Lol, you just talked about what I think. Bendo is criticising season 3, but I criticise Season 4 for never mentioning the samadhi fire that is still inside Mei. She never uses it after Season 3 and she also didn't ask if Red Son want's his Power back.
Well even though it’s strong, it isn’t easy to control and is likely a last resort. I think it should’ve been mentioned that she still had it, especially in the s4 finale because that could’ve been discussed a backup tactic for taking down azure as he tore the fabric of reality.
this show really suffers from its limited season and episode length. So many storylines could've been expanded on if only they were given more time to be fleshed out.

I think these problems could be solved if the show wasn't limited to 11 minutes per episode, 10 episodes per season, and a 40-minute special each season finale. That's one of the things I wish were different. Overall, I love this show and don't even have many criticisms about it.
Same here. For example, season 4 when binged feels so bloated and overwhelming. I binged season 4 when it first came out in both mandarin and english and I was shocked at how little time it took me with how much lore there was in the season. The show is great, and I love it to pieces, but the way it’s executed in this regard is just saddening. I really hope this changes in season 5. It very likely won’t since it’s been the same for 5 years now, but still.
Despite the inconsistent power system and timeline the show surprisingly is well written enough for me to just forgive these blunders 😭 the buildup for the samadhi fire was good imo, it wasn't sudden. However they completely nerfed it and never brought it up again, which is fascinating since it's a potent deity killer

Hopefully in S5 they get a good interaction between Mei and wukong because they like NEVER interact on their own in S4 and any time they DO interact it’s always with the GROUP. Heck I actually don’t think they even TALK to eachother in S4! So, either they just didn’t realise they didn’t make these two interact OR they are trying to save it for S5.
I think the writers just don't know how their interaction would work. I see they had trouble previously with some dynamic, like with Sandy (obviously, they even making fun at their confusion on wwhat to do for Sandy's character quite multiple times LMAO).
Amazing how the show is still this good, even in its weaker seasons. I feel like that's a testament to just how solid Mokie Kid actually is. I really hope we get a lot of more character focused seasons that can tie their arcs together a little better though.
I hate that for the whole season they kept saying that the samadhi fire was the ONLY way to defeat lbd but then proceeded to defeat her without it. It was so disappointing cause Mei could’ve finally had her own victory.
Yeah. I’m also confused why there weren’t other options besides that. In the novel, Wukong used to ask deities and spirits for help whenever him and his friends were caught in a jam. Fought alongside them as well since they also had history slaying evil demons and deities. The show runners could have added that detail to the story too

