HE IS AND ALWAYS WAS A CHAMPION
It was harder for Violet to do that than we think. She probably thought that she, in fact, did have the best blooms in the village and won on merit alone, and throughout the episode came to realize she was just given it. It was a blow to her pride not for something she knowingly did, but for something that was unknowingly done for her. I feel sorry for her, but I know she gave away the cup knowing it was the right thing to do, which is what I love about her. She's never above doing what's right, even at personal loss, something she will rarely admit it.
Kachiry...Violet was above as the leader of her county but she lived in a very different era and she really thought she should win at everything. Thankfully, Isobel came into their lives and awakened the Dowager to the new realities - I said this before, she was Violet's conscience.
Yeah. Eating each other’s lunch is more like it. But you know Penelope Wilton has be one heck of a actress to hold her with Dame Maggie Smith. Penelope has more long-sustained dialog with Maggie that any other character.
I like how Isobel is such a deep influence on Violet ,its as if she learns to appreciate things better with Isobel around and Isobel gets a good competition for her ideas in violet ,they suit each other 😁
Sidharth...having an almost major (college) in English, Isobel is really Violet's conscience - always reminding Violet of the truth that is not so visible for the Dowager! They balance each other.

I must say the costumes were beautiful in the first season! Those hats! Not as a critique to the designers of the later seasons, I just prefer the pre-war fashion
However, I think Mary had a point when criticising Edith's outfit. I've nothing against her, but that dress was absolutely hideous. It made her look too plain and frumpy. I'll agree that everyone else's outfits were beautiful.

Edith's appears to be some sort of muslin, which doesn't give her much shape, and the only styling it's been given is the belt, which is too wide and draws attention to her stomach. All together, Mary's dress is flattering, pretty and well put together. Edith looks like a meringue.
Always delightful to watch Mrs Crawley’s expressions. So sincere & warming. She’s undoubtedly influenced the Dowager to be more empathetic to the others. Not that the Dowager is bad, but she can be so hard on everyone. She’s definitely softened over the years in the series. I can’t wait for the upcoming A New Era movie!
My eyes were riveted on every flower and vegetable on the tables and window sills and shelves. The set decorator and designer need awards not only for this scene but everything single scene in all 6 seasons of DA. Superb detail and colour combination and coordination!
That's the thing about dowager she might acts like a snob but she really isn't one. Because of sheltered privileged life she never been able to understand how the world actually works for those who are not privileged like her but luckily she found a friend like Isabel who widened the horizon of thinking. The best part of her character is that she always ready to change herself with changing times while retaining her unique style and demeanor.

The S1 costumes were superb, because they're still in the Edwardian Period and it's very charming and magical to us because it was such a different tines, compared to later seasons where they're in the 20's and they wear something more familiar to us.
The outfits/walking coats of Lady Grantham, Violet and Isobel are beyond beautiful, outstanding and gorgeous!!!! I miss the days when people dressed up to go out, if at least to special events.

I love Maggie Smith ... but I also love Penelope Wilton equally as much. When I gave up on American television about ten years ago, Downton was there ... I am so grateful for the show because I have developed a love for all of the actors. The only thing I watch now is PBS, and that is only occasionally. Penelope is such a great actor and she has such a tremendous personality.

And add to that that your slutty immature bully of an older sister still is loved by everybody, while you can drop off the face of the Earth and nobody will miss you... That is the truth of what Edith went through even years after she had become an adult and Sybil's death should have made her parents appreciate their remaining daughter more. And she also was put through things like being jilted at the altar by an older man and being an unwed mother after her lover was murdered in Germany. It is like the universe hated Edith as much you do...

Also, let's not forget she was so desperate for a man, when she drove the tractor for the farmer, she also flirted with him and kissed him. She would have had an affair with him if his wife had not intervened. Also, there are scenes such as when Carson became ill near the dinner table and something landed on her dress, when she was asked to fetch the doctor, her only concern was for her dress being soiled. There are also many other times when she was "not so sweet", but I digress. PEACE.

Whilst I love Downton Abby to bits and have watched it 3 times, this scene always bothers me. The entire storyline was stolen from Mrs. Miniver.
