- As a huge geek I thought it time I break down the medical scenes from the Marvel movie Doctor Strange from a real doctor's perspective! I'll explain how accurate it is, a bit more about what's happening on screen and share some of my experiences too!

So here is my first medical movie reaction! There are some cracking medical scenes in Doctor Strange, and a had loads of requests to give them a look, I do get a bit nerdy explaining things, but hey! that's what I'm here for. Timestamps:

Dr Hope's Sick Notes fun fact: Lamborghini offered to be the car that Dr. Strange crashes, even though brands usually don’t want to be associated with high speed accidents that ruin people’s lives. The reason given is “the accident should have been fatal, but it wasn’t.”

DR. Hope's Sick Notes FUN FACT: The burst fracture mentioned at 8:19 is referencing IRON MAN 2 when villain/antagonist Justin Hammer fails to make a knock-off Iron Man armor suit. The suit goes haywire, twisting in half during a test run and severely injures the test pilot!
Dr. Hope. could you do review on Team Medical Dragon? Its a japanese medical drama about Dr. Asada Ryutaro, a genius surgeon who formed a surgeon team to tackle difficult surgeries.
At the end of the credits of Doctor Strange it actually says ‘Please Drive Safely’

As soon as he broke down that all of the complex terms are basically combinations of words to a certain body part, it became so much easier to have a general idea of what they're talking about.
Itis = Inflammation
Hepat = Liver
Hepatitis = Liver Inflammation
It all works like that, my partner did nursing and she told me that it's pretty much just combining words so you don't have to learn a million different terms, only a few hundred.
Before going into EMS i used to think the same... how do these people remember all these huge and random ass words. Took EMT classes and found that it really isn’t TOO big of a deal. Yes it may take some remembering but it really isn’t a huge deal now

I like that you review the medical scenes without making it a condemnation of the whole movie. That while the medical stuff tells part of the story you remind people it wasn’t really the main focus. Great analysis.

Went to get my gall bladder removed, surprised the surgeon asked me what music would be played. I said, "got any EDM?" and he played one for me... couldn't even finish the track as I already went under the anesthesia

When i had my wisdom teeth removed in boot camp they were playing lots of Michael Jackson. I was tapping my finger to the jams but really wanted to sing along.
Wish they would have done that for me when they implanted my heart monitor...it would have helped me relax instead of constantly having to tell me to stop moving I probably would have just closed my eyes and relaxed.

Also me: *has learned more in this 22 minute video about a marvel movie than I did in most of those courses*

Then your teachers weren't that good.
Most a & p classes deal with general information about the body organs and systems and what happens when something goes wrong. The doctor in this video mostly talks about the applied skills used to treat the illnesses or injuries. These would be learned in other classes. Keep learning you'll get there soon enough.
I feel that, I'm in my 4th year of pharmacy school and I learned some of these things in my classes (like the part about which arrhythmias are shockable rhythms and the anatomy and physiology stuff) but I've never known what a cardiac tamponade is
You understood this video well enough to truly understand and retain the fiddly details because of your strong foundation!
The reason the defibrillator brought him back alive Immediately is because it wasn’t a normal cardiac arrest, it was because he flying kicked him and he passed out in the astroplane, and all the defibrillator did was give him enough energy to wake back up in the astroplane.

He's not criticising the movie, he's criticising the real-life accuracy of the medical scenes within the movie.
What may seem "nitpicky" ordinarily become massive and glaring flaws in a surgical context.
As somebody who has undergone surgery, I'd prefer my surgeon to be the most "nitpicky" person ever. Not dying is a top priority of mine.

All I can say is that if I had a skeleton at home, I'd totally use it to hang my lanyard up after work too.
It was a present from my family whilst at medical school, I said it would help me with anatomy. When it arrived I sent them a fun photo with it in a wig, glasses and a guitar; my dad replied "Putting it to good use then?".
@@DrHopeSickNotes when I worked at my local museum in Portland Oregon, OMSI (Oregon museum of science & industry), an interactive museum, in the life hall with our live animals we had a skeleton in the corner with an employee badge and photo, and he was listed as a staff member. Fun place and watching your videos make me super nostalgic of it all
My friend used to hang her lab coat on the skeleton after classes... We used a different bone set while studying with her... So, it remained as a coat stand throughout our college years... ;)
Makes me so happy to hear him mention Occupational Therapists in this. Even just in passing. So many people don't even know what OT is and as a COTA myself, I love hearing my profession brought up! We need more advocacy for Occupational Therapy! Thank you!

