From the client standpoint, I feel like the reputation and hair history are critical. I had an amazing time when I got my hair cut at the end of September and I made sure to tell my mother and I will ensure I write a phenomenal rave review on Google. I also made sure to tell the hairdresser about the shampoo I mainly used, the fact that I have used plant based hair color, the fact my hair sheds heavily due to a health disorder, and my hair health boosting supplements.
I wish that some (this is definitely a small percentage) clients would understand that it’s better that a hairstylist cares more about the integrity of your hair than getting to silver or platinum in one sitting. Because it’s better to pay for the 3-4 sessions and have healthy hair and it take a little while, than to have your friend do it with box dye and completely fry your hair. The cut and color correction will end up costing more than the original 3-4 sessions. True story by the way, needed to cut off 6 inches of hair.
I been wanting to do my hair but due to the pandemic lay-off I have not set any appointments with my hairstylist because she is pricey but really good at her job and would never ask for discount. I rather save and wait until I can afford to spend. Like you said it is a luxury to get your hair color or cut. I respect prices and her work.
Great tips, thank you! I will say that recently I asked my hairdresser if I could see her on her day off because her and I have the same days off... and she received it well! I asked her in the most polite way possible and acknowledged that I knew this was a HUGE ask that I did NOT expect her to agree to it. But she was happy to do it since she was having a slow week! Plus she does house calls and I offered to come to her instead of her drive to me. I've been going to her for years. I will tip her generously!! I would never ask this of a stylist I just met or only through insta. Thank you for teaching us to be better clients!
Many moons ago I wanted to be a stylist but I chickened out. Hair coloring scared the crap out of me, it was too much chemistry. Esp. today with all these complicated colors like rose gold, mushroom, mocha, rainbow sherbet, ah my anxiety!
This is coming from a Stylist point of view... Please treat our career with respect as you would someone in the medical field, office admin job or even restuarant. The pay and hours of operations are SET for their professions, as it is for us Stylist. I couldn’t imagine asking my dental office to stay open later or discounting my cleaning to accommodate me; it’s selfish and insulting honestly. Treat us with human decency and respect what it is we do, even if you only view it as “an art form”. Sorry Sam I had to let that be publicly known. 😩❤️
I agree with everything you said!! from a client pov: I wish hairdressers were more upfront about pricing and would list their prices. I also don't like when hairdressers double/triple book clients at the same time and gossip. It took me a long time to finally find a good hairdresser who I actually like and go to consistently
I love my hairstylists work but i really can't afford what I want anymore since she raised her prices. So I just asked her what she can do for my price range. Super easy. No need to drag their prices!
Exactly!! I always have that conversation during consultations because I think some people don't realize that. No, we won't just charge less for what you want because you can't afford it right now, but we CAN work with your budget and still give you something beautiful. :)
Clients need to know that celebrities get their hair done all the time by someone. That includes wigs, clip ins, touch ups or whatever it takes to look good. People in real life arent as fortunate, so we have to be realistic with expectations/limitations.
Definitely! I've experienced quite a few people who want the Kim Kardashian treatment, but they don't have the Kim Kardashian bank account to match the demands lol!
I always see a lot of influencers vlogging saying they’re late to an appointment but they continue wasting time vlogging and I always feel so bad for the person that’s waiting on them!! It’s so inconsiderate.
Them sending u a message late at night is one thing but them then adding a question mark cuz u don’t respond LATE AT NIGHT is just so disrespectful in my opinion.
As a client, who rarely gets color done (it has been 2 years) and I go in for a trim and ask questions about how best to take care of my hair, I get blown off. It has happened several times and it makes me feel like since I am not spending $100+ I am not worth the time to have my questions answered. I know that is not every salon, but I am not sure where to look for a stylist who will actually help me. Obviously you do not live in my area and probably don’t know anyone down here (Corpus Christi, TX), I just wanted to give a client grievance that we deal with some times that puts us off.
As a hairstylist myself, I have had a lot of no call/no shows. One, which was big color service, didn't show. I called and made up a lie and didn't "remember" she had an appointment.
