  • Today we take the L19 Bird Dog for a flight in Microsoft Flight Simulator - taking off from Kern Valley, on the north edge of Lake Isabella and put it through it's paces. Great little aeroplane!
    We also look at the freeware Kern Valley airfield scenery from flightsim.to!

    Always great First Look videos. I really enjoy your showcases of all those different airplanes and you have a good calm voice to listen too.

    Try his other sceneries too Jon. Most of his are in the same general area and would be great for how you present your videos with short navigations. Also, I kind of like that plane. I like low and slow. :)

    I was lucky enough to see one of these IRL today and have a nose around. Got to say Black Box's modelling is pretty faithful to the real thing.

    First of all - love your videos, mate. Keep up the great work! Your calm and comprehensive style makes you one of my MSFS favorites for sure.
    For your own enjoyment, I very much recommend, that you get rudder paddles with analogue toe breaks and some head/eye tracking equipment, though. It just elevates the experience quite a bit. And you do not have to break the bank completely either. I have the basic Trustmaster rudder pedals and the Tobii head/eye tracker and I've never regretted spending that money at all. You will have even more of a great time flying!

      @@DorkfishFlokus Yes, Tobii eye tracker has been a game changer for me, although I only use it for head tracking as it is a bit too much for me with the eye movement as well. Far better that other options like TrackIR as you don't need anything on your head!

      @@roberthorton9599 That's why I chose it - didn't want to put some extra stuff on my head. And it works perfectly. Money well spent in my books.
      I have the eye tracking on by the way, but turned sensitivity down quite a bit. That hit my sweet spot.
      Especially for heli flying head tracking is a must.

    Nice model..I flew a real one a few years ago, on the grass it was lovely to handle, on hard surface it was like sitting on a POGO stick. It sounds from your review to be a very good copy of the real bird. Looks great..THANKS!

    Like somebody commented here, at around 11:00 it is an UFO flying upside down and synchronising with the aircraft. Apart from that, excellent presentation like always Jon. Thank you! (PS: I can explain: the UFO flies upside down since the larger circumference should be at its base in normal flight, that much I know of them! 🙃)

    • @jonbeckett

      I thought UFOs used gravity manipulation to fly? (which explains the fighter footage of the one rotating it's base towards it's direction of travel). The Robert Lazar documentary is pretty good - and he's no nut-job :)

    • @nicknicholson1268
      @nicknicholson1268 Рік тому

      @@jonbeckett From Bob Lazar's documentaries I understand that UFOs have two modes of flying while manipulating gravity. One in the vicinity of the planet where they "slide" on a path of manipulated gravity, and the other one in the outer space, where they rotate their base containing three ... protuberances/emitters towards the target/destination in deep space and bending the continuum space-time in between. Yes, I agree with you that Bob Lazar is no nut-job. Seriously;)

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Рік тому

      @@nicknicholson1268 The observation he made that stuck with me is that we've never been interested in how they work as a propulsion system - it's much more interesting as a force-field. A tank that can't get hit...

    • @nicknicholson1268
      @nicknicholson1268 Рік тому

      @@jonbeckett I agree with you: people "in the know/with very high clearance" in the armed forces discouraged aviation/artillery to attack UFOs, saying that they are simply untouchable. I understand that this force-field, like you're calling it, is the disruption of the gravity (and time) field around them, and simply any missile or bullet fired towards it will be ... say "deflected" in the way that it's trajectory or energy would be ... say discontinued when meeting this force-field. I remember Bob Lazar once said that he witnessed a UFO piloted by humans on a test flight and, when Bob went exactly underneath the UFO who hovered a few feet above him, he could see the sky from above the craft, the craft becoming relatively invisible in that moment.

    • @nicknicholson1268
      @nicknicholson1268 Рік тому

      It seems that the manipulation of this force-field allows them to reach not only extremely high speeds, but also to perform sharp manoeuvres where, if they were to obey our good Newtonian laws of physics, the occupants would be simply crushed by the inertial/centrifugal forces etc. It seems that the occupants are not subjected to any inertial forces during this time, and also they may have their own microgravitational field to spare them from nuisances of say zero gravity:)

    I have about 400 hours in the Birddog. Towing gliders and checking out new tow pilots. I can assure you, in the real world, you can not be too high. 60 degree flaps, power off, nose down to 80mph, and it’s a lawn dart. It will also incipient spin in stalls if not coordinated and develop into a spin if not caught. The model in MSFS isn’t bad. On hard service runways it can be a handful.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Рік тому

      The Birddog in MSFS was created before a lot of the more advanced flight modelling was available. Newer aircraft use the CFD, soft body modelling, etc - none of which is used in the earlier planes.

    • @bkailua1224
      @bkailua1224 9 місяців тому

      I describe the glide to be more like a manhole cover. Nothing like idle, full 60 degrees of flaps and a full slip, that glide looks like straight down. Was a lot of fun during the 7 years I flew it as a towplane. We always landed on pavement so we installed 600 6 tires and with the smaller footprint it was a little easier.

      My one criticism of it (aside the slightly lower quality modelling) is it seems to hate Fsrealistic for some reason! It has a habit of multiplying the turbulence effect massively, which makes it a bit of a no go in VR!

    I bought this plane because of this video and still can't get it started. Had the same issues you did, but a few more hits of the primer didn't fix it. Been at this an hour now. I've of course restarted a few times as to ensure through my struggles I haven't over primed it, but it still just won't turn over.

    Having flown the real B Dog and made thousands of real landings towing gliders for 7 years this was amusing. LOL "transponders to both" First time I have heard the mags called that. Do you squawk left or right or both on the transponder? In the normal seating position a 6' tall pilot can see over the nose during tail down taxi. Tail is lifting on taxi cause you are going about 30 mph.. More than a few degrees of yaw on landing and you will lose it and ground loop. Looks like sim is very forgiving. Also turn up the sound so it is deafening loud and it will be more realistic. Even with noise canceling headphones it is very loud.

With taildraggers is a different prkblem, hou have to prevent to nose down even if you find some imperfection on ground while taxying. On sim everithing is made easy.
