    La Motta said of Cerdan that he was the best boxer sent by Europe. Cerdan's nickname was the "bomber".
    In France, we consider him the best champion we have ever had at this time.
    Cerdan should have fought La Motta when an air crash put an end to his revenge.
    I respectfully salute the memory of these two great champions.

    Great respect shown by LaMotta. Instead of celebrating the greatest achievement of his professional life and realizing a dream come true, he goes over and grabs Cerdan,puts his arm around him and raises Cerdans fist in the air and walks around the ring with him.This was back in a day where champions fought and acted like true champions and real men, unlike the spoiled little bitches of the last 20 yrs who pretend theyre so bad-hello Roy Jones Jr. You could never dream of being MC&JL's caliber

    Cerdan coul'nt use his left arm because injured at start.
    Revenge had to be current september ...
    Cerdan 's son said on day :
    "Marciano saw Cerdan's training then Marciano told La motta 'Don't fight again Cerdan ! He will kill you !!!' "
    The revenge was fight was carried forward.
    Cerdan never come because his plane crashed.

      Nonsense !! Anyone can see what clearly happened here ... Jake was too strong for Cerdan ... Jake pounded Cerdan in sporadic double-handed barrages from Round 1 ... I've seen this fight in its entirety in another viewing ... Jake knocked down Cerdan in the 1st round BUT IT DID NOT DAMAGE CERDAN'S LEFT SHOULDER ... Cerdan still fired his left up through Round 5 but from Round 6, Cerdan was unable to use his left ... You know why ?? Because as you can clearly see from this clip itself, Jake kept pounding away at Cerdan's left arm and shoulder from Round 1 onward and that is what disabled Cerdan from using his left arm ... This video clip alone could be viewed a 100 times and anyone can see this ... Although these clips are only partial and seem to have edited out some the sharp lefts that Cerdan was throwing upto the 5th round ...Both LaMotta and Cerdan were rough close contact brawlers and were right-handed sluggers.. .All due respect to Marcel Cerdan but Jake LaMotta was too strong for him ... Remember what LaMotta did to Bob Satterfield ...? One of the hardest hitting natural light heavyweights in the history of boxing (who mostly fought as a heavyweight). .. LaMotta absorbed everything Satterfield landed and then opened up in Round 7 to pound Satterfield to near unconsciousness and had Big Bad "Bombardier" Bob hanging over the ropes ...

    Just watched an hour special on Marcel Cerdans life on a french TV station. Lamotta also told me in person, many years ago about his scheduled fight with Cerdan, the one they never had because of the plane crash. Would love to know how to send a mail to Lamotta for his story which for me, made this hour special a moving experience. MH

    From what I see from the film, LaMotta was all over Cerdan. Cerdan left his left arm out straight under LaMotta's right armpit. When LaMotta threw a left hook he dropped his right shoulder trapping Cerdans left arm against Jake's right side. As Jake pivoted to the right to follow through on his left hook, Cerdan was pulled off balance.
    As far as Cerdan would have beat Jake if this didn't happen, that's all just talk. Only FACT is Jake won this fight.
    Two Great Fighters.

    My point is that nobody really gives LaMotta credit for beating Cerdan but the fact of the matter is that even before the shoulder seperation LaMotta dominated Cerdan in the first round and jumped all over him. He deserves credit for that. I've never seen film of anybody bossing Cerdan like that for ANY amount of time.

    Poor Cerdan; because of his rendered useless left shoulder all he could do was plod forward, try to stay close to LaMotta, and chop him with right hands. LaMotta is too good for that, but Cerdan had no choice. I can't imagine the pain Cerdan was going through but he fought an animal like LaMotta for 9 grueling rounds getting hit on that shoulder and everywhere else. Great win and fight by Jake. Two legends in every sense of the word. By the way, Jake still took some damn good shots from Marcel.

    Cerdan is my favorite fighter of all-time. He was a true wonderwall of pugilistic genius. I think he wouldve beaten LaMotta had he not suffered the shoulder injury in round one. I also feel, without the slightest bit of hesitation, that Cerdan wouldve won the rematch with LaMotta and wouldve faired even better in a series with Robinson than LaMotta did. That being said, as I watch this video, to LaMotta's credit, he clearly shook Cerdan prior to hurling Cerdan to the floor. We must give credit.

    Good assessment. Both fighters were brawlers 100%. LaMotta was the tougher fighter & better chin. He didn't hit you as hard each time. But those clean hooks that he does land look like they're from a Heavyweight.
    He wasn't fast, he wasn't smooth. But he had impeccable timing, or else he never could last even with that chin against a boxer like Sugar Ray Robinson.
    LaMotta's career & life is a testament to the human spirit. There hasn't been a man in the ring as tough as him.

  • @frankkrogh7791
    @frankkrogh7791 6 років тому +3

    I don't doubt that Cerdan strained his shoulder, but I've seen separated shoulders in football, and there's no way he could have gone 9 rounds with that. Especially, when in some rounds after his fall, I see him throwing combinations at LaMotta with both hands. I think he wanted to save face, as he realized he might even get Ko'd. I think Cerdan was overrated anyway.

