This is part of the only existing video recording of Renée Fleming in Susannah (also featuring Samuel Ramey). Both were exceptional in this production. It's even possible to say that these performances will remain in the history of Opera. Both Americans both legendary artists and both at the peak of their careers.
This document is part of a large project aimed to make available to a large audience for the first time many precious testimonies of great opera singers in memorable performances recorded live in the 90's and early 2000"s. This project has been made possible thanks to the support and generosity of a group of friends devoted to opera. A special mention here for Julia, a most devoted fan of Renée, whose dedication and generosity was instrumental to make this project possible.

Glad to know that this production got preserved. I recorded the radio broadcast but was surprised that this didn't receive an HD telecast. "Susannah" is, after all, one of the most popular post-war American operas. You are probably aware that there was a later San Francisco telecast with Patricia Racette. Thanks for posting the first clip I would have asked for from this performance.

What a unique document. She was incandescent in this run. The only singer in the piece's history who could give full thrift to both the soaring highs, and the very aggressive chest voice the piece needs. Thank you so much for sharing.
Can you post the bits in act 2 bit with with Ramey?: "That's mighty pretty singin Susannah" that comes after her beautiful act 2 aria "The Trees and the mountains", and also the finale of the opera?
