    As many of you know, over two years ago, I quit my job and sold my house to start this Indie dev studio with my wife. Like many of you, our dream was to make games full-time.
    But we knew we needed to grow an audience, and we also knew we needed to start finding new ways to pay the bills before our savings ran out. So we started this UA-cam Channel!
    But now, time management has become a problem with 2 videos being published every week. So some changes are coming...
    I want to thank each and every one of you for continuing to show up and watch our comment. You all mean SO much to me!
    If you're new to our channel, we're Brandon & Nikki from Sasquatch B Studios. We sold our house to start our game studio, and work full time on building our business and making our game Samurado.

    This is the best decision. UA-cam doesn't reward a schedule as much as quality videos anyway.

    100% the right call - The objective has to be the priority!
    Your content is great and I've learned a bunch - and I plan to keep learning - but I'm excited to see what happens when you throw your focus at the process!
    Go get 'em!

    I think It's a great desition, I think 2 videos a week is also pretty demanding and actually I'm glad you cut off time of youtube to have a better dev roadmap. I'm super excited to see Samurado available at the steam store, literally buying it day 0. And I wish you both luck on the dev journey ahead!

    Congratulations on the success thus far! I think the decision to dial back and leave more time for development is the right choice. One video a week as worked well for us too.

    I think many viewers saw this comming. But I it's also a sign of quality because yout take it seriously. UA-cam is a full time job as much as game dev is. You had to do compromises at some point. I saw it in my gamedev Video last week, I only have my free time to do both, the video I made is crap and my game didn't make any progress neither.

  • @_jonathancollins

    At the end of the day, are you a game developer, or a content creator? It's really hard to be both.
    That said, I think you offer a unique perspective on game development that I really appreciate.
    My favorite videos you both put out are the videos that explain how you built something for your games specifically.
    "How to do [X]" type videos are nice, but it's better when I can see why someone would want to do it and how it fits into a larger project.
    Either way, keep up the good work, and do what you love!

    Think about the classic passionate dev teams from the '90s and '00s. Valve, Bungie, id... They hardly spent any time on marketing. They were doing all they could to keep their rate of development as high as possible to get the game out. It's very sensible to keep the YT work and such to a minimum. You're going all-in with the game dev enterprise, but you're technically working half-time, sometimes less, on the actual game.

    How much time do you think you'll get back for working on your game by going down to 1 video? This has been the #1 reason I have avoided thinking about making a public dev log or channel because I feel that it would jeopardize me working on the game itself.

    Interesting. I had honestly thought that your game dev was going to be shelved in favor of just making videos about game dev. Not being rude, it just seemed like YT was more profitable for you.
    Glad to see you’re making game dev more of a priority. Having launched a game, you will definitely need to keep up the income from content creation for a while longer until you release a few games. Make ‘em small, make ‘em quality and keep growing! 🎉

  • @KuittheGeek
    @KuittheGeek 16 днів тому

    I have been critical in the past, but I don honestly wish you luck and I hope you can get your game out there. I have done a little bit of video creation, but no where near as much as you. So I can definitely understand that most of your time must go towards creating videos and content to keep things moving. I want to see you finish a game. It felt a little disingenuous to start watching your content and seeing you were working on one game, that I assume will now never be released, but then switch to another game. It seems like you have some scope creep, and I would guess that has just gotten worse with the UA-cam commitment. I genuinely hope that this helps you get your game done and released. I would love to see you guys even push for a demo that you can put on Itch or Steam for people to play. I think that will help you get closer to actually releasing a game.
    Best of luck, and I am sure the content will still be as good as usual. I don't think you really need to have 2 videos a week anyway, you just need to stay consistent. I hope that with this change, things are able to progress along much faster for you. Small release games will lead you to bigger released games. Thanks for the content you have released, and keep up the good work.

    Ur using video editing as a distraction from doing the hard game development. Prbly because ur burnt out or u need a break.
    U should be outsourcing ur video editing. That way u can still make videos and work on samurato

    • @bitemegames
      @bitemegames 14 днів тому

      Except video editing is crazy expensive, I looked into it for our channel as well, but even some cheap editor in Pakistan charges $100/video. Yet these videos generally earn about $25 each, so there's just too much of a difference to justify outsourcing it.
      Also, IIRC he kind of outsources his editing, as his wife Nicky helps with the editing. -M

  • @robertrobert88887

    is there any point in running YT channel where your main audience is game devs who will not buy your game unless you're selling courses?

    • @bitemegames
      @bitemegames 14 днів тому

      So, as a gamedev UA-camr I think I am qualified to answer this. No gamedev starts UA-cam aiming to sell a course. UA-cam is more a way to get an income stream at this point to sustain development, instead of a marketting approach. Sure you'll get some wishlists along the way, but these generally convert much worse, and are often not a good ROI (it often takes over a year to reach 1k subs).
      AdSense on its own is garbage (around $2/1000 views), so that's when UA-cam Gamedevs are forced to start either a Patreon, Kickstarter or some other way of funding. UA-cam sponsors can be a big income as well, but these are harder to get since gamedevs generally don't have that much spending power compared to tech/finance UA-cam for example.
      This pushes you (the creator) inevitably into selling courses, because this is simply the highest earning way of monetization for most (with courses going for $99-$997), but it requires you to abandon a large part of your audience.
      At the end of the day, UA-cam gamedev takes a lot of dedication to build up to something sustainable, and it's not just a way to make a quick buck (either through selling your game, or courses).
      I started doing UA-cam, not because of it being our main marketing channel, but just because I always wanted to share my thoughts with the world. That's what allowed me to keep going for over 15 months before we started picking up any measurable views. -M

    I wish you replied to comments. This feels kind of robotic. Like you're using us for views or something.

    • @bitemegames
      @bitemegames 14 днів тому

      I get you, it can feel like screaming into the void when the creator does no interaction. But reading comments can also be extremely demotivating for us. Most comments are positive, but reading just a single comment where someone says they're rooting for you to fail can kill an entire day's focus.
      Our squishy human brains haven't evolved yet to be able to deal with hundreds of (near) anonymous comments coming in every day. If you are working on a tight deadline, with limited financial runway, losing a day of focus because some guy with an anime picture as his profile pic, simply isn't worth it.
      I try to read every single comment I get, because they contain some valuable criticism as well, but it took me a long time to learn how to detach my emotions from reading comments. -M