I know Monkey kid is not accurate to the books but that would have been so cool and would have added more worldbuilding, that's a missed opportunity if you ask me.
Your point about the samadhi fire scene is literally shown through the shots. While she’s consumed by the samadhi fire, the pinnacle of everything the show had been hinting about her for the entire season, the camera is almost exclusively on Wukong and the rest of the cast.
Macaque never gets called out with Wukong, just Wukong and It feel let down and disappointed, that Wukong only one gets the consequences from Mei herself
While I admit he is cool in his own right, part of me is frustrated by him for being so two faced and not being called out for his faults. Especially for gaslighting MK. While I feel bad for him and his past, he still deserves an earful rants.
I hope that in season 5 (if there will be a season 5) that mei, pigsy,sandy,tang, and Nezha have more development and impact on the story. Edit: I realize that it would also be nice if their ancestors could have more development aswell
11:20 Mei's power build up and being interrupted by MK's story/powers honestly doesn't really bother me as much as I thought it would, because Mei and MK have often had their dynamic be compared to Wukong and Macaque. We all know the story of the Hero and the Warrior, and how Wukong would always steal the spotlight, leaving Macaque behind in the shadows. I don't know if it is intentional or not, but this is happening with Mei in MK's story. If Season 5 really is expanding more on Mei's story, we may start to see the big shift in their dynamic and Mei taking up more of the action while MK is struggling with his issues, much similar to what Macaque had to do when Wukong was dealing with his own (before or after the havoc in heaven, you can decide)
Honestly out of all of main gang, mei is probably my least favorite, and your reasonings in this video highlight it perfectly. She just doesnt really do anything and sandy doesnt do much either but when he has an impactful scene, it actually makes sense and feels impactful. Mei is awesome dont get me wrong but yes i 100% agree that a lot of her is just missed potential
Glad to see someone else love the show but still retain issues with it! It has a rather confusing continuity (it picks and chooses what carries over from JTTW, whether MK is actually invincible or not, etc), its focus on the main cast is inbalanced, and sometimes it’s too fast-paced for its own good. Despite that, we can still say it’s one hell of a show!! Can’t wait to see your next video on it. From the sounds of it, we’re not getting season 5 for a while yet.
Rewatching it, I love how they hinted at the plot twist, like just the framing in certain shots tells us way before the actual event we just didn't piece it together.
i have a lot of fun watching and rewatching this season, it's great to see the emphasis the other characters get besides mk. it just struggles in the way it ties to the rest of the show. but it's still a fun time!!
My other peeves with this season was Episode 3, Macaque not getting called out for his faults and Wukong not bothering to interact with the rest of the cast. I know that they look like his old friends and it’s probably uncomfortable for him to look at the shadows of his past, but they still need his help both physically and mentally. Especially MK, he was clearly traumatized and no one bothered to comfort him about it. I enjoy your analysis still. Can’t wait to see other videos like this.
I can't make any promises, but mei got a giant lego mech and dragon figure. Both over 100 Canadian. So i really don't imagine she isn't gonna be left behind considering the show still is a toy add.
I feel like with all the situations of MK always overshadowing Mei in shows of power, the writers are setting up some sort of “warrior is abandoned by hero” thing with him, but I personally would prefer a better character arc for her over that repeating history stuff. I would have loved to see a struggle of having to suppress her loud personality in order to control the fire, and redefining her perception of herself within her conflict with family!!
Honestly, it never occurred to me that Mei doesn’t really have many victories. The most I heard of Mei in context of season 3 was in terms of shipping, rather than her own character. (This is not to bash shippers or anything, just stating a personal observation.) It is a worrying pattern in general, but it has a bit more weight bc its the only main female character. The pattern of “Mei powers up, then is interrupted by outside factor” still continues in the season 4 special.
I’m terrified of shipping in this show becoming canon. Don’t get me wrong, romance is fine, but I just hate romance and this is one of the few shows that doesn’t have it. And, being honest, this show doesn’t seem like a type of show that wouldn’t work well with romance. The main focus is fighting bad guys and trying to get stronger to defeat the next big threat, and romance would probably be underdeveloped. This is more of a rant that’s in my own personal opinion, but seeing a comment talk about it just wanted me to talk about it.
I think it would have been interesting for Mei Wukong to also be like a little bit her mentor, because she's friends with MK and they're always together, so she sees their training and she's there with them, she would have talked to Wukong and I don't know, she would tell him what she feels she has to do like this destiny, I mean she basically tells him her concerns and he helps her or gives her advice, that don't worry you can do your destiny and he trusts in you, and then that in that one moment that thanks to that trust in her she manages to do something kind of like MK who trusts himself and saves the day, something like that, and Wukong is seen as well as proud of that, like, she took me into account, she listened to me, a little bit like a protective figure I think it would have been very interesting because she genuinely would have talked to him and said what she felt, vulnerable with him and he didn't take that into account to be honest with her
i 100% agree on the mei and wukong thing like they definitely deserved more screentime together, i love their dynamic so much the title had me nervous(cuz i LOVE season 3 lol) but youre very right here, i wish the show didnt push mei aside as often as they do
To me it doesn’t make sense that Red son didn’t receive the Fire back as the original vessel I understand the DBK family are side characters of the side characters but Red son has been practicing all of his life with his flame and for that just to be a portion of what his original self was and beyond that there’s no explanation of why he was born with that much power the they literally just say DBK kids are special but he was Super special like??? And all of that for this super OP World changing power just to end up as nothing in the next season is almost ridiculous

He do get grilled in season 4 . But to me it was not that good because we never actually see and know what Wukong feel. Even in HIS own memory they let other tell Wukong story and it's Macaque of all people. That Six-Eared Clown didn't tell the whole story, he miss the all the important staff put Wukong in all bad light. Mei being angry at Wukong always fell like heated moment kinda thing you know? Like in the video say it not have enough build up for both of them. We never actually know how they see each other. Yes, we know Mei trust Wukong but what other options does she really have? She see Wukong as friend but how close? Never that close right? And for Wukong never be close to anyone other than MK he keep his distant and always see with MK or meditation. He look like he never thought them as friend not in bad way, he give me vibe "They not my friend, they are MK's friend and family but not mine". She was angry to Wukong is understandable because it kinda Wukong's fault for ruining the Samadhi Fire ritual . Wukong not telling Mei about the ring inside of her is wrong but also understandable because Wukong have history of people not listening to him and punish him for it. But let's not forget why Mei burning, it because of Macaque who the one pressure and threaten them to start the Samadhi Fire ritual before Wukong can carry out his plan. Wukong's real plan was to remove the Samadhi Fire ring from Mei without hurting Mei and put it inside him so he gonna tell her anyway but Macaque ruin it and when everything gone wrong he run away (like he always do) and Mei never call him out for doing that
Yes, we do. But I understand that this show isn't everyone's cup of tea when it comes to the story, and yeah I obviously don't like that one of my favorite show is being criticized, I would never attack them over it. Everyone has different preferences and I can accept that. 😊

honestly I feel the way this couldve been handled was probably just giving the show more time. They didnt fully know if they were getting a season 4 and probably felt they had to tie it all up in a nice bow. I wish we wouldve had some more focus on mei trying to control the samadhi fire in season 4. we get a mention and thats it. It felt like it was brushed away in favor of MK's whole thing. I absolutely love season 3, its my favorite of all the seasons, but the samadhi fire deserved a bit more time. cutting out episode 3 and giving the samadhi fire one more episode seems like the best course of action in my opinion. along with season 4 giving a bit more of focus with it. we get a hint of mei development with what she tells ao lie, but like, nothing beyond that. I want a liiitle bit more on that front. nothing that breaks the plot in my opinion, but def something that should be adressed

