  • Nasty surprise bleeding rear brakes. Always keep topping it off because there are two compartments not just one big one.

    Thank god for you and this video, I sat and pumped my brakes for an hour after a rebuild on the rear brakes and new pads on my w123, and nothing happened. I had my reservoir filled above 90 percent and nothing was happening. I watched this and topped off my reservoir and within 6 pumps I had pressure. I did not see one single person bother to mention this anywhere, you made my week, thank you so much.

    When i came across your video i thot all reservoirs were the same. And so i worked on changing the master cyl of my 87 260E and i was so disappointed cause i thot the master (ate) cyl i got was deffective so i had to remove it again and started to bleed it on a vice. So what happened is that i held up the reservoir separate from the metal cylinder and pour fluid in it only to find no fluid is coming out of the front hole... Damn !! I had to fill the reservoir past the max mark so that the fluid will transfer to the other compartment of the reservoir... And that solved it. Thanks for the tip and there should be an instruction included every master cylinder part that will be sold. !! It is so critical !!! Good day to you !!

    Thank you so much for sharing this important info. It also works on Mercedes 190 ( W201 ). I removed the brake fluid reservoir to clean it and change the fluid and i couldnt bleed the rear brakes ( fluid wouldnt come out of the nipple). I started to remove the rear brake lines trying to find some brake line clogged. As i couldnt find, came to UA-cam and find your video. It would have save me a couple of hours and a rounded nut.

    yes great advise, i notice my break fluid was really dark. so i evacuated the reservoir and notice the rear of the reservoir was still full. i believe the previous owner never flushed the brake system.

    • @straybenzes
      @straybenzes  3 роки тому

      Replacing the fluid does not necessarily get all of the old stuff out of the system. The ABS pump system alone takes a bit of fluid and even small amounts of dark particulate will discolor new fluid almost immediately. All the best!

    Don’t know about the w126, but on w124 and w201 the rear compartment is also feeding the clutch cylinders. So if one of them is bad and leaking it can also be the reason for the empty reservoir compartment.

    Oh man I just learned this the hard way. Just spent an extra hour bleeding my brakes on my 82 SD. My reservoir looks a little different. Rear reservoir is at the front but I drained it nonetheless. I almost had to overfill it to get the fluid to clear the internal wall. Good to know.

    • @straybenzes

    • @pacodrake3766

      It’s kinda my fault. I changed my master cylinder four years ago and I couldn’t get the two nipples on the reservoir all the way down into the new master cylinder. I was afraid I’d break off the plastic nipples if I forced it too hard. So my reservoir is tilted back just a bit because the front tube didn’t go down as much as the back tube. That made it almost impossible to fill the front reservoir because the fluid level almost needed to be overflowing to clear the little wall inside. I figured it out by shining a bright flashlight through the reservoir. The warning light also went on as the level switch tripped. I’ve never been able to get my pedal this firm for the last four years. Really happy now.

    • @straybenzes
      @straybenzes  Рік тому +1

      Well, this may be a simple issue. Have you popped off the mounting screw cover off the wiper that has stopped working? I have seen the little M8 nuts turn loose and the wiper shaft started spinning in the wiper mount. Check that out first. The linkages seldomly fail.

    • @straybenzes
      @straybenzes  4 роки тому +1

      Sure. Did you fill the reservoir all the way to the top? Only when the main chamber is full will more fluid flow into the other chamber as well. I found another helpful W124 brake bleeding video here: ua-cam.com/video/UsDdVLe9LgU/v-deo.html

    Sadly i found your video too late . i just changed my fluid but i was unable to get any fluid just air in the rear brakes and after alot of searching i found that the problem is the fluid reservoir has 2 compartment even it showed that the reservoir is full, the back compartment is empty. unfortunately after alot of brake pedal pumping, i ruined the master cylinder

      @@straybenzes The 1996 Corolla I'm currently using has it, can even see the little thin dividing wall, and most other cars I've done the brakes on too, The 1960s HD Holden i did a fortnight ago had just a single one.
      Its called a tandem master cylinder, it can use either two separate resevoirs or just one with a dividing wall.
      I think pretty much every car made after the 1970s has it as standard, its main purpose is to allow either the front or rear brakes to still work in the event of a leak at either end.

    • @brandonk1502
      @brandonk1502 2 роки тому

      This is pretty extreme on the Mercedes though, it has to be filled over 95 percent of the way for the fluid to make its way to the rear. I would have never guessed it was that extreme until I saw this video.
