Still miss last year, nothing like seeing KIDS helping dad harvest Watermelons.. I LOVE how they were so involved, OH And when you split that Watermelon and gave it to the ducks? that was the coolest thing ever, and I live in Georgia.. who knew ducks will polish off a watermelon in 5 seconds? Nobody here, I've replayed it and shared it with friends.. they were just as shocked as I was!!!
Hi, love your channel. Wondering if you ever consider thinning your watermelons/reducing the fruit on the theory that it will concentrate the sugars more? Maybe not an issue down where you are, though...I'm up in Connecticut.
My Cracker Jack’s won’t take. I planted them in the right ratio with seeded melons but they’ll form melons, they’ll get somewhere between the size of a golf ball and baseball and then shrivel up and die off. Guessing I’m just unlucky with the pollination
I grew Yellow Doll this year and they've been super productive. My best melon grow out yet. Planted 6 plants and have already harvested 20 melons with plenty more to come
I waited 10 days on my first orange crisp after the tendril died then took it off the vine and it was my best watermelon so far the season. F1 Triple Baby was a close second with Sangria.
YUM! Watermelon and tomato tests are the best. Did a Kroger seedless today which wasn't bad. I did notice they had darker colors ones as well, which may be worth investigating. Nursery by me will have yellows in another 2 months. Better than Gatorade people. I've heard water affects their taste. I think it did last year on my tomatoes. It was a wet year last year. This year, maybe not so much. Maybe.
I agree. If the plant/fruit is water logged, the taste will be, too. If possible, I try to deny my beefsteak tomatoes water for 1 to 2 days before picking, to help concentrate the sugars.
I aways heard that watermelons won’t ripen anymore once they are picked. Is that true? I have never bought a watermelon at the store that is worth eating. Homegrown is the only way!
We grew Summer Breeze seedless watermelon this year. The plants are great, but Zero watermelon or flowers. Very odd. Any ideas. We have 70 seeded plants giving bookoos of watermelon.
My first few watermelon last year came out perfect I waited a few extra days to pick but the last 5 or 6 I harvested the tendril never dried up and a couple of them were over ripe the others were perfect. I'm new to successfully growing watermelon, I've been using solar mulch basically brown plastic not sure if black plastic would be as successful but don't see why it wouldn't but I'm not chancing it lol. I tried for several years and they just didn't do well without the mulch, I live in the Pacific Northwest and most areas it doesn't do well but I think I figured out the secret for my area they even look better this year, won't harvest until late August.
I’m growing some for my granddaughter but I’m trying really hard to like the taste of watermelon. I’ve never been a big fan of it but maybe home grown will change my mind. We shall see.
All you have to do is wait until you can pop the stem off without cutting. Thats the only way to know when it is 100% ripe. You should never have to cut a watermelon stem.
Canteloupe will pop off on its own when rip or with the slightest of pressure. As far as watermelon pop thestem with your finger. Never cut a watermelon stem
If you lay the watermelon flat on the ground, take a piece of straw from a whisk broom and lay it on top of the watermelon, if it spins in circles on top of the melon, IT'S RIPE!
An older gentleman just told me this a couple of days ago, I thought he was just messing with me. At this point I’m willing to try anything though. We have picked five melons, and there was one good one out of the bunch, but all of them crack wide open as soon as you stick the knife in and they are not worth a flip !!
@@jericox1813 Thats an old wives tale. Reach down with your finger and see if the stem will pop off. If you have to cut the stem its still ripening. Its really that simple. Think a canteloupeand how the self pop off the vine or the slightest of pressure. A watermelon will need decent pressure but you will know if it will pop off in jst a couple of attempts
Have harvested Yellow Doll and Chou Cheh Red watermelon in the last week. Not much beats a fresh watermelon. And yes, both of mine could have used a couple more days in the field too.
On other videos, he explains that when you buy a packet of "seedless" watermelon, it should come with a second variety to plant as a pollinator. However, the varieties often automatically included often do not taste good. So instead of having some fruits he would have to discard, he chose a different seeded variety that actually does taste good to act as pollinator. That way everything he grows will be worthy of eating.

Have you ever picked some a little past due? Where they are just a little bit grainy? In bigger gardens, it is hard to keep an eye on all of them LOL
Yeah they get grainy if they're overripe.

Yeah that sounds like you may not have enough pollinators buzzing around. I haven't seen that happen with any of mine over the years.

Good to hear. I'm hoping to get one like that soon!

I think they do ripen a little after picking.
I just picked my first watermelon today. Ate it 5 minutes ago. Very sweet. Sangria.
❤❤❤
When the bottom of a sangria turns yellow its ready, sweet sweet sweet.

That's odd. Not sure what would cause them not to flower.

What about cantaloupe how do you tell
I grow the ones that just separate from the vine. But I've grown banana cantaloupe where you just have to kneel down and smell them.

Would love to hear how you grill your wings on the weber. Seasoned or BBQ sauce?
Seasoned, slow-cooked with indirect heat for a couple hours, then sauced at the end to give a nice little caramelized crust on them.
@@LazyDogFarm YUMMO 😊

Never cut the stem. The way to tell if it is ripe is reach down and snap off the stem (with one finger). If it doesnt snap off, Its still ripening.
It my first year successfully growing watermelon in my raised beds we got 4 melon fruits just have to wait for them to ripen.
It's time, it's melon time!
I dont understand, what is the pollinator? They are all watermelons. Is it because other two can't polinate?
Seedless watermelon need a seeded watermelon to pollinate. If you plant only seedless watermelon, you will get nothing.

Sugar Baby or a Black Diamond. It's the texture a refined gentleman enjoys.😅
Yummy watermelon 🍉
You may not be able to grow Jack-o’-lanterns for Halloween but you can harvest ripe watermelons 🍉 on the 4th of July😊!
Klaus
It's a give and take for sure.
Ummmm Ummmm
