Missingno doesn't damage your game outside of hall of fame corruptions. The scrambled sprites can be fixed by viewing Bulbasaurs pokedex entry. The other effects that have been documented are results from other glitches such as super glitch in yellow. Another explanation of the effects is that these cartridges are old and probably dirty meaning they wouldn't read properly causing strange graphical glitches. Anyone who says they lost their data probably caught Missingno and then their battery in the cartridge died meaning their data was lost and the blame was put on Missingno. Although I wouldn't reccomend trying to catch or use Missingno in yellow simply because it's really hard to catch him because the game is likely to crash upon encountering it and Missingno down levels to lv1 every time he gains exp through battle he also has absurd amounts of health so if you use him in battle when your opponent attacks, you may be sitting there for a very long time. @@Missingno_Miner If I'm not mistaken, the effects of Missingno are caused by the sprite (which clearly isn't image data) being decompressed. Sprites are decompressed in SRAM using three buffers which adds up to addresses 0xA000 to 0xA497. The "sprite" it decompresses overflows into the Hall of Fame data stored in SRAM 0xA598 to 0xB857. Essentially, it just overwrites your save file without informing you. That's also why the data stays corrupted when you restart the game (without manually saving). This also explains why Ketsuban (Japanese Missingno) and yellow Missingno crash the game if encountered. Their sprites decompress past SRAM and overflow into WRAM, generally corrupting the sound data (addresses 0xC000 to 0xC0F2) in a way that freezes the game. (If I'm not mistaken anyways.) This is also the reason the stable Missingno variants (the ghost and fossil ones) don't cause any of the bad effects. The sprites used by those are presumably hard coded, and are actually used elsewhere in the game. As such, they don't improperly decompress and overwrite anything else in RAM.

I used to do two things with this glitch: 1. If you surf Cinnabar coast after leaving Safari Zone, you encounter Safari pokemon with no ball restrictions. 2. Missingno can learn Cut and Fly. If you level up Missingno, it evolves to Kangaskhan, which can learn Surf and Strength. No other pokemon can learn all four (useful) HMs.
I've always thought Missingno looked like a totem pole. A glitched totem pole, mind you, but I've always thought of him as a relic of an ancient glitch tribe that occupied many a game in early development.
I was 17 when PKMN first came to the States. I remember the Mew under a truck myth, but was never able to make it work. I encountered MissingNo. many times in the wild and fought it many times, but I never caught it. I mainly used the item dupe glitch to get more TMs, because back in those days that was the only way to have a party with more than one or two Hyper Beam users.
My name was ANDY in red/blue so I was lucky enough to encounter mewtwo pretty often. I caught like 150 of them with my duplicated master balls and taught them all different moves. I then transferred most of them into a pokemon stadium cartridge
@@toshido_yamada You can look it up online on how to do the glitch. But after you did the process and then chose a city to fly to, the city would be incredibly bugged out and difficult to get around. When I was a kid, there were tons of rumors on hidden pokemon and things that you could do in those glitched out cities, even if they weren't true lol
Sometimes I wonder how stories like these got passed around so much without the internet, and to people who aren't familiar with where it came from. Even before I was into Pokemon, I knew about Missingno and Lavender Town. It's weird.
Yep, I remember being 10, and having no idea about ev's, but first finding out when my rare candied lvl100 cloyster suddenly went from 300 defense to 301, then 302, 303 and not KNOWING how it happened, but understanding that fighting/training would still raise my Max level Pokemons stats.
MissingNo influenced me more indirectly. Directly, sure it made curious over a variety of glitches, but indirectly, it showed me Mew’s picture through glitched Hall of Fame Data, before I knew what it was. Been fascinated with Mew ever since.
Nah man. They'll still be level 100 after the battle, even without xp gained because the game still runs a check there even though it gives no experience.
