Ben Caplan and the Casual Smokers perform "Down to the River" live in CBC's in Studio Q with Jian Ghomeshi. Kaplan is amazing. I own no rights to this music or performance, etc. etc.
I first heard this song when my dad was in the middle of ALS destroying him. He was always a "it aint over until its over" kind of guy, this song really hit me hard and even years after losing him, i come back to hear the wise words "there is no such thing as a dying man we're alive til the moment we are dead, a drowning man is just a living man who hasnt run out of his last bit of breath" and it somehow makes me feel like he was okay with it finally being over. He was a tough guy, but he never shied away from showing his kids love and support even when he was the one who needed it most. Im rambling but, I guess i just had to vent these feelings out somewhere. I love you dad
I love this song. My life is crazy and I been in a bit of a slump and it’s just been there to tell me everything will be okay just fight through the bull Shit and get to to other side. You don’t give up till your dead. Thanks for posting this for us. To listen to
It's so random, too... It was up until a couple months ago. I don't understand going back and taking down a video from 5 years ago, but leaving the rest of the performance...
I was gutted when it vanished. It is by far the best version of the song, even compared to the official release.... :( The streamed mp3 has an ok quality, but I remember the old video clip having a better sound quality. If you have that version, PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE upload it!
Well opinions tend to difer as I see in the comments, but I believe a cello would fit this song SO much better, than the violin. Plus a little more consistant playing before the solo would be nice imo, I get the freestyle vibes too early in his playing
That voice on the very first word just made me gasp. His voice is,,,,,,, no words.
10 years later and i still have goose-bums every time i hear Ben's live performance.
Thank you, Ben.
I just... Why the feck isn't Ben Caplan a world-renowned artist already!?
First time i heard this song, I was stoned. Needless to say my mind was blown
It feels like a tenacious d reference

Do you have Stranger in Studio Q? I can't find anywhere.
I too have been searching for this, can't find the video but the audio is here at around 41 minutes. www.cbc.ca/radio/q/may-17-2013-1.1534843
Thank you for this!! I don't understand why they took down the video. It was hands down my favorite version of that song.
