The Kinks were an English rock band formed in London in 1963 by brothers Ray and Dave Davies. They are regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of the 1960s. The Kinks' music drew from a wide range of influences, including American R&B and rock and roll initially and later adopting British music hall, folk, and country. The band gained a reputation for reflecting English culture and lifestyle, fuelled by Ray Davies' wittily observational writing style. The Kinks and the songs of Ray Davies are now rightfully established as a great British institution. From the opening riff of You Really Got Me, The Kinks’ influence as pioneers in heavy metal, power pop, conceptual albums, and theatrical shows can be detected in much modern music.
This, and much more, can be seen on this UA-cam channel exclusively devoted to these true British originals.

Underrated song by the kinks....old London life❤❤❤❤
I think that this band was, lyrically and musically, moving in a different direction than other bands of the British Invasion. This song is about the reality that some people live with, back then and today as well.
One of the best outros ever.
One of my favorits songs from Kinks
Classic!
Yes yes yes wanna cry...my girl makes me cry❤❤❤
There's a crack up in the ceiling
And the kitchen sink is leaking
Out of work and got no money
A Sunday joint of bread and honey
What are we living for?
Two-roomed apartment on the second floor
No money coming in
The rent collector's knocking, tryna get in
We are strictly second class
We don't understand
Why we should be on dead end street
(Dead end!) People are living on dead end street
(Dead end!) I'm gonna die on dead end street
Dead end street (yeah!)
Dead end street (yeah!)
On a cold and frosty morning
Wipe my eyes and stop me yawning
And my feet are nearly frozen
Boil the tea and put some toast on
What are we living for?
Two-roomed apartment on the second floor
No chance to emigrate
I'm deep in debt and now it's much too late
We both want to work so hard
We can't get the chance
People live on dead end street
(Dead end!) People are dying on dead end street
(Dead end!) I'm gonna die on dead end street
Dead end street (yeah!)
Dead end street (yeah!)
People live on dead end street
(Dead end!) People are dying on dead end street
(Dead end!) I'm gonna die on dead end street
Dead end street (yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)
Head to my feet (yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)
How's it feel? (Yeah)
How's it feel? (Yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah

The more things change the more they stay the same. A song about poverty and despair. I think the UK is still going through tough times especially these days. Some doctor coined the expression 'SLS - Shit Life Syndrome' as a medical condition.
Kinks are almost totally dispassionate in the expression of contemporary music. They just did it. Ray has a wonderful repertoire of lyrics and melodies that are so intertwined that it is seamless in its construction. They are counter-revolutionaries even if it doesn't seem like that on the surface. Maybe that is the real reason they didn't make it into the USA at the time of the British Invasion.
Who is playing bass on this? John or Pete? Or is it Dave?....
John played bass. This song was recorded in October 1966.
Pete came back in the same year, in November 1966, just when this single was released and John left the band to come back in 1969 again replacing Pete.
I loved this when it was released, such a clever song, both musically and lyrically. Still love it! 💯🎶🎵
