Creeping up on 80 and occasionally at night a neighbor may hear me harmonizing with John. In a song, he once sang, "It turns me on to think of growing old". He didn't make it but left us a megaton of beautiful sing-along story songs. We are richer for it.
This is written by JD as well... Sad to think he so longed for home and to be there... But the conflict of being on the road and fame. I pray his soul is always at peace and "at home" and he belongs.
John Denver's greatest love was to sing amd that took him away from home for long periods The other was his continuous dedication and commitment to try make the world a better place for All of Us He Used his Voice for world hunger, space exploration, the environment , the animals and peace for our earth John will live in our hearts forever❤
I can't think of John Denver without thinking of nature. I remember that sad day in October 1997 when he lost his life in a tragic accident. He died too young but he left us with a lasting legacy through his music. Rest in peace, John.
Yes, an underrated song, but what an underrated song writer, surely one of the greatest song writers to have lived. Whilst I'm here, his version of James Taylor's "Fire and Rain", better than the original I think, and not to take away from James Taylor.
Lyrics: All of my memories lay in the lights of the highway. All of my nights in old motels and sleeping alone. All of my days on the road with no one beside me. All of my dreams of a place that I can call home. Somewhere in the shade, near the sound of a sweet singing river. Somewhere in the sun where the mountains make love to the sky. Somewhere to build me a faith, a farm and a family. Somewhere to grow older, and somewhere a reason to try. 'Cause I'm tired of big cities, and so tired of big city ways. Scratching off sunsets, and walking around in the maze. Some sweet taxi dancer trying to save me from being alone. Ah, it's much worse than lonely, there is no place that I really belong, I want to be home. I'm leaving this city life, and by night I'm flying away. I'm leaving tomorrow and all of the old yesterdays. I'm leaving the trash cans, the bright lights, and telephone lines. I'm leaving my sorrows and all of my memories behind to see what I find. Somewhere in the shade, near the sound of a sweet singing river. Somewhere in the sun where the mountains make love to the sky. Somewhere to build me a faith, a farm and a family. Somewhere to grow older, and somewhere to lay down and die.
I have always loved this song and next year it will be part of my life as I move from Dallas to Colorado. This song has been in my memory since 1978. I thank the Lord for giving me a chance to make this a reality in my life.
This song spoke to me deeply in my youth. It was like my soul singing with John Denver's voice and guitar. It was my dream he was singing about. And now i am living that dream! I left the city life and now, for the past 22 years i have lived somewhere in the shade near the sound of a sweet singing river, somewhere in the sun where the mountains make love to the sky. Somewhere to build me a faith, a farm and a family... Thanks for singing my soul Henry John and giving me the strength and courage to drop everything and go off and live my dream!
A true 👍 love song that John lived only to find " there's no place I really belong". That is because we are only passing through on our way home to our house 🏠 in Heaven ..with our Father and family 👪 ❤. See you on the other side John . Carlyle Williams.
Before John became a superstar, I listened to this plaintiff song and felt pain in my heart . John spoke to my soul and it was a joy to know others are human, too.
1971 - a great year. Got married. Enlisted in the USAF. Bought this recording (vinyl LP) of JD - nearly wore it out since our records were our only entertainment. No money, No T.V.
My parents were very poor & had 2 TV's plastic ones that were small white that got 4 channels around Seattle one of those TV's only had sound and the other one only had a picture & no sound", so those two televisions it took to watch and listen .
Another beautiful song he had many stories to tell in hes life this one I think was an amazing song that he was telling that he was a lonely person even though he had many people around him. I cared about him.
John Denver, a man who lived the grandest version of the greatest vision he ever had about who he was. All the years that have gone by, and I still miss him. Love, that's all I have for him. For you, John. Love you.
I feel the same way. He was such a good person. I miss him. he cared about the earth and all God's creatures that live on it. he will go down in history for his work to preserve it . You are missed by many.
Never quit. Don't ever back off, and never allow someone else to run your life. Live your life the way he would want you to live it with him in the back of your mind and on the way in which you communicate to others. Treat others fairly, regardless of the differences. You're doing just fine, John would tell you... Stand up, for what you believe in.
After selling my home of 20 years, I moved from my home state to be near my son and granddaughter in the Southwest. Being Northeast raised, I found it very difficult to be here. For so many reasons, things are not working out, so, I’m moving back to my home state ,because that’s I want live out what is left of my life, where I want to be buried. This song touched me in many different ways,so beautiful, so truthful. Thank you for posting, and thank you, Mr. Denver for explaining how I feel about everything in my life, you are sadly missed by all.
This album and a couple of others of JD, Gordon Lightfoot and the Carpenters - got us through the early 70s - I was in the military with a new wife, no T.V. and no money. But we did have a record player.

Wow... what an amazing song! The power in his voice, the calm of the guitar. What an underrated John Denver song, one of his best!