A personal annoyance when it comes to the shows writing, especially for season 3, was the wasted potential and missed opportunity of Mei’s powers and reason’s usage within the season. I found it weird that mei, a Chinese dragon, barely uses her dragon abilities, just the sword snd dragonkinesis, which is cool but her other abilities would be amazing to see. Gassing dragons can grant wishes, shapeshift and control the water and weather. Since mei already has an arc about accepting herself as part of her family, I think I’d would’ve been if after meeting Ao Guang, he wouldn’t taught her about her “true potential” when it came to her powers and abilities as a dragon, insulating her to know more about her family and culture. I was mainly thinking that this comics coincided with mei practicing controlling lightning, water or gaining her dragon from in the background of season 3, which couldn’t coincided with her trying to use her new found powers to break free from the fire of samadhi but failing; resulting in her feeling useless, dangerous, ect and have her character arc then be similar to MK’s with trying to gain/ learn her powers. It also would’ve then made sense to have her try and relinquish the fire from her since she knows it’s dangerous and doesn’t want to use it on top of already having a set of abilities that she wants to master. Given the fact that redson himself was the person who made the samadhi fire and even trained mei in joe to harness and control it I thought it was weird that there wasn’t a scene where they “gave” it back to him since he seems like the best option to have it, plus he’s redeemed in a sense and we don’t need two fire users on the team (oh wait mei never used it again so I guess we do only have one lol). Spitballing but I think they definitely could’ve done more with mei in general, especially in s3
I think season 3 should be a Redson centric season, like subtracting the Samadhi fire failing and leaving a smaller ring inside of him. In season 3 Redson coming with the crew to stop the Lady Bone Demon to get some closure of what she done to his father. Also we can get a plot line of Redson reclaiming the power that gave him so much trouble when he was a kid, just like MK reclaiming Wukongs powers.
In seasone 4 when Subhodi mentios that Mei doesn't have the Samadhi fire anymore I was so confused. Mei was still able to use green fire so I guess she just can use fire now? And did she give it back to Red Son? But then why didn't he use it against Azure Lion? WHERE IS THE SAMADHI FIRE?!
I feel like they could be doing a lot more with Mei in general, there’s a lot of setup with her in seasons 3 and 4 that ends up falling to the wayside.
I'll say one thing here, the smartie kid episode holds nothing to the plot of season 3 asides giving MK his golden eyes of truth back, and it couldve been a better episode with the same characters. Its that type of episode that feels it should've been in season one as a slice of life, and it could've been where MK tries to win this game and continues to fail, so Mei drags Wukong, as the others are busy with the TEA, to find an alternative. And maybe her and Monkey King could've talked about their love for MK, or their differences, or maybe Wukong tried to distance himself at the mention of her ancestors fue to the samadhi fire or him missing them too greatly. Maybe we get him talking to jer about jer family, and she shows and talks about her dynamic with them, but Wulong feels unsure as Ao Lie was one of his besties(especially since hes a canonical horse girl). And goes out of his way to show that her ancestors should be proud of her or something akin to that. Idk maybe goldfish demon guy could be a ruse and hilds a grudge against mei's family and underestimates her since she may not be the idea of what he had in mind. I just do my best to avoid that episode since i feel it doesn't do anything.
VERY late to this video but, as someone who's fav character is Mei, thank you for this. It hurts SO much to see Mei get pushed to the side over and over again when she has an unbelievable amount of potential. It's real salt in the wound when she herself, in seasons 4 and 5, mention wanting to do and BE more, yet they completely ignore the Samadhi Fire and only bring it back momentarily in 5. The potential for her to go through different arcs about how she feels about her role in the group and how she feels about Wukong is there, but squandered SO bad man. I'm sorry but i will never not be insanely pissed and upset about how the fire was given to mei instead of red son, this plot choice in my opinion is a flaw in of itself. They wasted a potential villain-to-redemption arc for him and he ends up feeling more like a side character when he should be more important. If you disagree with me saying the fire should have been reds, just think for a moment how insanely interesting of a plot that would be, a sort-of-ally suddenly losing his mind and becoming another threat before a redemption, reds redemption has been built up, even subtly, since season one and i fully expected for it to reach its climax and conclusion in season 3 but noooooo they went with giving mei an "ok" arc when she deserved so much more and making red suddenly a good-ish guy MEI DESERVES HER OWN REAL ARC. this didn't feel like her arc! I can't even recall if she developed AT ALL! *TRAUMA IS NOT DEVELOPMENT*
I agree. Red and his parents should have been getting more screen time in this show. They may not be trying to take over the world anymore, but they’re still interesting characters that deserve to have attention

