regularly recommend your beginner book to other teachers. "Big Adventures for Small Harps" Which book of yours would be "one step up" from that book? Thank you for all you do to expand harp & music education.
Thank you so much! At some point when I have an enormous block of time I would love to revisit "Big Adventures Small Harps"!
This was absolutely brilliant thank you!
trb10 Wonderful! Thanks for watching!
Oh wow this is excellent Anne.
Thanks Anne! That was a big topic!
Anne , this is a big topic and will take me quite a bit of study, but I like understanding what Im trying to achieve.
Very well explained. Thank you very much!
Thank-you! Glad it was helpful!
This is soooo helpful! Thank you! Sharing with my harp circle. 😊
Heidi Horner Wonderful! Thanks Heidi 🎶💕
sooo helpful thank you Anne
Maat F You’re welcome 🎶💕
The way I learned flats was to look at the last flat and count down 4. So Ab down 4 would be E major.
Yes, that would work!
Wow that was really helpful, you're such a great teacher Anne! My harp is in the key Eb, I had it in C but the teacher I went to told me Eb is better. For tuning I use the app Christy-Lyn has recommended in a video before (the app is called pano tuner).
I had my harp tuned in C Major for a whole year before I even realized that tuning in Eb was a thing! Now I keep my Dusty 36 in Eb, but my Christina therapy harp remains in C. Glad the video was helpful!
@@annecrosbygaudetmusic I think it's a bit of a cultural thing too, in germany/europe Eb seems to be the norm.
Great video. Thanks!
Thanks for watching, Tony!
Super helpful
Connie, were you learning music theory in the middle of the night LOL!
@@annecrosbygaudetmusic I do some of my be watching in the wee hours. No phone, no dog, no cooking, and hubby is sleeping. House is super quiet. Many newbies have been asking some of these questions so I shared on LTHT. Thank You Anne. I never did glue the circle of 5th together until this. Thank You
I learned this but backwards years ago. For Sharps, I picture top G and tell myself there's one sharp, then down 5 semitones again to D and tell myself there's two sharps. Down five semitones to A and tell myself there's 3.
Conversely, for flats, I picture bottom F and tell myself there's one flat. Then I count up five semitones to B-flat and tell myself there's two flats. Then up five semitones again to E-flat and tell myself there's 3 flats.
I use this pattern all the way to seven flats and sharps.
There are so many patterns! Yours is a new twist for me...it works!
@@annecrosbygaudetmusic your pattern was a new twist for me too. For a harpist, counting in just naturals makes sense to you. For me, as a pianist with no harp experience, counting in semitones works too. Harp interests me as it looks like the inside of a grand piano. The flipping of levers would've confused me an awful lot had I not studied piano before. Also, my pattern doesn't involve counting the note you are already on, whereas yours does.
I play the piano. Im currently learning to play guitar but ive found harp more easier to learn because the notes are not hidden just as the piano pattern.
I agree, the patterns are so easy to see on the harp.
Seems like a good lesson. Wish I could hear it better. So low, even with my volume turned all the way up.
That's odd, it doesn't seem low from my end. Maybe you could try using headphones or earbuds.
So how do you play accidentals within a piece when you of course can't be tuning mid-song?
Each string has 2 possible pitches, the one it’s tuned to and a half step higher when the lever is engaged. So the blue string can be F or F sharp.
My little harp has no levers! Do I have to just make the sharps/flats with the tuning tool?
Personally, what I would do is take a deep dive into learning about modes. Then you can have different moods and colours without levers! You could take a peek at my Emoji Modes workbook.
@@annecrosbygaudetmusic I don't understand exactly what you mean but I'll look into that. Thank you.
But what about the minor scale? My song says A minor... I loved your explanation of how levers work, still need to get some installed on my harp!
Yes, now that's another video! I should definitely do a video on relative minors.
@@annecrosbygaudetmusic Looking forward to this!
i just shared your video ina facebook group about the harp , i hope you dont mind and thanks a million times for this video , im far less clueless now haha
Wonderful, I appreciate the share! "Far less clueless" sounds like success to me!
ah i see why my harp sounded different thn the one in a video even tought its was the same string, thnks llot
sethnakht12 Right! If the levers were up the pitch would be different.
@@annecrosbygaudetmusic im a beginner ; i started 2 weeks ago ,but ive been watching everything i could find online to help me get the basics, again thank you very much this was helpfull!
sethnakht12 Good for you! It takes awhile to get used to tuning and levers, but it gets easier! Are you tuning to C Major? That’s a great way to get started.
@@annecrosbygaudetmusic yes ive been told its beginner friendly!
