I've mentioned before that I grew up in East Devon and used to visit Lyme Regis a lot. My eldest brother used to love taking a day to walk from Lyme to Charmouth to look for fossils. He was very aware of the tide times and carried a little alarm clock so he turned back at the right time and never had to be rescued! He found a lot of small ammonites and belemnites, plus a pocket full of iron pyrites. He gave us the less perfect examples but carefully logged and kept the best. So many memories evoked by your beach walks! Thank you x
Yeah, having moved here from Hampshire, there's a whole different angle to tide observations. I always used to keep an eye on the tide before, because on the beaches of the solent, high tide just means not much beach to explore. Down here in Dorset, being on the beach when the tide is rising there's a significant risk of getting dangerously cut off.
I always start my walks at high tide, means you have at least 12 hours 👍🏾

A crinoid is ribbed and usually has a star shape or lines outward on its thin section. I think that's a different species of belemnite from the others you found. The bone-like fragment looks like the "beef" stone that is commonly found around there. Fingers crossed for ichtyosaur bone though!

That piece of white pottery with the hole in it is the top of an inkwell from the old fashioned school desks. There were probably millions of those in landfills all over the UK, and the British Empire.
I'm always so impressed with your ability to find similar pieces of glass work/pottery to overlay your finds onto, it's an excellent visual and I have no idea how you manage it. Looked like a lovely day out, nothing like rainy day soup or stew. :)
That sort of weather, at the seaside, is my ideal kind. Roaring sea and offshore wind, making it deliciously bracing - not cold, but bracing, which feels good, especially if you are wearing the right sort of clothing. That, coincidentally, seems to be something older people do (I'm 60, so I guess that makes me 'older') - but I often see younger people, soaked to the skin, and obviously freezing cold in what are probably very expensive fashionable coats. I wear a lot of cheap military surplus clothing, and always gloves, and a hat of some kind, and I'm warm and dry. Function over Form, every time, for me. A walk like that is always best, if a good café or pub is at the end of it, I find.

My local beach (Tangitu Bay, Northland NZ) in NZ has had some blue pottery shards and a clay pipe stem….its about 3 km from Marsden Cross- the site of the first European settlement in NZ….Rev. Samuel Marsden.

I enjoy the “searching for things” (like sea glass, berries, or pottery) videos a lot, especially with Jenny along. I live in a city along the Missouri River, which is probably a good spot to have similar outings, but we haven’t had _consistently_ nice weather yet. Yesterday it snowed and last week 50-60 degrees (f) out. I’m not at all built for being out in cold or damp weather long (much like Eva). So, I appreciate being able to live vicariously through you for a bit! Thank you for sharing your work and time with us, as always :)
Maybe it's my Scottish blood, but that looks AMAZING, the bluster, the damp, and slight wisps of fog, just beautiful. I'd be happy just by myself roaming that beach, but the fact that you have Jenny sharing the day with you is the greatest gift of all, everything is better with a staunch companion by your side and Jenny is a gem.

I love that kind of weather, where its still bright enough to see where you're going but the surf blows in your face, a pleasant feeling when you're wrapped up warm with just your face exposed to the elements. The air is full of negative ions, so refreshing.
It's disturbing that people would find blustery weather "amazing." 🫨
That being said, I have a bit of Scottish blood in me (no, I didn't say a bit of Scotch in my blood), so, I can appreciate a blustery day as viewed from inside a nice, warm house. 😉
There is something different about being outside in this weather - on a lovely sunny day, you notice the beauty of nature; but on a day like this (or worse) you start to notice the power of nature, and how it's utterly indifferent to your comfort - and that's an interesting experience
So nice of Jenny to bring you along while she finds all these treasures :)
I live by the rugged S Wales Coast of Gower, and walking along the beaches on a day like that is really enjoyable and invigorating, especially when retreating afterwards to a warm coffee shop for a cuppa and slice of cake, and watching the sea crash and foam on the rocks.
Wonderful really. Nothing better than a gray windy day.
Something i think would be fascinating is once you have a collection of pottery shards big enough, attempting to rebuild a usable, if ornamental piece of complete pottery, perhaps with something similar to japanese kintsugi, it would be a LOT of work, but ive never seen a piece like that before (and i have looked) and i think it would be an interesting challenge to find pieces of similar curves to form a basic bowl

I love these videos. I have family in Dorset and I remember as a child I would go down there to visit every summer. It was the best times of my life and I spent a lot of times at many of the beaches and other places you have visited in your videos. I wonder, have you been to Poole as of late? I remember going there frequently many years ago and enjoying Poole pottery If that is still a thing. Making and painting your own pots was a cool way to spend a day. Anyway great videos and a big nostalgia hit for this guy !
I believe I might very well have hoiked the stone you found at 8:10 off the beach, or at least one very similar. It was my first time fossil hunting at Charmouth and got carried away 😂

Have you ever thought about going down the beach after dark with a UV lamp to see what you can find?
I did. Found some orange flourescing stone Local-ish to you, but no one can tell me what it is.