I have so many Mei theory’s that I’m hoping they explore in season 5 mostly her family and relations to the dragon of the east one as her parents have their own dragon form things but Mei doesn’t. The dragon she fights with is Aolie’s dragon form and He is tied to the sword somehow and I want to know more.
Imagine how legendary it would have been if they’d let Mei go all out in battle. If the mere sight of possessed Wukong sent her into a cosmic fiery rage. If they’d dropped everything and battled across the sky with the full power of the samadhi fire with all of reality at stake. Power like that would scare everyone, even the Lady Bone Demon. It would also be cool to see Red Son be the one managing to cam Mei down and stop her from destroying the universe. The plot could basically proceed as normal after that, but it would be an incredible way to raise the stakes and spice up the middle of the s3 special. I had felt that it got kind of boring toward the middle anyway
Something i find annoying about season 3(/2) along with mei 2 was LBD, tbh. Her motivation was “the World is flawed so i wanna destroy it and make it perfect” which i just never understood because nothing is ever perfect and there has to be flaws somewhere. It feels like such a shallow and Generic motivation as well i’ve heard a thousand times before. + i just didnt lile her personality either, as it felt like she was just set up to be Dark Mysterious and Evil and in the end thats all she really became. It gave some good moments and gave good episodes, but its obviously never good to feel like the main and very serious villian is both dumb and extremely Generic. +Also we barely Got any episodes without her and so i just started getting really tired of her and watching LMK in general tbh. Season 3 just felt really Weak in general for me tbh. I dont really mind if anybody likes her and if you do, please do tell me why bc i really really wanna like season 3/2! And no i dont hate the entirety of season 3/2 or anything LBD is in. There was a lot of good Character arcs episodes and development, i just didnt like LBD.
The main problem of this show is how short every season is, they don't have enought time to squeeze everything they want to becuse of this format. LBD really shows this problem just by how much she suffered from 140 minute season format. She needed more screen time in my opinion, more backstory and just getting to her mind overall, that way she could be even better. I still liked her though, menacing, smart and powerful character, plus she felt like a threat even more than azure for me

I have a feeling sexism has something to do with these issues involving Mei, with how female characters in media get treated with writing in comparison to male characters, making them sort of feel less important. The same treatment can also apply to fandoms
I feel the primary reason Mei’s arc in s3 failed isn’t about screen time, it’s more about a failure to challenge her role. She’s the Goofy Loud Comedic character, and they were afraid to show her grappling with trauma and fear. They probably worried that giving her another layer would jeopardize her comedy potential in future stories. And personally at this point, Mei has been obnoxious for so long that all I really want is for her screentime to be reduced. Because whenever she isn’t with Red Son she’s so irritating

Ive always felt like mei and wukong would always have an interesting dynamic because of how similar mei is to wukongs younger self(Im not saying they are similar in issuses) and the whole samadhi fire couldve really help show it. Side note how the HELL DID MEI LOSE? Youre telling me she has a powerful weapon wanted by both sides because it could beat the lbd and she loses. Why? What benefit does it have?
The part that annoys me honestly is that this could’ve lead to an arc where Mei is scared of a power she has and forcefully holds herself back out of fear of hurting those close to her, similar to MK’s arc in season 5. It’d be a neat change to have the hothead scared of using her powers until she learns(probably through Red Son) that she doesn’t need to be scared. It could make a nice parallel arc to MK and his fear of his own monkey form
She kind of did?? It’s VERY very minimal but we did see when red son made a new samadhi fire she used her brand new sword as a way to channel what’s left of the original fire in her body. It’s nowhere near enough as an arc, but it’s a start that I think lays out groundwork that could lead to great results in season 6. I noticed with both MK and Mei that there were problems hinted at but weren’t yet resolved (No one telling MK that it’s not all is fault and he had to do everything himself anyway, the chaos as the new villain, and Mei’s fear is still there), which makes it feel like it’s all intentional. Maybe even Mei’s poor development in season 3 could’ve been intentional because we obviously know they can develop these characters in meaningful ways and so do they (Although it’s just as likely that they completely flubbed their chance for Mei’s growth). Still, I think it’s good to stay optimistic. It’s small but there’s signs there’s something for her. We just have to wait :).
I wonder why the samadhi fire didn't affect Wukong? In JTTW it was the only 'fire that Sun Wukong wasn't immune to? (I think I'd like to see Mei being mad after seeing SWK at the temple and attacking him and then MK comes in and trys to stop her because he doesn't want to hurt his mentor and Mei is like, "why are you here MK!?" with a mix of shame, anger at being stopped and is worried for MK! (I am NOT a writer, please forgive me if it's a bit off from the timing of the show or just a bit too cringe)
Monkie kid is a great show though by itself it would be a great show with the sets it is Aaaaaaaa btw the shot when mai uses her dragon on macaque and mk it it is great the chills for me for no reason
I think Mei's training could have been important if they hadn't made the fire null and void after the season 3 special. We never see it in s4 and that is disappointing to me because it makes it feel as tho it never had meaning in the first place, in season 3 it was a mcguffin to drive the story along and once aquired it was basically forgotten about as a necessary part to defeat LBD and disappears right after her defeat

I've talked to someone about this before and my point still stands, the biggest flaw of LMK is the lack of time the show has to flesh out the world and its characters. This is just my opinion, but I feel like if it had more time to nurture the story, it could've been the new ATLA in terms of popularity and depth, or at least somewhere close to it. Like no joke, it has an interesting concept, great characters, lore that can be explored more because it has an existing source to get inspired from, this show is already great, but it could've been AMAZING. But this is just my opinion so we can agree to disagree

This is why I think the Samadhi Fire should've stayed as Red Son's power (I also think he should've joined the main cast). That way the Samadhi Fire might've retained some presence beyond season 3 instead of transforming to Mei's green and never being mentioned again. The animators could've shifted Red Son's fire pallet from oranges to the Samadhi Fire's dark reds. Also, I think Mk should've been the one to be possessed by the Lady Bone Demon in order for Mei to have a reason not to use the Samadhi Fire to it's full potential. That way instead of Mei failing to use one of the universe's strongest weapons, it's her unable to destroy her best friend. Plus, with Mk out of the picture, it would've opened up room for other characters as well as show what they would do when Mk isn't around. As for Mei's development, I think Mei should've had some kind of mentor (like her uncle) to help with her development as well as develop her swordsmanship and Dragon Powers so she has more versatility like Mk. Heck, maybe even give her an actual dragon form instead of that hologram to match Mk getting his monkey form (and War Form when fighting Azure).

