Sandberg California Series VM4 - Review & Demo

As their name might suggest, the California series, pays homages to a couple of iconic Fender basses and the VM4, Sandberg’s answer to the Precision bass. The body is made from either Alder or Ash, depending on the finish, this particular model is made from Ash, and this one’s finished in a lovely matt blueburst which really emphasises the grain of the wood. It’s been topped off with a pearloid scratchplate, but there’s a huge range of other customisable options for colours and finishes, either matt, gloss or aged, and you can also choose from a number of pick guard options. Although it is a similar shape to a Fender P-Bass, the body does feel a little lighter and more ergonomically contoured, so it’s really comfortable to play both sitting down or standing up for long periods of time.
Fitted to the body is a 6 bolt neck made from Canadian Hardrock Maple. It’s got a beautiful smooth satin finish which feels lovely to play, with a familiar, comfortable profile that any P-Bass fan will instantly feel at home with. Now the neck on the guitar we’re looking at today has been fitted with a Rosewood Fingerboard with Abalone Dots and an unfinished headstock, but just like with the finish, there’s a number of options for fingerboard woods, such as maple, pau ferro or ebony, you get the choice of with or without inlays, and you can also choose if you want the headstock finish to match the body.
That headstock houses a set of high quality Sandberg open gear tuners, a string retainer, access to the 2 way truss rod, and a zero fret nut, and down at the other end of it’s 34” scale length is a 4 saddle, fully adjustable bridge making it easy to adjust intonation and action. Again, this guitar’s fitted with chrome hardware, but there are also options of either black or gold.
The VM4's pickup configuration is also a little different to a traditional P-Bass, with a beefy sounding Sandberg Powerhumbucker at the bridge, accompanying the more familiar split style single coil. Both pickups house larger than usual poles, to capture more of those string vibrations, and the addition of the humbucker offers a tonal option more akin to a music man stingray. There’s controls for volume and balance, so you can run each pickup either individually or blend them both together, there’s treble and bass controls and you can also set the pre-amp to either active or passive by using the push-pull volume knob, with the active circuit allowing you to boost treble and bass frequencies.
