I had never previously known of this author before finding your channel, and I love his stories - I suppose I could actually find them to read for myself...but who wants to do that when I can listen to your perfect performances (and crochet cat blankies at the same time)! LOL 👏👏👏! Loved it Simon! It's so funny that in spite of whatever else is going on, he's preoccupied with his stomach. You do such a remarkable job of distinguishing voices between characters. And I too, very much like the intro music; it sets the mood for the whole story. You're the best and I adore you! ❤

    Oh I'm so happy to see this one, to notice it today! It was one of the two or three you uploaded when I had covid and I just couldn't get my head around even the simplest plot I guess it's the clearest way to explain it.
    I've heard~and now completely understand!~ that covid can be a bit of a different experience for different people. I would absolutely have to agree that, to date, it's a very individual thing. Four family members of mine including myself, all had it at roughly the same time, in two households, and we all had a substantially different illness, which all seemed to have different phases . One of my issues was for several days, being simply unable to follow a story or even someone talking to me and found I didn't have the energy to even care. That was pretty bad I have to say. If there's such a thing as covid depression, I had it for sure, in the middle there for a while
    I'm just so grateful that that part is over and I am what I can only think of as pretty much myself again, and I'm so happy you were here for me on the other side. You do so much for your audience, so much you probably never anticipated the extent of it, or could have done..
    Thank you again for being here and doing what you do, because it's a unique gift you've got there, and that you share it as you do, is very wonderful.

    Oh what an excellent story. It has all my favorite attributes. An amateur detective, a railroad mystery, stolen documents, diplomatic crisis and foreign intrigue topped off with an unexpected twist and impeccably performed. The background information adds a lot to the story. I knw the author from his novels but didn't know about his earlier short stories. I hope you do another one for us.😊😊

    Hmm, this was published in December 1905. Doyle's Adventure of the Second Stain was published in December 1904. I think Whitechurch would get the Victorian equivalent of a UA-cam strike.

    • @BitesizedAudio
      @BitesizedAudio  2 роки тому

      Ha! Yes, fair point... although it might be argued that Doyle had already copied himself with the Second Stain, as it was also his second story about a stolen government document, after The Naval Treaty in 1893. And of course there was Poe's 'The Purloined Letter' (1844) which predates them all...

    Excellent narrative. Good story. Though I find it just a hair fabricated. Too many discrepancies. I just happened to work voluntarily for Naval Intelligence for a very short time. Also I took a few semesters of psychology in college and a US Government crash course of the same. Since you made no reference of what time of the twentieth century I'm assuming early nineteen hundreds. This was far to simple and his guards were incompetent fools. Either way very entertaining read.

    • @BitesizedAudio
      @BitesizedAudio  2 роки тому

      Thank you for your comment Ernest, much appreciated. In terms of the date of the story, it was published in 1905 (where I'm able to find it, I put the original publication details in the video description) but of course in the narrative it says that the events happened some years earlier and belong to the realm of obsolete diplomatic crises, so perhaps an approximate date would be early 1890s?

    • @BitesizedAudio
      @BitesizedAudio  2 роки тому

      Quite so! I believe that the dangers of smoking weren't really understood until the 1950s, and even then it took some decades for it to be widely understood by the public. Prior to that smoking was even prescribed as a health benefit/medication sometimes!

      @BitesizedAudio  2 роки тому +1

      I'm very sorry to know that. I do strive to find the least jarring music I can within the limits of the UA-cam creator library, usually something fairly quiet and classical in style, but reasonably appropriate for the particular story where possible. I don't underscore the story itself, I'm just using musical interludes to separate the introductions from the narratives. If you'd prefer to listen to the stories unadorned by any music you can find the original recordings on my Bandcamp page: bitesizedaudio.bandcamp.com