I like the pyrite nodules! In California, I've only seen pyrite as a slightly brassy colored glitter, sparkling in sand. It's often called "fool's gold." Inexperienced miners during the California gold rush would get excited when they first saw it in their gold pans. The nodules are very cool! I wonder what they look like inside.
Yes, I had a small bottle full of Iron pyrite when I was a teen. Lost in the house somewhere now 😂

Thank you for the most lovely day at the beach! So appreciated! It reminds me of the beaches here in Oregon. It’s mostly blustery, cold, & rainy. It’s invigorating to get outside on the beach in that type of weather. Collecting rocks & pottery makes it even better!

I found an amazing peice of fossil wood at Charmouth. I was even brwn coloured with lines in it. Only the third stone I broke open.

I was wondering if there was any use in trying to industrially recycle seaglass. It seems there is so much of it that hoarding it for its aesthetic value might be a bit much at some point
The sea glass would look fab stuck on a plain picture, mirror or photo frame, especially the green kind.
I used to love walking the beach in California on cold,gray winter days(yes,they have winter there).The beach would be empty of people and the Pacific would be showing it's restless beauty.The commonest glass there was the green and clear mostly from sodas and lots and lots of amber glass from beer bottles.Rocks had alot of colors including alot with speckles.I think reddish rocks were more common than in your haul,probably because Southern California is basically the Mojave Desert being uplifted then falling into the sea from erosion and earthquakes.Away from the sea and not up in the Sierras, SoCal looks alot like the Mojave.

the piece you're holding at 14:42 actually IS a piece of belemnite, it's just the base of it without the tip.
Crinoids at Lyme and Charmouth are always star-shaped and have little lines on its surface denoting each segment.
At 16:27 you're holding a piece of the beef member. It's either that or a piece of rib.
I usually watch these videos on one of my laptops or my mobile so I wasn't really aware of the very good quality. Seeing this on my main computer on a big screen made me realise how good the resolution is. Good job. Maybe Mr Shrimp changed equipement in the meantime and I just haven't noticed because it's been a long long while since I watched youtube on the big screen.👍👍

Charmouth is my favourite beach in the UK. We have found a huge number of amazing fossils. There was a Victorian dump in the area so there is a lot to find. We travel there at least 3 or 4 times per year from the Midlands
Stormy weather is yummy to be in, especially on a beach like this.

'Fool's gold' perhaps in itself, but remember that gold rides an iron horse.
The pottery at about 24:30 I think was an old ceramic water bottle filler spout. You would have a cork that would stopper it.

Mudlarking on the Thames foreshore in London is popular with a lot of people. Myself, I'd love to try magnet fishing in rivers or canals just to see what I can find 😂
@@no-oneinparticular7264 need a license for that and the thames foreshore stinks its full of rubbish and that liver disease spread by rats vials or wials or something I can't remember.

Awesome jackets those eh, got the same one I believe, in black with the removable inner fleece, recommend their touchscreen gloves or if your into it get a rucksack, shoes and the t-shirt like me, not sure why the t-shirt but I like it 😄
Mike, several times in this video when you were commenting on an apparent lack of fossils I noticed that by your feet there were mainly large rocks with visible fossil oyster shells in advanced stages of erosion in sight, including at least one example that was possibly small enough to collect for extraction. It maybe that you were discounting this type of fossil due to the obvious damaged condition of the available samples or because you already have examples of the same type in your collection but as a now land locked lubber I normally only notice this type on occasions when I have been out caving in my native Yorkshire.
More likely I just didn't notice them - the camera isn't always representing where my eyes are pointing (and also I was sort of tuned in to the idea of finding ammonites and belmnites)
Watch out for the Devils Toenails.

I prefer to walk the other direction where the clays are more exposed! Though heading to Lyme Regis the rock pool bit halfway between is particularly good for those pyrite ammonites 💪🏻

I hope Jenny is wearing heavy boots as she may get blown away , she seems such a tiny thing.
I actually think Jenny is likely just normal size, but we are so used to seeing much bigger people now that she comes across as small. It will only get worse with the obesity crisis here in the UK....closely following in the USA's footsteps.

You are right about wearing proper clothing. I lived in England in the 80s. I bought a Mac and an umbrella, life was great.

Do you ever go to sandy beaches and find anything? I'm in North Wales and only ever found 2 pieces of clear sea glass lol No fossils or anything like that, just beach pebbles washed up in the tide.
The long stretches of white sand where I live are nice, but there's not much to find.
I don't often go to sandy beaches, for that general reason
i thought belemnite was some kind of urchin like crature until i googled it, surprised they were proto squids and the tooth like bone was the internal "spine"

Pieces of broken glass (usually discarded bottles) that have been worn smooth by tumbling in the surf with rocks and sand

that piece of round pottery could be the top of an ink well
It seems a bit fine for that, but maybe it was a really posh one. There is a sort of 'funnel' shape around the hole so that does suggest this could have been for filling a vessel such as an inkwell or salt shaker.

Yes, it is mudlarking. A lot of people do it at the seashore and on the Thames foreshore in London.
I'd say this is on the border between mudlarking and beachcombing - mudlarking does often involve actual mud

How do you know when the tide will come back? I would be scared that I would drown.
Tides are very predictable as they are governed largely by the gravitational influences of the sun and moon. I have an app that gives me reliable tide predictions for any selected area