Trainer Name Data: "Jeezus" Wild Pokemon Encounter Data: ##### (default generation numbers) ...But after the "Old Man" fight/cutscene, some of the data gets swapped... Trainer Name Data: "Old Man" Wild Pokemon Encounter Data: "eezus" (trainer name minus first letter) Thus - the glitches you talk about only occur because the encounter data BECOMES the trainer's name! In a normal game, the Trainer Name Data doesn't affect the Wild Pokemon Encounter Data - so having a specific name WILL NOT create a unique play experience UNTIL the "Old Man" glitch is performed, in which case: the name BECOMES the Wild Pokemon Encounter Data... P.S. --- IMHO, glitches truly are the "ghosts in the machine" - and they exist to complete the spirit of a game... and that usually includes a little bit of mischief and a little bit of exploitation... ;-D
Missingno was before my time, the myth in elementary school for me was an "invisible shiny bulbasaur" in gen 4 lol. I remember a friend saying he got it from leaving his cartridge in the action replay in the ds overnight. I tried to do it and it didn't work. Eventually I figured out what bulbapedia was and looked it up, and discovered it was actually a glitch pokemon that looks like a whitish box with a shiny effect and bulbasaur's cry. im sure he got it by messing around with cheat codes and corrupting a pokemon by accident lol. I miss those days, when catching dialga and giratinanwas so exciting to me i remember my heart pumping and adrenaline going through me lol. I wish games still made me feel that level of excitement
Indeed. Btw heres a fun fact: apparently MissingNo. was not the only glitch Pokemon in Red/Blue. It was the first discovered and most famousbut there are a lot more 😱
Missingno isn't the only glitch pokemon in red and blue as well. My favorite is by far h POKé, an 80 foot tall behemoth square. Just the thought of a giant cube looming over a poor innocent trainer creating a lens flare as it eclipsed the sun beneath in front of it filled my head with imagery.
I was 9 when I found this out. This was when the internet was still becoming a thing. I tried it out and it scared the shit out of me. My pokemon became people and started naming themselves.. No joke.
How was Missingno ever discovered though? Who was the first person to talk to the old man, fly to Cinnabar, then go up and down? And how did it get SO widespread in a world before internet to tell us these things? I remember just knowing about it as a kid, but how I found out, I couldnt say I recall.
Even without the glitch, non water wild pokemon can show up on the coast of Cinnabar. So people took botice so ethics g was weird about it. And i guess they dug deeper & dsicovered MissingNo.
I kinda wish Missingno was official, and that it had a glitch gimmick where it would simulate glitchiness whenever you used it. Imagine if it randomly changed its stats, types, and moves mid-battle, and also gave access to little "error rooms" for unique loot. And then in the anime version, instead of Missingno you have a pokemon that embodies cut and censored content, and an entire arc just happens involving it but the viewers only know about it through passing remarks.
Never knew it existed until about 10 years ago when i actually started using the internet. But ive recreated the glitch and I'm still fascinated by it till this day, my man. Some cool shit right there.
This was so interesting because you were so open about the OCD thoughts about ghosts. I grew up in a super-culty Lutheran schism and constantly feared the end of the world. Majora's Mask helped me to feel like I could control it as a child. There are Bible verses about "the moon will not give its light" and "the stars will fall from heaven", so I kept a constant watch out windows 24/7 to see if it was going to happen. But that game, as creepy as it was, gave me some weird sense of comfort like Missingno gave you over ghosts. Video games are amazing sometimes
Great vid this week guys, love the creepy subject matter. I was into the Pokémon anime growing up, never really played it as a kid. If I had I definitely would’ve been the kid who ran around everyone that ghosts were real & Missingno was proof haha. My mom probably would have entertained it, we used to go “ghost hunting” from time to time :)
Missingno also has its own unique battle music. It is triggered by battling your rival without a Pokemon, with a Missingno or battling Missingno without a Pokemon. The music plays a corrupted trainer battle song cycling through various game sounds, but it isn't random. There is a consistent pattern.
The first time I learned Missingno could appear in a different form was encountering the Kabutops skeleton late at night, in a dark room, while playing Blue on Pokemon Stadium. I NOPED my way out of there and jumped into bed, scared as hell.