Even when I watched season three I didn’t like the direction they took with the samadhi fire, it has too many plot holes and iffy explanations or me to fully be on board with how it was used.
A thing that really bothers me is that in season four Mei said that they couldn't just be sitting meditating or whatever, when she already learned that last season!

Season 4 and 5 are the best seasons by far. Personally i dont hate season three but its not my favourite. Season 1 and 2 arent the best but they are what started the show. Everything i just said was in my opinion. Pls dont roast me
My biggest gripe with the show is how there is ZERO representation of any group. There's no racial minorities, gays, transgenders, fats, queers, xens, and the list goes on. They never even asked a single person what their pronouns were. Made it unwatchable

Well even though it’s strong, it isn’t easy to control and is likely a last resort. I think it should’ve been mentioned that she still had it, especially in the s4 finale because that could’ve been discussed a backup tactic for taking down azure as he tore the fabric of reality.

this show really suffers from its limited season and episode length. So many storylines could've been expanded on if only they were given more time to be fleshed out.
That being said, I'm amazed with what they've been able to do regardless. Goes to show that the team is doing their best with what they're given.

I think these problems could be solved if the show wasn't limited to 11 minutes per episode, 10 episodes per season, and a 40-minute special each season finale. That's one of the things I wish were different. Overall, I love this show and don't even have many criticisms about it.
Same here. For example, season 4 when binged feels so bloated and overwhelming. I binged season 4 when it first came out in both mandarin and english and I was shocked at how little time it took me with how much lore there was in the season. The show is great, and I love it to pieces, but the way it’s executed in this regard is just saddening. I really hope this changes in season 5. It very likely won’t since it’s been the same for 5 years now, but still.

Despite the inconsistent power system and timeline the show surprisingly is well written enough for me to just forgive these blunders 😭 the buildup for the samadhi fire was good imo, it wasn't sudden. However they completely nerfed it and never brought it up again, which is fascinating since it's a potent deity killer

I think the writers just don't know how their interaction would work. I see they had trouble previously with some dynamic, like with Sandy (obviously, they even making fun at their confusion on wwhat to do for Sandy's character quite multiple times LMAO).
Amazing how the show is still this good, even in its weaker seasons. I feel like that's a testament to just how solid Mokie Kid actually is. I really hope we get a lot of more character focused seasons that can tie their arcs together a little better though.

Yeah. I’m also confused why there weren’t other options besides that. In the novel, Wukong used to ask deities and spirits for help whenever him and his friends were caught in a jam. Fought alongside them as well since they also had history slaying evil demons and deities. The show runners could have added that detail to the story too

Your point about the samadhi fire scene is literally shown through the shots. While she’s consumed by the samadhi fire, the pinnacle of everything the show had been hinting about her for the entire season, the camera is almost exclusively on Wukong and the rest of the cast.
Macaque never gets called out with Wukong, just Wukong and It feel let down and disappointed, that Wukong only one gets the consequences from Mei herself
And Macaque then pop out of "nowhere" in season 4 and team up with Mei with no problems

While I admit he is cool in his own right, part of me is frustrated by him for being so two faced and not being called out for his faults. Especially for gaslighting MK. While I feel bad for him and his past, he still deserves an earful rants.

Mei's power build up and being interrupted by MK's story/powers honestly doesn't really bother me as much as I thought it would, because Mei and MK have often had their dynamic be compared to Wukong and Macaque. We all know the story of the Hero and the Warrior, and how Wukong would always steal the spotlight, leaving Macaque behind in the shadows. I don't know if it is intentional or not, but this is happening with Mei in MK's story. If Season 5 really is expanding more on Mei's story, we may start to see the big shift in their dynamic and Mei taking up more of the action while MK is struggling with his issues, much similar to what Macaque had to do when Wukong was dealing with his own (before or after the havoc in heaven, you can decide)

She just doesnt really do anything and sandy doesnt do much either but when he has an impactful scene, it actually makes sense and feels impactful. It has a rather confusing continuity (it picks and chooses what carries over from JTTW, whether MK is actually invincible or not, etc), its focus on the main cast is inbalanced, and sometimes it’s too fast-paced for its own good.
Despite that, we can still say it’s one hell of a show!! Can’t wait to see your next video on it. From the sounds of it, we’re not getting season 5 for a while yet.

i have a lot of fun watching and rewatching this season, it's great to see the emphasis the other characters get besides mk. it just struggles in the way it ties to the rest of the show. but it's still a fun time!!
My other peeves with this season was Episode 3, Macaque not getting called out for his faults and Wukong not bothering to interact with the rest of the cast. I know that they look like his old friends and it’s probably uncomfortable for him to look at the shadows of his past, but they still need his help both physically and mentally. Especially MK, he was clearly traumatized and no one bothered to comfort him about it. I enjoy your analysis still. Can’t wait to see other videos like this.
I'm still waiting for that Macque video since he's one of the coolest characters in the series of monkey kid and a very interesting character.