I wrestled most of my life since 6 years old, and watch MMA often and cringe at the naively confident predictions-- when so many ways to win or lose is a fraction of a second away. Maybe Cerdan was just biding his time in the first round in hopes that LaMotta would punch himself out. It was the only legitimate round in the fight because Cerdan fell and dislocated his left shoulder and could only strike with his right hand the rest of the way. Having said that LaMotta won that round big time.

  • @TheChoice264

    @marcxopoco LaMotta was not too strong or in too good of condition for Cerdan. Cerdan was a very strong and well conditioned middleweight in his own right. Cerdan couldnt hurt LaMotta with his right hand because he was a one armed fighter.LaMotta knew he only needed to worry about the right hand, therefore he saw it coming all. night. Cerdan had a helluva left hook as well,but couldnt use it.Since Cerdan didnt have a two-fisted attack,he wasnt able to catch LaMotta with a punch LaMotta didnt see

    He hurt Cerdan, no doubt, but it was obvious Cerdan's left was useless. It would've been a LOT closer if Marcel hadn't been injured. LaMotta still might've won, but it's not a sure thing at all. Both guys were impossibly tough and strong. Cerdan's skills were better but LaMotta's chin was made of granite and the dude could punch. Personally, I'd give the edge to Cerdan. But both were great.

    Now that I finally saw this film i can see that the "experts' weren't all that great at describing the fight. I heard and read that La Motta "wrestled" Cerdan to the floor; here it's obvious that La Motta was throwing Cerdan off of a tie-up that La Motta didn't like. Cerdan tangled up and flopped down hard. On paper Cerdan had the cred for sure, but in fighting you never know until the two styles actually clash. La Motta looked like he was hurting him in the 1st, Cerdan hanging on...

  • @pjtheory
    @pjtheory 5 років тому +5

    Cerdan couldn't hold a candle to LaMotta's level of competition. Cerdan padded his record by fighting mostly European middleweights whereas Lamotta fought every legitimate welterweight and middleweight on the planet. It's also important to note that Cerdan's greatest victory was against an over the hill Tony Zale. LaMotta's greatest victory? He became the first boxer to defeat Sugar Ray Robinson and he gave Robinson hell in 5 other fights. Despite being a light puncher, LaMotta was able to succeed because he had a varied skill set and his intangibles were off the charts. He was a busy fighter, terrific body puncher, underrated defensive fighter, pesky jab, and one of the best chins in boxing history.

    @abbeykroeter Yes,without a doubt,LaMotta took the 1st round,and oddly,i think he even may have hurt Cerdan,which allowed LaMotta to throw Cerdan off balance,and to the ground. Normally Cerdan comes out smokin like LaMotta. But in Boxing,you don't box a boxer and you dont brawl a brawler. I think,Cerdan,knowing he had the superior skills,though a brawler in his own right,opted to box LaMotta in the 1st round to get a feel,and it ultimately cost him,allowing LaMotta to get a jump on him.

    en visionnant au ralenti le premier round on voit bien que la motta fait une sorte de prise de judo pour mettre cerdan a terre et c'est là que cerdan se blesse a l'épaule gauche et le match est fini pour lui hélas car il doit faire son combat avec uniquement le droit alors que son gauche est sa bombe ....

    LaMotta too strong, in too good condition, and the wrong style for Cerdan.
    Cerdan lands his best right hand at 2:30 or so, and what does LaMotta do? Just hits him back.
    Cerdan's best punch (right hand) wasn't enough to hurt LaMotta.

    Truly sad about Marcel Cerdan, one of the greatest European boxers to ever punch. But to people who say, 'Cerdan's arm was hurt, it wasn't a fair fight!' Listen once the gloves are checked and laced, you enter the ring, and whatever happens happens.
    A damn shame that tragedy interfered with the rematch.

    How does a fight end "dramatically" when a fighter doesn't answer the bell? A KO or TKO would be far more dramatic.

    He was pushed over and injured. But that isn't a dislocated shoulder. Tough guys and tough fighters but not of today's standards. Cerdan had problems against some welters and I never understood why he suddenly got pushed up to Middle and became champion. Here he is being hit by nonsense. Where the guy's defence? Where is his footwork? Where is his clinching? This is club fighting.

    Good God ferocious were fighters back then.
    Nowadays boxers are better trained, better conditioned, fitter, more skilful, agile and better footwork but not half the guile of these guys. Only an injury would stop these guys. The thought of their corners throwing in the towel, or the RSC, simply didn’t enter the equation. You just got up and got on with it, and gave it your all. And pro boxers had 8-14 fights per yr too, weren’t as protected as today, and if they lost it wouldn’t be the end of the world for them - they’d be back the next day. Funny how these guys could go 15 rounds and still want more.
    Putting us all to shame!

      I agree totally just one part I don't agree with the boxers nowadays have better footwork and are better conditioned but they are definitely not more skilful Sugar Ray Robinson and Jake Lamotta would destroy nowadays Middleweights and Light Heavyweights tbh they were amazing.

