I think you have highlighted the important things to survive in Taiwan for long term. Saving money is the rule for every one, no matter where he lives. Have local friends and could use local language to communicate are the keys to emerse into this society.

Sometimes we need a little push or accountability. Why not start a long term project like an “Allen learning Chinese” journey and vlog about it? Maybe start with a video of you trying to finding the “right” Chinese school (reach out to various mandarin language schools and see if they are willing to sponsor your channel), show us your struggles and triumphs, funny language interactions with locals, etc. maybe periodically you can do a video on how far you’ve come along.
My thinking is you may also be able reach more viewers outside of Taiwan. There are many who want to learn mandarin but are really only considering China (they may not even know about Taiwan as an option). Your journey can help you learn Chinese, hopefully gain more sponsors, maybe even promote Taiwan etc. A win for all!!

  • @zzzzzzzzzzzzl

Very sincere sharing from your 15 years experience here in Taiwan, so penetrating as well as down to earth. Appreciate your honesty and generous to show and conclude what you’ve been going through. It must contain bitterness over sweetness. Your recent series especially this clip show you’re rooting here rather than just roaming around.
So don’t worried about your Chinese. We all can sense that you are on the right track. Just Keep going, and you’ll know how to run.

It's a really good timing to find a Non-ESL job in Taiwan for Foreigners. Teaching English is not the only way. The population here is decreasing in the next decade, the outsider supplement would be nessesary. Guys you just need to step out, learn some local language and paticipate in. Local owner dont know how to go through the procedures for foreigner workers, if there are more information for them, they will release more optunities. Maybe you can do some research for this , Alen.

Just a caveat to point 2, avoid local banks for any investment advice and set up an international brokerage that has low fees and accepts "expats' based in Taiwan. One can use your Taiwan tax number (TIN - same as your ID card) to declare any relevant taxes, which are very little if resident in TW.

    1. Find a job which allows you to progress through your carrier.
    2. Save money and go meet the financial planner of your bank.
    3. Sign up for the local language course immediately.
    4. Go to make some close local friends with the poor language skill that you just learnt.
    Last, but not least:
    5. Get a good VPN such as NordVPN in case you're missing the ball games, dramas or any TV programs from your original homeland.
Your tips are not just useful for the foreigners living in TW, but also great tips for all foreigners who want to stay and live aboard in any country.

Yeah, sure. A job is a basic requirement. No job => no income => hunger => death. Problem is, you can't find a job here unless you're a native English speaker (as he is), or already speak Chinese AND have local connections. And because a job is a basic requirement from the start (unless you're rich) than you don't have much time to improve either Chinese or connections. Most ppl in these circunstances just fail and quit. Native English speakers and digital nomads are the priviledged groups. All others, beware.

Great advice. To sum up what you said, we use "disposable income" a lot when referring to finance. To achieve financial goals.....two important factors ie expectations and discipline. One have to set his or her expectation reasonable level that is achievable. Discipline discipline discipline...one cannot move away from it. One thing very common among the Chinese, they love gambling. If you go to the casinos in the US, full of Chinese. Among friends when they sat together, they gamble bei zhue and ma jong. People who gamble often associate with smoking and drinking. These three habits are the downfall of financial disaster.

You could really make our job easier if you could tell us the language you prefer to use when you walk to the counter. I personally don't like to assume you can't speak Mandarin so I would initiate the conversation in Chinese first and observe your reaction then decide whether I should ask you which language you would like me to switch to. Dear Allen,
Don't crying at home when time is gone? You need speed up to learn Chinese/ Taiwanese or call local language for your own good to living well in Taiwan. Here's how I learn English/ Spanish.
1, watch local tv specially all the News, they'll reply again for many times a day.
2, radio on all the time.... Who care Chinese/ Taiwanese? Talk show or songs.
This 2 help your hearing/ understanding... When you have a memory how to say it.
    3. Is Taiwan local library can find a group people like teachers/ retire to help you learning Chinese/ Taiwanese.
4, I wish Taiwanese family adopt you.... Don't give me wrong? In San Jose( silicon valley) Grandpa Joe adopted me and all family members adopt me even Papa passed away we still text each other every week.
5, don't using your own language try Chinese/ Taiwanese when you need to speak. I don't teach my co-workers Chinese but my Spanish good enough in the office. Wish you got my ideas will help you learning Chinese. I only agree Chinese is difficult to write ✍️ nothing different from other languages.

You’re such a b**ch caring about complexion, you are supposed to be ashamed for your reaction. Meh. 然後我們就拍完了 😁

Do you go to "lunch box" buffet restaurant in the evening ? Why it has to be called lunch box?

    • @GwilymJames
      @GwilymJames 3 роки тому +1

It is an English translation of 便當 biàndāng (literally convenient) which is also popular in Japan, and known as a "bento box" 弁当. They were brought over during the colonial period when Japan ruled Taiwan. They are most commonly eaten at lunchtime, from a buffet, so have the English meaning of lunchbox, although you can say bento of biandang too.