Potato Patato it's cool you found what you were looking for. Also potatoes are cool and really tasty when mashed and baked.

Missingno I'm about to end this mans whole career.
Missingno can't harm save data.
I used to do two things with this glitch:
"Why am i doing this video? In 2019?"

I remember finding MissingNo e and going to Glitch city when i was younger. I remember it was scary as heck lol
True?
Really?

I was 17 when PKMN first came to the States. I remember the Mew under a truck myth, but was never able to make it work.
I encountered MissingNo. many times in the wild and fought it many times, but I never caught it. I mainly used the item dupe glitch to get more TMs, because back in those days that was the only way to have a party with more than one or two Hyper Beam users.
The first time I really glitched a game. Missingno brought a whole new layer to what a game was to me. So yes Grant I felt the same as you.
My name was ANDY in red/blue so I was lucky enough to encounter mewtwo pretty often. I caught like 150 of them with my duplicated master balls and taught them all different moves. I then transferred most of them into a pokemon stadium cartridge
I enjoyed the video. Keeping Missingno alive for all the other generations that never got to see it. Did you ever encounter Glitch City?
what's glitch city?
@@toshido_yamada You can look it up online on how to do the glitch. But after you did the process and then chose a city to fly to, the city would be incredibly bugged out and difficult to get around. When I was a kid, there were tons of rumors on hidden pokemon and things that you could do in those glitched out cities, even if they weren't true lol
Never saw Missingo. Like heard about him. It exists until the DS era. You can see it in graffiti in the Kalos Region. The End. xD
realy heh lol
What no mention of how Missingno became an eldritch abomination that has on multiple occasions fought a comic book reviewer?
It's been so long since I've heard "among us" used in a sentence that I did not understand it for a bit
Jesus Christ the intro appeared after almost 5 minutes
Sometimes I wonder how stories like these got passed around so much without the internet, and to people who aren't familiar with where it came from. Even before I was into Pokemon, I knew about Missingno and Lavender Town. It's weird.
Well, leveling up with rare candies will not give you any EVs,so grinding your team will actually give them higher stats in the end
So if you have an especific name, you won't need the 126 rare candy glitch, just have a name that would spawn Lv 150 pokemons.
They reset to Lv.100 when they gain experience though, so anything past that won't really help.
And if they are use for link cable battles?
Nah man. They'll still be level 100 after the battle, even without xp gained because the game still runs a check there even though it gives no experience.
Trainer Name Data: "Jeezus"
Wild Pokemon Encounter Data: ##### (default generation numbers)
...But after the "Old Man" fight/cutscene, some of the data gets swapped...
Trainer Name Data: "Old Man"
Wild Pokemon Encounter Data: "eezus" (trainer name minus first letter)
Thus - the glitches you talk about only occur because the encounter data BECOMES the trainer's name!
P.S. --- IMHO, glitches truly are the "ghosts in the machine" - and they exist to complete the spirit of a game... and that usually includes a little bit of mischief and a little bit of exploitation... ;-D
I remember battling with a lvl 999 snorlax.
Still love that very accurate but insane coding breakdown lol
It was the first discovered and most famousbut there are a lot more 😱
5:00 skip that long ass intro
I remember finding this glitch on my own when I was a kid. I was the coolest kid in daycare that day 😉
Dang so young
Missingno isn't the only glitch pokemon in red and blue as well. My favorite is by far h POKé, an 80 foot tall behemoth square. Just the thought of a giant cube looming over a poor innocent trainer creating a lens flare as it eclipsed the sun beneath in front of it filled my head with imagery.
MissingNo. is the first and most famous.
Made the hp bar of my snorlax run right off the screen lol
had that with my lvl127 muk on yellow haha, good times
I was 9 when I found this out. This was when the internet was still becoming a thing. I tried it out and it scared the shit out of me. My pokemon became people and started naming themselves.. No joke.
I mean who wouldn't love to have unlimited rare candies and Masterball?
I caught Missingno in Red Version once and traded it over to Yellow just to see what would happen. It turned into Rhydon
For me, missingno is just a glitch that happens to be created.. *by something*
Missingno is an amazing mystery.
I fear no Pokémon.. but that thing... It scares me.
Only thing i can think of for Missingno is its a pre evelution khangaskan that was lost and forgotten
Yo what if missing no. Is what’s under mimikyu’s cloth?
*missing no.* damn >
Hey kid want some candy?

Heck yeah!!!
"broken reality", how did the thumbnail describe my life in 2 words?
What happens when you catch Missingno in Red/Blue and trade to Gold/Silver and breed with Ditto or any Pokemon?
Am I missing the episode already?
Hell no because I can't love it enough to leave it.
Missingno also has its own unique battle music. It is triggered by battling your rival without a Pokemon, with a Missingno or battling Missingno without a Pokemon. The music plays a corrupted trainer battle song cycling through various game sounds, but it isn't random. There is a consistent pattern.
The video starts at 4:50, thank me later
The first time I learned Missingno could appear in a different form was encountering the Kabutops skeleton late at night, in a dark room, while playing Blue on Pokemon Stadium. I NOPED my way out of there and jumped into bed, scared as hell.

that's a weird way of saying lord helix
2:31 Sorry, I was distracted by OriginalShipping/NamelessShipping, what were you saying?
Skip to 4:55 for the actual video
So if you made your name something equivalent something to articuno at level 2 then you could really make some cool pokemon challenges/runs unless that wouldn't work
Lets hope theres a Missingno easter egg in either Detective Pikachu or Pokemon Sword and Shield
They have a missingno easter egg in pokemon x and y
Glitch City had more of this effect on me than MissingNO did. I mostly just used MissingNO to duplicate items, but exploring Glitch City was always like navigating an abyss.
I'm so glad to know I wasn't weird for being creeped out by Missingno as a kid. Even though I did do the multiplier glitch, I was always SUPER CAREFUL with it and even remember having nightmares of it corrupting my entire game.
I got scared too but I think to my knowledge if you look at creepy things or whatever it can give you a headache or get 😷
Me, a viewer of Atop the Fourth Wall:
"I fear no mon, but that... thing..."
"It scares me..."
Finally, someone else who gets it.
MissingNo should be an UB
When I clicked on this video, my device lagged for 4-5 mins, so I had to restart it.
Missingno is a very powerful glitch indeed :/

As a kid I was scared of the dark
Why? Darkri, as a kid I was afraid of it so I was always scared
Then, I got my first Pokemon game.
And I got missingno and I saw how strong it was and then I was like. "Darkri has nothing on this".
That Ghost Adventures clip made me laugh so hard. Thank you. :)
