As someone who has done nearly all of your tutorials, the move into slightly more advanced carvings is very welcome and a good rounding to your library. Also - he looks awesome! Best wishes to you this Christmas and thanks for the videos!
Thanks for the website tutorials. My friend has tried to talk to me for years into woodcarving for 46 years. He and others used to take their lunch hour and sit around a table doing various woodcarvings. we worked for the same employer. I was interested, but my work kept me to busy, I've been retired for over 10years and he retired last year. He suggested we get together this spring and he would introduce me to woodcarving. He doesn't know it but I've been watching your website for many weeks now AND I AM INTRESTED! My dad taught Jr. and Senior Shop in school. He could make anything. Cabinets, stereo speakers, carve wood figurines from walnut, make silver jewelry, etc. etc. Watching your videos had stirred something in me. It must be genetic. He's been gone for many years now. Ii may no good at woodcarving, but I need to try. It's in my blood. Thanks for sharing your terrific talents with us.
Greetings from Finland! Can I just say that the gnomes you make, are just fantastic! In ancient times, Tonttu (Gnome) was a very important creature amongst Finnish houses, people used to give gifts to them such as porridge and bread and such. Eventually Tontut faded away and only the remaining old folk were believing in them. Nowdays Tontut are only remembered as Christmas elves (I have always been against American Christmas elves, they're too flashy). People nowdays just treat gnomes as some funny looking garden decorations. Mostly posing in disrespectful manner showing their arses or giving a middle finger. Which is just sad in my opinon. Merry Christmas Doug, don't forget to leave a bowl of porridge and a cup of coffee next to your house to keep the small ancient ones happy :)
Absolutely thrilled to see this on my feed this morning! I started carving less than a year ago and am addicted! I’ve carved 62 Santa’s and 2 snowmen so far this year to give away as Christmas gifts and most have been based on your tutorials! Thanks Doug for sharing your talents and time. Appreciated more than you know!
@@manuelamonteverde2233 manuela, si usa il tiglio. Difficile da trovare da noi. Ti consiglio di girare qualche brico e cercare i listelli di Ayous (lo chiamano anche Obeche). Doug, you are an excellent teacher! Your demonstration of the eyes simplifies what has seemed like a daunting addition to my skillset. Thanks for all you do for the carving community.
Agree completely, your an exceptional advanced teacher. Somehow you manage to clarify the difficult steps better than anyone else! Also video quality is excellent. Thank you for sharing and all your time Doug.
Texture, depth and shadows! Check! And fish hook the temples into the cheeks... (taking notes here 🤓). I think this was one of your best instructional videos yet Doug. I really liked how you explained the carving of the eyes. That is going to help me tremendously. Great video! *Insert coffee slurp sound byte here*
I feel you could do a whole video on the “twang”. Popping the chip out after you slice it and sending it flying with a “TWANG”! Such an essential skill! 😂
Brilliant job sir. I really enjoyed this video. I know what I'm gonna be doing later. LOVE IT. I've not been carving a full year and because of you I feel I had been doing it for years. You got me carving and a friend of mine is carving because of me. You started something over here in the UK. STAY SAFE mate.
Wow, thanks for showing the eyes in such detail. I know you've explained how to do it before, but for some reason this way just clicked and blew my mind. Can't wait to try it on my next carving.
I have been watching this video periodically for a few months and now that Christmas is coming on us, I plan on carving a half dozen or so as Christmas Presents. The high water mark this video brings is the transition from cartoon eyes to realistic eyes in a carving most of us will do. I loved the gnome's head a bit ago, but I see it this way, a gnome and Santa are mostly just a hat style away from each other.
Doug, what a great surprise to find this tutorial this morning! I can't wait to try this one. You are so very kind to share your talents with all of us! You are the reason that I have just started carving! I'm really enjoying this creative craft.
Thank you for your carving tutorials. As a new carver I find it very helpful when you explain the different cuts and steps to make the little characters come alive!
