    Nailed it with , "don't wait for it to be perfect". Because you don't know what's perfect for you until you start doing it. I went from a van to a trailer to a truck camper and finally got a 4x4 with a shell on it. Why? Because as I started going places and spending time, I discovered I needed very little space and creature comforts and loved going down the road that's far less traveled.

      Exactly ! I use the truck to put myself in places where I can be outside every minute I'm not sleeping. Sure, sometimes it rains, but I can handle the odd rainy time inside because it is so rare.

    This is one of my favorite videos if you listen to everything said you guys go over some very good valid points and fears and explain things so well. I rent at families home at the moment spending time with them that I missed in the past. I bought a ford explorer a 2003 that would work for this lifestyle i need to sell my other car before i leave or just have family look over it. I really researched this lifestyle and love the lifestyle I realized a used class c motorhome is what I am needing so can take the dog and a family member if needed with me sometimes and also stay in rv parks if needed.I work for myself as far as my job goes so thats mobile. Ive never done this lifestyle so my concern was people knocking on the door at night etc..probably not common as he said. Awesome video and answers to concerns people have. You guys seem great would love to meet up one day thanks for all these amazing videos.

    I think a van would be really cool a lot of people want to get the B class camper and I thought about that too but more and more that I watch your channel I really dig the scene where people are doing it their own way it's their own thing as their own creation they get that van and they make it how it's going to suit them best you know they didn't go out and spend 120 or $140,000 on something that isn't going to really retain its value anyway you get a van that you like and you start turning that into the home that you want it to be that's what I really dig seeing how everybody does it and how they've got things arranged and see what works best for them it's real life people do in real life things nothing artificial really dig that I think one thing I would like to do when I get my van I seen a thing online where you can get hightops for them I don't know if I could put a hightop in by myself or not but I'm thinking if I could find a body shop that does reasonable work I could have them cut a hole in the top in and install it for me I seen one called the camper special and I thought that would really be cool it'd probably still end up being far less than a class b ,,,then also like Bob said get a runaway camper to

    I am stuck on which van to buy. Someone had a white, 1991 Ford Econline E150 6 cyl 300 engine, with a high top and cargo interior (blank slate instead of plush pimp-mobile lol) exactly what I wanted with 50,000 miles on it. But he wanted $5000 for it and it's 25 years old.....I was stuck worrying that it would need all new everything constantly. Any feedback would be great. I already read Bob's excellent book, it's a reference guide/bible! I didn't think I'd get stuck on which vehicle to get.

    • @stringbender57
      @stringbender57 8 років тому +4

      Ray Sater - Not everyone can afford the ridiculous price of new/newer vans. After all, you will be drilling and cutting holes for fans, solar panels etc. I wouldn't buy a new van to do that to. Many people buy a $1500 van and live in it for years. Many are on a fixed income such as social security or disability and are trying to survive on $500 a month. The entire idea is to live a frugal lifestyle and have more fun and work less while young. I'd rather have the $30,000 that I'd spend for a new van in the bank for fun travel and just pay cash for a $1500 van. Maybe it would eventually need a new transmission or an engine overhaul soon. Still WAY cheaper than a a newer van. Many have lost their jobs they once had here that are now in other countries, leaving them homeless. I could go on and on but surely you see my point. ✌🏼️

    • @JumpingWatermelons
      @JumpingWatermelons 8 років тому +2

      "Better" is subjective, and different things are better to different people. These old cargo vans are meant to last many, many miles and if you find one in good shape, you can expect it to last for quite a long time. Also, many people who start vandwelling aren't sure how long they will do it for - so they don't necessarily need a brand new van that will last 20 years. Some people also have a preference to use older things rather than just buying new which requires more natural resources, energy, etc. to be used.

    • @enigmaticnomadics
      @enigmaticnomadics  8 років тому +1

      Yea, stringbender. For me, all I could afford was a $2,000 Astro and I took what little I had left over and bought a heater, porty potty and some plywood for cabinets and a bed set-up. Maybe someday I can move up to a class B, but since I'm spoiled with high clearance and AWD, the bar is a little high. It really is all about getting out here in whatever you can and figuring things out from there. ~Jamie

      I think that is one of the biggest challenges people seem to deal with, and biggest questions for newbies..and its different for everybody. I've been a Nomad for almost 14-years now, 11, of which I've been mostly on my own. I've had my lonely times, but the adventure, the anticipation, the challenge, the horizon seems to always take over. Personally, dancing around a camp fire with your favorite music will get me through a lonely, cold, long night night...but these days i have another option...I have found My Tribe, and any time I get lonely, I can find out where they are at, and join them for a while. I didn't have that before, going to the RTR in Q, was one of the most positive things in my life. I love my bungie-cord connections....

    Great video! What a great message. My son, dog and I started out this month, without my husband because he doesn't want to live like this... sigh... BUT.. he is supporting my decision to do this and has even asked a few questions. Right now, we have a makeshift bedframe that holds a bed topper and our sleeping bags, blankets and pillows. There is 12 inches of storage space below the bed. I am wanting to change a couple of things. For example; I want to make the bedframe into a futon frame so the bed can turn into a couch. I also want to make a kitchen that pulls out from below the bed. Gotta figure out my fridge and water situation. As long as I know where to get free water, that will be helpful.
    Anyway, check out our channel. We hope to be in Lake Havasu with you Nov. 1st, Jamie.

    Hey what happened to the interview of Jerry?

    • @enigmaticnomadics
      @enigmaticnomadics  8 років тому +1

      Yes, Brandt. Bob and I have split and I'm afraid he has insisted
      anything with him in them needed to be removed. I am sorry about this and
      will rebuild the channel as close as it was before, without that concern,
      moving forward. ~Jamie

      Hey Jamie understood sometimes things change in the natural change of events that's natural. Will Bob be allowed to take all of his content and putting it up on another channel? I've enjoyed the content and wanted to show my fiance the Jerry interview in particular because she is a creative and i know his setup would fire her up. Hopefully you two can find a way to amicably share all of the content you have made to date, and i look forward to watching both of your content in the future. This was a phenomenal interview btw and very inspiring.

    so, really, u r still working right,I mean how really free r u????u bin on the road a month and a half,you are not even on a good holiday yet,what about maintenance ,gas ,food,etc,and ya its fun initially,but when your savings run out,and u get tired of sneaking round trying to find a place to park,I mean i am just trying to see the WHOLE picture,there r way more things to consider ,other than exploring parks,and not having to punch a clock,or answer to the man,I worked 35 years ,paid my house off in 5 years,have been all over the world,also all over North America by motorcycle ,and still saved enough to retire at 53,now i have a monthly pension for life ,,and enough equity in my house to do whatever it is my heart desires,Its all in the planning and discipline,now thats true freedom

      You sound hostile. Nobody is attacking your method. Ease up. My father had your EXACT plan and was killed at age 53. He never got to see the side your on now. There are no guarantees my friend. By my fathers standards, you got lucky.

    What a horrible van... with the money he had to buy this lifestyle, he could have had a better van and customize it to be more comfortable.