I can't make any promises, but mei got a giant lego mech and dragon figure. Both over 100 Canadian. So i really don't imagine she isn't gonna be left behind considering the show still is a toy add.
I feel like with all the situations of MK always overshadowing Mei in shows of power, the writers are setting up some sort of “warrior is abandoned by hero” thing with him, but I personally would prefer a better character arc for her over that repeating history stuff. I would have loved to see a struggle of having to suppress her loud personality in order to control the fire, and redefining her perception of herself within her conflict with family!!
Honestly, it never occurred to me that Mei doesn’t really have many victories. The most I heard of Mei in context of season 3 was in terms of shipping, rather than her own character. (This is not to bash shippers or anything, just stating a personal observation.)
It is a worrying pattern in general, but it has a bit more weight bc its the only main female character. The pattern of “Mei powers up, then is interrupted by outside factor” still continues in the season 4 special.
I’m terrified of shipping in this show becoming canon. Don’t get me wrong, romance is fine, but I just hate romance and this is one of the few shows that doesn’t have it.
And, being honest, this show doesn’t seem like a type of show that wouldn’t work well with romance. The main focus is fighting bad guys and trying to get stronger to defeat the next big threat, and romance would probably be underdeveloped.
This is more of a rant that’s in my own personal opinion, but seeing a comment talk about it just wanted me to talk about it.

I think it would have been interesting for Mei Wukong to also be like a little bit her mentor, because she's friends with MK and they're always together, so she sees their training and she's there with them, she would have talked to Wukong and I don't know, she would tell him what she feels she has to do like this destiny, I mean she basically tells him her concerns and he helps her or gives her advice, that don't worry you can do your destiny and he trusts in you, and then that in that one moment that thanks to that trust in her she manages to do something kind of like MK who trusts himself and saves the day, something like that, and Wukong is seen as well as proud of that, like, she took me into account, she listened to me, a little bit like a protective figure I think it would have been very interesting because she genuinely would have talked to him and said what she felt, vulnerable with him and he didn't take that into account to be honest with her

He do get grilled in season 4 . But to me it was not that good because we never actually see and know what Wukong feel. Even in HIS own memory they let other tell Wukong story and it's Macaque of all people. That Six-Eared Clown didn't tell the whole story, he miss the all the important staff put Wukong in all bad light. Mei being angry at Wukong always fell like heated moment kinda thing you know? Like in the video say it not have enough build up for both of them. We never actually know how they see each other. Yes, we know Mei trust Wukong but what other options does she really have? She see Wukong as friend but how close? Never that close right? And for Wukong never be close to anyone other than MK he keep his distant and always see with MK or meditation. He look like he never thought them as friend not in bad way, he give me vibe "They not my friend, they are MK's friend and family but not mine". She was angry to Wukong is understandable because it kinda Wukong's fault for ruining the Samadhi Fire ritual . Wukong not telling Mei about the ring inside of her is wrong but also understandable because Wukong have history of people not listening to him and punish him for it. But let's not forget why Mei burning, it because of Macaque who the one pressure and threaten them to start the Samadhi Fire ritual before Wukong can carry out his plan. Wukong's real plan was to remove the Samadhi Fire ring from Mei without hurting Mei and put it inside him so he gonna tell her anyway but Macaque ruin it and when everything gone wrong he run away (like he always do) and Mei never call him out for doing that

honestly I feel the way this couldve been handled was probably just giving the show more time. They didnt fully know if they were getting a season 4 and probably felt they had to tie it all up in a nice bow. A personal annoyance when it comes to the shows writing, especially for season 3, was the wasted potential and missed opportunity of Mei’s powers and reason’s usage within the season.
I found it weird that mei, a Chinese dragon, barely uses her dragon abilities, just the sword snd dragonkinesis, which is cool but her other abilities would be amazing to see. Gassing dragons can grant wishes, shapeshift and control the water and weather. Since mei already has an arc about accepting herself as part of her family, I think I’d would’ve been
if after meeting Ao Guang, he wouldn’t taught her about her “true potential” when it came to her powers and abilities as a dragon, insulating her to know more about her family and culture. I was mainly thinking that this comics coincided with mei practicing controlling lightning, water or gaining her dragon from in the background of season 3, which couldn’t coincided with her trying to use her new found powers to break free from the fire of samadhi but failing; resulting in her feeling useless, dangerous, ect and have her character arc then be similar to MK’s with trying to gain/ learn her powers. It also would’ve then made sense to have her try and relinquish the fire from her since she knows it’s dangerous and doesn’t want to use it on top of already having a set of abilities that she wants to master.
Given the fact that redson himself was the person who made the samadhi fire and even trained mei in joe to harness and control it I thought it was weird that there wasn’t a scene where they “gave” it back to him since he seems like the best option to have it, plus he’s redeemed in a sense and we don’t need two fire users on the team (oh wait mei never used it again so I guess we do only have one lol). Spitballing but I think they definitely could’ve done more with mei in general, especially in s3

I think season 3 should be a Redson centric season, like subtracting the Samadhi fire failing and leaving a smaller ring inside of him. In season 3 Redson coming with the crew to stop the Lady Bone Demon to get some closure of what she done to his father. Also we can get a plot line of Redson reclaiming the power that gave him so much trouble when he was a kid, just like MK reclaiming Wukongs powers.