I really love that the burst fracture thing was a callback to one of the Ironman movies, where you actually see a guy in a exo-suit, get his torso fully rotated 180°. It's the subtle things that make all the MCU movies good

@@icatfishedyourdad2767I think that it could be interpreted either way, but the guy in Iron Man 2 makes more sense to me - if it was Rhodey, then they’d probably say that he was one of the Avengers. And I feel like the implication is that the first half of this movie takes place over a long period - he has his accident, spends several months trying everything to get his hands fixed, and then trains at Kamar-Taj for a few years before fighting with Caecilius. So the Iron Man 2 guy makes sense with the timeline - the movie begins in early phase 1 and catches up with the rest of the MCU by the end.

I did, it was super interesting to see a skull and feel the corresponding parts of the skull on your own, freaky but awesome
I felt it and realized the big bump in the back of my head is called an occipital bun. Apparently it was common in Neanderthals, and not as common in modern humans. Least that's what I read... When do i get my club to help me get a mate, or star in a insurance commercial.

I am a non medical staff in a hospital. Sometimes I see doctors, MAs, and nurses about to open their food that they just bought and the announcement goes off. And when my shift is over, I saw the same food. Cold, uneaten.

Not related to the video but, just wanna convey my gratitude.
I'm so happy Dr Hope also addresses how it looks from a story/movie standpoint. It's interesting to know what's accurate and what's not, but it's very nice to hear an expert tell it in a very non-condescending way. Like "Oh yeah, that isn't how we do things, you see this in medical dramas all the time, but it's a bit nice for storytelling" is such a nice way to approach it.

Doctor hope saves real lives doctor strange just learns lines and acts them
Someone who worked on the movie here with some interesting facts -
We actually visited various hospitals around London, and even watched an actual brain surgery take place which was a bit life changing. We also had real surgeons on set while shooting all the hospital scenes just in case we messed up real bad!

I absolutely love that you can appreciate the fact that it is a story after all, and that not everything that goes on in the ER, OR or elsewhere in the hospital is very entertaining from a story perspective. I also like how you break down the medical facts from the fiction, and the medical terms. I know pretty well how hectic things can be in the ER as my mom was an ER nurse for years, but not everyday would be "entertaining" even as a reality show. People tend to think it is always like that, but there are slow days and most of a nurse's or doctor's day that day would be spent just making the rounds and checking on patients, nothing most would want to watch lol. I applaud your open-mindedness and your professionalism.

On the bullet thing... Guns are my thing, and they used the wrong bullet shape in the movie. A bullet with a pointy nose like that is, broadly, a "spitzer" bullet, which is a shape used almost exclusively in high velocity rifles. It's definitely a rifle bullet given its size compared to the victim's head, and a larger caliber one like a 7.62mm, too.
The thing is, bare lead doesn't work well at high velocities. The pressure behind the lead will cut the lead, and the softness of the lead (even if you alloy it and/or water quench it) will leave a lot of lead behind in your rifled barrel. There are ways to mitigate that, but to make a long story short; almost every single one of these bullets is "jacketed". The lead core is covered in another metal, usually copper that's been punched out of a sheet. Sometimes other metals like steel that's copper plated, cupro-nickel or brass.
I guess someone could use a spitzer bullet in a low velocity loading; there are some applications out there, but really the sharp point is there for aerodynamics and isn't helpful below a certain point. But even that aside, if that pointed bullet went through someone's skull, if it was just a lead alloy, it would be all kind of deformed. Even with a thick jacket of a hard material, I'd expect to see some deformation in the image.
Aaaand it looks like they pulled out a .22 caliber copper or brass solid bullet.

if I remember correctly, the choice to have him drive a Lamborghini was more one out of the fact that no car company wanted them to show their car getting destroyed in an accident. Lamborghini saw this as a way to show how safe their cars really are. kinda like them saying 'hey, if he can survive an accident that bad and not have any real life-threatening injuries to his head or torso, then those cars must be really safe'. Combine that with the fact that lots of kids watch marvel movies (the millionaires of tomorrow if you will) it was really a no-brainer for Lamborghini to let marvel destroy their car. even going as far as to donate 2 Huracans to use in their movie and letting the studio destroy one of them (if I remember correctly)

Doctor strange is a guy that likes to work in mainly extremely unusual operations so this bullet scene in the beginning of the movie being really far fetched really is quite accurate for his character.