Hi! Sam im a new subscriber, been watching your vlogs for couple of month now I love how u explain about hair etc, it makes me learn alot about it, also your so beautiful, your such a nice person and I learn alot from u
Loved this video! Have you ever made a video going over your pricing?? I’m really interested in hearing what you charge for the area you are in. I’m in LV! Booth rent at the salon I’m starting at is pretty pricey. That’s another thing for clients to keep in mind! We spend a lot of money as hairstylists, lash artists etc.. product, booth rent, schooling, continued education & more! So many just think it’s a fun & easy job.. when it’s hard work! Mentally & physically haha
Sara Pesci thank you! You should follow Brit Seva on Instagram if you don’t already. She’s a great resource when it comes to pricing. I’m an employee at my salon, so I don’t set our prices, but they’re based on her formula :)
Sam Vay Awesome!! I’ll totally check her out! Christina Kreitel just posted an live/igtv about her pricing & it was reallllllly helpful! You should check it out!
Hey Sam, I had my hair dyed light brown December of last year and it's looking pretty brassy now. I have not visited the salon yet so the demarcation of my natural and dyed hair is pretty harsh. Any purple shampoo you could recommend so I can tone it down a little bit? Thanks! 💙
I find it so odd that people don't understand that business appointments matter. It's like school, students aren't getting paid to be there but they still have to show up on time.
Where I live, being late is REALLY rude. Not showing up without notifying people? NO-GO. Some people just want to haggle everywhere they go. I was working in a café and people would ask me if they could get stuff cheaper or even for free. Em, no? That would probably lose me my job? I was not the owner, just the waitress, I did not decide on the prices. Love your makeup. It's always just so pretty!
I had the same thing happen & they threatened to lower my tip. So, I told them then so be it! I just work here. They already knew that, because it was at a chain place. I think that is really rude to ask someone to risk their job like that.
Sam can you please do a vid of your favorite hair tools 🙏🏼 blow dryer, straightener, curler etc Help us save money by not buying shitty products pls my blow dryer sucks lol
Yes! I did a video a while back showing what I keep in my station and the tools I use. Not much has changed since. Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/Rm8gSLbWXqs/v-deo.html :)
Just because you dye your hair your natural color it doesn’t mean that your hair is natural or virgin you still have dye in there and a stylist still needs to know that
When I was younger (15-16), I had that mindset 😭 my poor hair dresser... I assumed that since my hair was brown and I dyed it dark brown it didn’t make a difference. OOPS
I have a question,so I got a balayage last year in November it was like warm blonde and natural looking ,my natural hair is brunette, and I just wanted to know when will the balayage go away because I’ve had blonde balayage for like 2 years now and I just want it to go away but I don’t want to dye my hair brown and I just want to let the color grow out,do you have an idea about how long it takes to get out of my hair?
Always try to put yourself in others shoes and try to understand things from their perspective. Communication is so important when it comes to humans interacting with each other. The world doesn't revolve solely around you, your wants and needs. Lol. I'm glad I learned this early on. Weird how some ppl just don't get it.
This question is not related as far as this video.( which I really like and appreciate. ) BUT your hair color is BEAUTIFUL. Is it possible to share your hair? I get you likely don't do it, or do you? If not could you shared the technique AND the colors you used on your hair? That's alot of asking 😬, but it really is perfection. Love you & your work. Thank you!
Thank you! I actually did a tutorial on the placement. Just search “reverse balayage” in my videos. The tone of the lighter pieces is just a result of the faded orange that I had several weeks ago though, so I don’t have an exact formula to share for that unfortunately.
What about tipping? What if you saved $300+ to get our hair done, should you also be prepared to tip the 15 20 25%? Can you give me your opinion on this Sam thank you !
Hey Sam! I love your videos, but I've noticed that some of them in recent times have a bit of an echo when you speak. I don't know about others, but I have a hard time focusing on what you're saying because I get distracted by the echo - a sensory thing, I guess. Did you previously have an attached mic? Or is it possible it just echoes more in your new place? I want to keep watching your videos, and thought I'd make a request for an adjustment to audio. I enjoy your content and watch every single one!

Hair grows about 1/4” to 1/2” per month. So it depends how short you’re willing to cut it to cut off all of the balayage.