I'll say one thing here, the smartie kid episode holds nothing to the plot of season 3 asides giving MK his golden eyes of truth back, and it couldve been a better episode with the same characters.
Its that type of episode that feels it should've been in season one as a slice of life, and it could've been where MK tries to win this game and continues to fail, so Mei drags Wukong, as the others are busy with the TEA, to find an alternative.
And maybe her and Monkey King could've talked about their love for MK, or their differences, or maybe Wukong tried to distance himself at the mention of her ancestors fue to the samadhi fire or him missing them too greatly.
Maybe we get him talking to jer about jer family, and she shows and talks about her dynamic with them, but Wulong feels unsure as Ao Lie was one of his besties(especially since hes a canonical horse girl). And goes out of his way to show that her ancestors should be proud of her or something akin to that.
Idk maybe goldfish demon guy could be a ruse and hilds a grudge against mei's family and underestimates her since she may not be the idea of what he had in mind.
I just do my best to avoid that episode since i feel it doesn't do anything.

VERY late to this video but, as someone who's fav character is Mei, thank you for this. It hurts SO much to see Mei get pushed to the side over and over again when she has an unbelievable amount of potential. It's real salt in the wound when she herself, in seasons 4 and 5, mention wanting to do and BE more, yet they completely ignore the Samadhi Fire and only bring it back momentarily in 5. The potential for her to go through different arcs about how she feels about her role in the group and how she feels about Wukong is there, but squandered SO bad man. I'm sorry but i will never not be insanely pissed and upset about how the fire was given to mei instead of red son, this plot choice in my opinion is a flaw in of itself. They wasted a potential villain-to-redemption arc for him and he ends up feeling more like a side character when he should be more important.
If you disagree with me saying the fire should have been reds, just think for a moment how insanely interesting of a plot that would be, a sort-of-ally suddenly losing his mind and becoming another threat before a redemption, reds redemption has been built up, even subtly, since season one and i fully expected for it to reach its climax and conclusion in season 3 but noooooo they went with giving mei an "ok" arc when she deserved so much more and making red suddenly a good-ish guy

I have so many Mei theory’s that I’m hoping they explore in season 5 mostly her family and relations to the dragon of the east one as her parents have their own dragon form things but Mei doesn’t. The dragon she fights with is Aolie’s dragon form and He is tied to the sword somehow and I want to know more.

Imagine how legendary it would have been if they’d let Mei go all out in battle. If the mere sight of possessed Wukong sent her into a cosmic fiery rage. If they’d dropped everything and battled across the sky with the full power of the samadhi fire with all of reality at stake. Power like that would scare everyone, even the Lady Bone Demon. It would also be cool to see Red Son be the one managing to cam Mei down and stop her from destroying the universe. The plot could basically proceed as normal after that, but it would be an incredible way to raise the stakes and spice up the middle of the s3 special. I had felt that it got kind of boring toward the middle anyway
Something i find annoying about season 3(/2) along with mei 2 was LBD, tbh.
Her motivation was “the World is flawed so i wanna destroy it and make it perfect” which i just never understood because nothing is ever perfect and there has to be flaws somewhere. It feels like such a shallow and Generic motivation as well i’ve heard a thousand times before. + i just didnt lile her personality either, as it felt like she was just set up to be Dark Mysterious and Evil and in the end thats all she really became. It gave some good moments and gave good episodes, but its obviously never good to feel like the main and very serious villian is both dumb and extremely Generic.
+Also we barely Got any episodes without her and so i just started getting really tired of her and watching LMK in general tbh.
Season 3 just felt really Weak in general for me tbh. I dont really mind if anybody likes her and if you do, please do tell me why bc i really really wanna like season 3/2! And no i dont hate the entirety of season 3/2 or anything LBD is in. There was a lot of good Character arcs episodes and development, i just didnt like LBD.
I like her,because she feel like a threat and made me scared,azure and macaque didn't give the same feel,that why I like her lol
The main problem of this show is how short every season is, they don't have enought time to squeeze everything they want to becuse of this format. LBD really shows this problem just by how much she suffered from 140 minute season format. She needed more screen time in my opinion, more backstory and just getting to her mind overall, that way she could be even better. I still liked her though, menacing, smart and powerful character, plus she felt like a threat even more than azure for me

