Tough decision. Whiplash clearly was more in control during this fight, but also clearly took more damage. I can understand the split decisions, and while Whiplash surely deserved the win, I would have given it to Monsoon for causing more damage
You don't get full damage points without shutting down a weapon. If they'd pushed and made sure of the weapon, the fight would have been theirs-it would have given them aggression and damage points. As it was, when they should have been dominating because Whiplash had no damage output-Monsoon held back.
I honestly thought this was a win for monsoon. Whiplash did little to no damage, but monsoon just tore apart the front side of whiplash. Whiplash didn’t even have a working weapon for half the fight. (Edit: I do understand whiplash had more control, but it was mainly during the beginning. Monsoons powerful weapon did have some say in the control as well. It was a really close fight though. Whiplash is hard to outdrive.)
@@sonny19931 Deciding to turn your weapon off should cost a team their aggression points. Losing the aggression category alongside damage (since half of Whiplash's drivetrain was disabled) should've made this Monsoon's victory.
Damage: 3-2 or 4-1 for Monsoon - Whiplash had a functional weapon, but reduced effectiveness on its defense (forks) and drive. Monsoon looked like it had some drive trouble towards the end, but it's hard to tell. Aggression: 2-1 Monsoon - Both bots attempted a lot of attacks, but Whiplash hardly ever used its primary weapon. Control: Easy 0-3 for Whiplash - it consistently controlled the fight and could maneuver around Monsoon's blade. Add it up and it's either a 5-6 or a 6-5, depending on how badly damaged Monsoon was at the end, so yeah, split decision sounds right.
There's no way Damage is as close at 3-2 Monsoon I think was only struggling due to gyro. Idk why people think Monsoon won aggression Whiplash initiated almost every attack
@@nametab6415 Some people are forgetting, that lifter is also a weapon and therefore consider no action on spinner as "no use of primary weapon". But the main weapon (excluding driving) is lifter, and lifter was used.
It actually became a unanimous decision afterwards, still in favour of Whiplash as the Monsoon team appealed the decision, which was of course unsuccessful
I feel like whiplash definentally deserves way more in the aggression category because the lifter is its primary weapon, and also, the boldness (charging monsoon even with a high risk of getting damaged) factors heavily into the aggression category
I think this was some smart play from Whiplash. They were going to win the control fight every time, they realize that their weapon just wasn’t going to land the big hits it needs, so by turning it off for a while they can give a bit of a fake out to Monsoon, and by turning back on can make it clear ‘Nope, not broken, just lazy”.
I honestly think that they should remove the spinner entirely. That way Matt Vazquez can show how much a robot with a low ground game, and one of the best drivers in modern battlebots can go.
@@tamarahamaker7734 I feel like it's best with the spinner .. Without it it just cannot deal any damage whatsoever and winning just by control over damage is against you in the JD .. also Whiplash performs better with the spinner overall despite not being that powerful
I think it was the correct call. Monsoon definitely wins damage but whiplash easily had much more control of the fight and IMO was the more aggressive bot as well
The judging guide however tells that Aggression is defined by weapon use. Whiplash turned off one of their weapons, and never did much with their other one. Thus by definition, Monsoon wins 2-1 on Aggression.
@@Retrosicotte the flipper is the primary, they turned the secundary off to gain more control and capaitlised on that, just having a big weapon and having your opponent run into it as your oppenent takes the more aggresive stance isn't enough to get winning points, it's literally selfinflicted damage
My scorecard for the match, in my opinion: Damage: 3-2 in favour of monsoon, they did the greater amount of damage yes, but even losing a side of drive didn't have too great of an impact on Whiplash's maneuvourability. Aggression 1-2 in favour of Whiplash, the majority of engagement was them initiating and therefore being aggressive. The lifter is far more the primary weapon, and Whiplash continued to attempt to make use of it in the fight. Control: 0-3 in favour of Whiplash, they were all over Monsoon and pretty much dictated where the fight was, consistantly using the short corners to cut down the options for maneuvours by Monsoon, and trying to stay to the sides of the weapon. Whiplash also got under Monsoon many many times, Monsoon literally *could not do anything else but face their spinners towards Whiplash.* Monsoon definitely won on damage. We never got to see the close up shots of damage to Monsoon's underbelly either either. Whiplash *bullied* Monsoon throughout, it dodged a few hits but never ran away. You're *bound to get hit* when you have to be aggressive against a big reach spinner like Monsoon. *Whiplash has lost a side drive and is still dominating Monsoon.* Ps. Whiplash's primary weapon is the lifter and it has gotten lifts. Whiplash has also used its spinner to some extent.
3-2 in favour of Monsoon for damage, 1-2 in favour of Whiplash for control, so it would have come down to aggression and I think 1-2 in favour of Whiplash would be the right call there, so I'm with the judges on this. Tough call though.
@@Frosty_tha_Snowman It is a matter of which is more aggressive, the judges have to distribute 3 points between the two bots for aggression so if it is close it will be 2-1 either way, and if a bot is clearly more aggressive then it will be 3-0 to the aggressive bot. @@Retrosicotte Nah both bots clearly had drive and weapon issues at the end of the fight so they would have been pretty even on damage there, so it was only really some non-critical armour on whiplash that was the difference so I'd definitely go with 3-2 in favour of Monsoon. The difference in damage between them wasn't worthy of a 4-1, Monsoon would have needed to be in better shape to justify a 4-1. Maybe if the weapon was able to get up to speed or if they still had full mobility I'd agree with a 4-1, but they were in pretty rough shape just like whiplash, but whiplash also have that top plate ripped up a bit. A 4-1 would also have been justified if they had completely disabled the weapon on Whiplash, but it was still somewhat working so a 3-2 is definitely more fitting.
