    Hi Tom.
Ive played since 1987. One month i revised my picking technique. Now use side of index finger and thumbtip picking hand in c shape. Previously i was using index tip and thumb tip.
Two days ago i examined my alternate picking. Going from lower strings to high three note per string i would start on a downstroke and use down up down, directional picking. Going from high to low strings descending i would go down up down, up down up.
I never had examined this closely as the picking patterns affect how i feel.
I read last night that mike phillipov advised directional picking. Now this morning i tried starting with an upstroke going from higher to lower strings descending while retaining down up down with lower to higher strings. Mikes way is logical as my hand doesnt want to leap over a string but would rather use a partial sweep on scales.
Ive also found using a 0.88 to 1 mm is best as this allows my fretting hand to keep up.
I play left and right handed guitars.
I will be using mikes logical approach. thx.

In the eighties it was all open loops. REH videos, Guitar World, no real technical info of how to hold the pick how to pick, what to do. Massively frustrating to students.
One month ago i listen to Theo Ziras on how to pick, issue solved. Took about ten minutes to fix.
Ive had numerous teachers that i paid. Not one ever corrected how i held the pick, talked about pick width, how to alternate vs directional picking.
Teachers need to be careful to engage their students otherwise those students will go elsewhere.