I have a feeling sexism has something to do with these issues involving Mei, with how female characters in media get treated with writing in comparison to male characters, making them sort of feel less important. The same treatment can also apply to fandoms
I feel the primary reason Mei’s arc in s3 failed isn’t about screen time, it’s more about a failure to challenge her role. She’s the Goofy Loud Comedic character, and they were afraid to show her grappling with trauma and fear. They probably worried that giving her another layer would jeopardize her comedy potential in future stories. And personally at this point, Mei has been obnoxious for so long that all I really want is for her screentime to be reduced. Because whenever she isn’t with Red Son she’s so irritating
I really did loke season 3 as they managed to keep Red Son involved, giving him good interaction. Even if in season 4 he got tossed aside.
This show could've definitely used some teen titans touches(13 episode per season,episodes 20-23 minutes/longer,each season dedicated for One character,less hyperactive animation)! Not?
Ive always felt like mei and wukong would always have an interesting dynamic because of how similar mei is to wukongs younger self(Im not saying they are similar in issuses) and the whole samadhi fire couldve really help show it. Side note how the HELL DID MEI LOSE? Youre telling me she has a powerful weapon wanted by both sides because it could beat the lbd and she loses. Why? What benefit does it have?
The part that annoys me honestly is that this could’ve lead to an arc where Mei is scared of a power she has and forcefully holds herself back out of fear of hurting those close to her, similar to MK’s arc in season 5. It’d be a neat change to have the hothead scared of using her powers until she learns(probably through Red Son) that she doesn’t need to be scared. It could make a nice parallel arc to MK and his fear of his own monkey form
She kind of did?? It’s VERY very minimal but we did see when red son made a new samadhi fire she used her brand new sword as a way to channel what’s left of the original fire in her body. It’s nowhere near enough as an arc, but it’s a start that I think lays out groundwork that could lead to great results in season 6. I noticed with both MK and Mei that there were problems hinted at but weren’t yet resolved (No one telling MK that it’s not all is fault and he had to do everything himself anyway, the chaos as the new villain, and Mei’s fear is still there), which makes it feel like it’s all intentional. Maybe even Mei’s poor development in season 3 could’ve been intentional because we obviously know they can develop these characters in meaningful ways and so do they (Although it’s just as likely that they completely flubbed their chance for Mei’s growth). Still, I think it’s good to stay optimistic. It’s small but there’s signs there’s something for her. We just have to wait :).
I wonder why the samadhi fire didn't affect Wukong? In JTTW it was the only 'fire that Sun Wukong wasn't immune to?
(I think I'd like to see Mei being mad after seeing SWK at the temple and attacking him and then MK comes in and trys to stop her because he doesn't want to hurt his mentor and Mei is like, "why are you here MK!?" with a mix of shame, anger at being stopped and is worried for MK! (I am NOT a writer, please forgive me if it's a bit off from the timing of the show or just a bit too cringe)
and then Mei gets sucker punched by Wukong
Monkie kid is a great show though by itself it would be a great show with the sets it is Aaaaaaaa btw the shot when mai uses her dragon on macaque and mk it it is great the chills for me for no reason
I think Mei's training could have been important if they hadn't made the fire null and void after the season 3 special. We never see it in s4 and that is disappointing to me because it makes it feel as tho it never had meaning in the first place, in season 3 it was a mcguffin to drive the story along and once aquired it was basically forgotten about as a necessary part to defeat LBD and disappears right after her defeat

This show terribly need longer duration, but if they can't, they need more episodes quota. But, I also know this will be expense for the show's overal animation.

I've talked to someone about this before and my point still stands, the biggest flaw of LMK is the lack of time the show has to flesh out the world and its characters. This is just my opinion, but I feel like if it had more time to nurture the story, it could've been the new ATLA in terms of popularity and depth, or at least somewhere close to it. Like no joke, it has an interesting concept, great characters, lore that can be explored more because it has an existing source to get inspired from, this show is already great, but it could've been AMAZING. But this is just my opinion so we can agree to disagree
Season 3 last few episodes and the s3 special is monkie kidd's best shit in my opinion so i wouldn't want a thing to change ong.
I would have put the focus on Mei though season three and how being the fourth ring effects her. Also do we have a release date for season five?

This is why I think the Samadhi Fire should've stayed as Red Son's power (I also think he should've joined the main cast). That way the Samadhi Fire might've retained some presence beyond season 3 instead of transforming to Mei's green and never being mentioned again. The animators could've shifted Red Son's fire pallet from oranges to the Samadhi Fire's dark reds.
Also, I think Mk should've been the one to be possessed by the Lady Bone Demon in order for Mei to have a reason not to use the Samadhi Fire to it's full potential. That way instead of Mei failing to use one of the universe's strongest weapons, it's her unable to destroy her best friend. Plus, with Mk out of the picture, it would've opened up room for other characters as well as show what they would do when Mk isn't around.
As for Mei's development, I think Mei should've had some kind of mentor (like her uncle) to help with her development as well as develop her swordsmanship and Dragon Powers so she has more versatility like Mk. Heck, maybe even give her an actual dragon form instead of that hologram to match Mk getting his monkey form (and War Form when fighting Azure).
I agree with all of this but tbh I feel like the Fire should’ve went to redson in the first place, don’t get my wrong I love mei but I feel like she doesn’t even need it 😭 + SHE DOSENT EVEN USE IT IN SEASON 4 but if they kept redson a villain and gave him the fire omg it would’ve been amazing

Even when I watched season three I didn’t like the direction they took with the samadhi fire, it has too many plot holes and iffy explanations or me to fully be on board with how it was used.
A thing that really bothers me is that in season four Mei said that they couldn't just be sitting meditating or whatever, when she already learned that last season!

Season 4 and 5 are the best seasons by far. Personally i dont hate season three but its not my favourite. Season 1 and 2 arent the best but they are what started the show. Everything i just said was in my opinion. Pls dont roast me

My biggest gripe with the show is how there is ZERO representation of any group. There's no racial minorities, gays, transgenders, fats, queers, xens, and the list goes on. They never even asked a single person what their pronouns were.