      You guys are completely wrong, boxers are much better trained nowadays and the fame of this sport gives the possibility to find the best athletes on Earth. You are for sure not even close to the level of nowadays professional boxers and obviously you have no idea how tough it is to be in the top 10 of boxing today.
      The fact that back then fighters fought for 15 rounds didn't make them more tough but is a source of problems related to injuries and brain damage.
      The only fact that some people like you pretend to know boxing so good to say that back then boxers were more tough is just because there are no stats and no way to quantify this. The level just becomes higher with time and it's a fact for every sport. Deal with it.

      Godkiller08 thats all bullshit. boxing was huge back then a psychology plays a huge role in the sport. they were tough as hell back then and from rough backgrounds. the same way a tough kid from mexico with limited ability can still go a long way today in modern boxing. they were masters of their craft back then and had far fewer distractions. cant believe you discredited all the great fighters from other eras based on 0 facts and pure bias. in fact there are boxers from the 70s that came back and won titles in the 90s. you got guys like Hopkins who debuted in the late 80s and are winning titles still to this day at 50 years of age. roberto Duran was winning titles decades out of his prime and barely in shape. it shows how little you know of the sport and have likely never stepped in a ring. do you know that half the olympic records haven't even been broken since the 80s, some even the 60s?. boxing is definently not a sport that has improved with time - in fact the best boxers today come from camps that are old school and keep all these fake modern conditioning clowns away. Floyd mayweather never touches weights and he chops wood for conditioning. 48-0. you are ridiculing the "old ways" but the old ways are tested and true, boxing is a very old sport with a lot of years behind it - some kids out of college aren't going to know better then an 80 year old trainer whos raised over 20 world champions and has sat ringside for 1000s of pro fights. just search duran sparring sergio mora. 67 years old and a car crash later, he still looks better then mora in the ring. thats old school skills

    • @Godkiller08
      @Godkiller08 7 років тому +1

      Why do you think I am questioning the fact that old school training is bad ? I never said such a thing. Sportsmen, nutritionists and trainers just took the best of old school training making it better by mixing it with new techniques and routines that proved to be better on a scientific fact.
      I agree that you become much more tough in boxing when you already have a tough life, and i'm not saying that lifting weights makes a you a better boxer. And trust me, i stepped in a ring.
      You are completely discarding the fact that the health of a boxer is incredibly important and that the "old school techniques" you're talking about like getting punched in the face voluntarily will make things worse and get you in trouble in the future, and the fact that professional sport overall has improved a lot in the last decade thanks to science.
      You can have old skills as much as you want, you won't last long in a boxing career if you are not precautious about your health. I completely respect the boxers of the 70s and the 80s and I agree that most of them today are pussies, but stop glorifying old school boxing when Hopkins and others could last longer than boxers before because they had trainers to keep them in shape, and not in a old school way.
      Time gives people the ability to understand more things about the sport, to perfect their style, and even if they are legends in the past that won't be surpassed so easily, I still say that today's boxing is maybe less tougher, but much more technical and skilled today. Just look at how boxers fought back then, and it's obvious to see how toughness was important because they weren't aware of the problems of getting hit a lot, and therefore didn't work the movements and the defense as much as today.
      Also, 80 years old trainer knows much more than a kid because he has experience, not because he knows the "old school" techniques. And it some trainers are not as good now because they don't question themselves, don't appreciate the new techniques and keep teaching these old school skills like it's the only way to win in boxing. Cuban boxing is incredibly good today and doesn't look like 70-80s boxing at all.

      Blaast dude you are completely wrong, and its understandable i use to think the same thing but the old school era was incredibly more skillful and ill give you concrete examples why and examples of why today is not.

    @rediculousnicholas I wouldnt call this a crush by any means. You need to watch more fights if you call this a crush. The only crush here seems to be the one you have on LaMotta. Cerdan went to war on LaMotta using one arm, and was backing LaMotta up and giving and taking. The difference maker here is LaMotta had the luxury of fighting with 2 hands, Cerdan only could use one. Cerdans left shoulder was dislocated in round 1 after LaMotta threw him down. Cerdan wins the rematch 10-5.

  • @TheChoice264
    @TheChoice264 12 років тому

    @marcxopoco Had Cerdan been able to attack the way he was accustomed to and capable of, with two good arms,instead of one, then he couldve hurt LaMotta. Believe that. Cerdan was one of boxings great punchers and artist's. Cerdan wouldve won the rematch and the rubber match IMO

    Vous saviez? Et cela seule les marocains le savent, que Marcel cerdan est marocain d’origine et non espagnol!!!! Véridique seulement en 40 là racisme était maître et avoir un nom français t’ouvrait plus de porte qu’un nom comme moustapha larbi, et dire qu’il y a encore des gogos qui croient qu’il est d’origine espagnole de nationalité française, regardez le bien

      I also suspect Cerdan was better but there's no way to know. This fight reminds me of Whitaker vs James McGirt. Mcgirt was whupping Whitaker until his shoulder(rotator cuff) gave out.
