I’m coming to this after watching most of the Apple+ show Manhunt and I have to say it’s interesting to hear the real history again. However, I will also say that this biography is more than a little bit complementary to John Wilkes Booth. It was pretty well acknowledged by people that knew him and saw him perform at the time that he was not a good actor. He did not have the natural talent of his father, or his brothers. He was affected by that and that helped contribute to his wanting to be a big star by killing the president of the United States. I think he ended up acting his final greatest role by doing so. But to suggest that he was anything other than a mediocre actor treading on a family name of great actors is, I think to give him too much credit.
I think people like the irony of how someone at the top of their profession with all kinds of reasons to keep his head down and just do what they do, yet they believe so strongly in a cause to do something so drastic.