Doug this video could not have come at a better time. I've been struggling on a Santa carving and kinda gave up on it. This has inspired me to pick it back up and finish. Thanks Doug. Be well
One of the best teachers on the planet. Great presentation. Great comments and coaching. Love what you offer and your talent is insane. Thank you Doug for inspiring me and others to be better and expand our skills. Keep up the great work. Just awesome stuff.
Great video, I mean really great quality lighting and sound. So many videos have poor sound and lighting that washes out the detail. It's great to see guys like yourself ddalo and Mr Coats taking the time to produce really decent vids. Thx for your time and effort.
Just watched the vid through. Great way for all carvers to see the value and impact of deep clean cuts , shadows and sharp tools. I’m going to give this one a go for sure. Thanks Doug!
WOW! This is awesome. Thanks for sharing this video. I am a beginner but I've learned a lot from you every time I watched your videos. God bless and more power to your channel.
Awesome as always Doug,, that is the best way I've seen eyes done,, thank you for that.. I say yes show us more detailed videos,, because you have all the beginner stuff,, I really appreciate you taking your time and doing these videos much love.
Very inspiring Doug. I'm still in the "simpler" phase, hope to nearing this level summertime next summer/fall. Please keep make these videos, I've learned more from you over the past 6 months than I thought possible.
I have been carving for about a year and have progressed fairly well but this video took me up a level. Although my Santa did not look nearly as good as yours I had way more depth and shadow than any of my other carvings by far. Thank you for putting these videos out!
I have watched your channel for a couple of years now I belive it has to have been. And you are really starting to get incredibly skilled with that knife. Love to watch your vids before I rest its great to relax with your vids.
I’ve watched your carving skills develop over the years and continue to be impressed. You have grown tremendously and you can show and teach what you’re doing. Very enjoyable watch. Nice job 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great video Doug! The eye portion of this tutorial I found to be very informative for my use. I'm sure a lot of your subscribers should find this video a tremendous help.
Hey Doug! I just wanted to say thank you for the videos and tutorials. Your videos are why I bought knives and started to learn. I love it! I've started using mainly chisels as my tools, and I'm really enjoying them. Hope you're well!
Great video. Even with the more detail that you put into it, you still make it look so simple. You are a true artist and I really enjoy learning from you. Thanks for the video.
Wow great tips , I don’t own any gouges . So my two attempts with just a knife, looks like Santa on a diet ! Never tried the notch cut on eyes , I liked that . Your carving turned out great!
I'll never be able to carve something like that but it was still a great tutorial to watch. I'll be able to use some of those ideas w/ simpler carvings. Thanks for sharing!
In my humble opinion you are the leader as far as teaching your skills. Merry Christmas and a very happy new year. Peace, Scottie (carving is my free time).
Love this one. Nice to push us out of our comfort zone but upping the detail and advancing in the tools. But done in a way tou can still do it with one knife if you want. Thanks
Thanks for this video Doug! Can't wait to try him! A lot of my carvings have big hats, because I've really struggled figuring out the eyes. This technique should really help.
As a Truck Driver with boring down time. I think this is my Meditation.
Going to go back and start from your earlier videos.
You are a great teacher

Oh man I've been waiting for a higher detail tutorial from you! Awesome timing because my Saturday morning is clear!

Fantastic carving..so lifelike..Can't believe how just a little black pencil in the eyes can bring the face to life. Great Video....
Wow, thanks for showing the eyes in such detail. I know you've explained how to do it before, but for some reason this way just clicked and blew my mind. Can't wait to try it on my next carving.
Thanks for sharing your amazing talents. I have given away several carvings that brought me much pleasure.

This is the best I have seen on doing the eyes. I have such a hard job with doing them. So thanks. And the three corner cuts too.
Thank you Doug, i will do it this evening.
Love this project a little bit more detailed.
The "V" in v-cut stands for "versatile". Such a powerful little cut. Awesome as always! 😄