Though it did more damage than Whiplash, the damage Monsoon did was mostly superficial and did not actually affect Whiplash's ability to control the fight, which it did, and proved to be the more aggressive of the two. With that said, I think the judges (except Lisa, of course) did a good job of scoring the fight.
@@Xarosai That isn't how it works, otherwise there would be no control bots (lifters, flippers etc.) without a damaging weapon in the competition. Last year Whiplash proved that it could make it to the Round of 16 without using their disc at all, just the lifting arm.
Watching the fight, it is a Whiplash win. Whenever they traded blows, whiplash determined where they went and how long they fought. Even without their spinner they were pushing Monsoon into the hazards around the ring and avoiding any really big hits. Monsoon was able to get some good damage, but the way whiplash is built prevents it from being easily taken out with only back hits being a good way to get damage that would disable the mobility and cause a countdown. In the end, Whiplash just had the better maneuverability and power to keep the fight under control while monsoon was getting partially tipped with every collision so they couldn't bring their full power to the fight.

Each point is worth as much as the others. Damage is more valuable because there are more Damage points up for grabs (5) than for Aggression and Control (3 each). You need six total points to win a judge's scoring. Whiplash got at least 2 points each on Aggression and Control, so only needed 2 more points. Monsoon did take damage (drive train trouble at minimum), so that's at least one more point. Whiplash only needed one more point to win a judge's card, and two judges felt they earned that point.
Definitely a unanimous Whiplash decision with the judging matrix system we have. In previous seasons it would have gone to Monsoon solely on damage and weapon usage.
the judges got it right imo Shure whiplash didn't do much damage but it dominated the fight even with 1/2 drive, and monsoon wisent able to much damage that effected whiplashes ability to function as intended
Think it came down to how the damage points and aggression were distributed. Whiplash could've been awarded more aggression points than Monsoon so they could've won 6-5 on the cards
I kind of agree with the decision. Monsoon did more damage, but had basically zero aggression. The only time their weapon made contact with Whiplash was incidental contact while Whiplash was attacking.
Per the judges own guide on the Battlebots website, Monsoon won. They got it utterly wrong here. Using the official Judges guide's definitions it is: Damage: 4-1 to Monsoon Aggression: 2-1 to Monsoon (potential 1-2 to Whiplash) Control: 2-1 to Whiplash. Whichever way Aggression goes, Monsoon still wins.
I don't really think its hard to see how control could go 3-0 to whiplash and result in a 6-5 for whiplash here. Monsoon really doesn't control the fight in any way - everything happens on Whiplash's terms
@@mikejunt per the actual guide, control being 3-0 defines a match where the 0 bot has basically no control over their own bot's purposes at all, which one cannot say was the case.

Whiplash without a doubt
Fight start @7.30
Each point is worth as much as the others. Damage is more valuable because there are more Damage points up for grabs (5) than for Aggression and Control (3 each). You need six total points to win a judge's scoring. Whiplash got at least 2 points each on Aggression and Control, so only needed 2 more points. Monsoon did take damage (drive train trouble at minimum), so that's at least one more point.
Whiplash only needed one more point to win a judge's card, and two judges felt they earned that point.
What the result??
Originally it was Whiplash via split decision. Monsoon appealed and the result was changed into a unanimous decision for Whiplash
In BattleBots 2022
And it will come like a flood of pain
In Toy Story 3 2010
It was Monsoon until Whiplash's weapon spun again.
Wiplash honestly should not exist. It’s a failure of the rules that bots like it that cause zero damage exist
Definitely a unanimous Whiplash decision with the judging matrix system we have. In previous seasons it would have gone to Monsoon solely on damage and weapon usage.
the judges got it right imo
Shure whiplash didn't do much damage but it dominated the fight even with 1/2 drive, and monsoon wisent able to much damage that effected whiplashes ability to function as intended
Oof tough one but I think the judges got it wrong, damage was definitely with Monsoon here. This stinks of, we don't want Whiplash going home.
No no no no no. Monsoon by a point.
Monsoon win
Feel like it was pretty obviously Whiplash, and seems like the judges (who ruled even harder in its favour after the appeal) agreed.
Monsoon wasn't aggressive and didn't control Whiplash at all that fight. So yeah, judges got that right
Think it came down to how the damage points and aggression were distributed. Whiplash could've been awarded more aggression points than Monsoon so they could've won 6-5 on the cards
A weird choice to include the MadCatter mid commercial segment here.
I kind of agree with the decision. Monsoon did more damage, but had basically zero aggression. The only time their weapon made contact with Whiplash was incidental contact while Whiplash was attacking.
The way I see it .. Monsoon should be the winner
Per the judges own guide on the Battlebots website, Monsoon won. They got it utterly wrong here. Using the official Judges guide's definitions it is:
Damage: 4-1 to Monsoon
Aggression: 2-1 to Monsoon (potential 1-2 to Whiplash)
Control: 2-1 to Whiplash.
I wonder, if Whiplash was found to have deliberately shut down their weapon to prevent it getting broken / damaged, would the judges deduct points from their aggression score?
I would personally go for monsoon just because the way I look at things actual damage should outweigh control
Monsoon's forks seemed to get in the way to me. Next time try without them at least on one side (up/down).
Whiplash flips over too easily, and can't take advantage of its heavy weapon because of it. It needs some sort of reversible wheelie bar to keep it from flipping so easily
Great battle, very close and the judges got it right. I really like design on monsoon
The fight starts at 7.30.
