- This method will work on some timbers, please try it first.... I like this method as its easy, there is no nasty smell and it gives wood sort of natural patina....

Made the cherry wood look like chestnut
Oh, I like this information! I will be using this in the near future.
My wife and I built our house about sixteen years ago and chose cherry for our cupboards. I had so little understanding of wood back then, but the cabinet maker showed us samples of aged cherry and it was an easy decision. They look very rich today and the inside of the doors are much lighter than the surfaces exposed to light.
Aaaa those cupboards are I'm sure extremely nice.... Try it and let me know the results....

I have two 10” pieces of cherry cut and ready to make plates or platters. I thought the wood needed some decoration to make it more interesting but I think this darkening might be enough.
I have used vinegar and rust before to make a solution to darken wood, but the baking soda and water is more subtle. Very nice.
This baking soda may not work on other woods so test it out 😀.

Beautiful pieces, I do like the aged one better (maybe that's because I'm an aged one too). Was wondering though, if this treatment only works on woods with tannins?

Great video, as we've come to expect.
I've done this with a lye solution . Spoons, bowls, vases. An old technique that finishers used to employ. Works instantly. Baking soda is probably safer.
I also use iron acetate for oak. Sometimes fuming with ammonia for a different color and to make the medulary rays pop. And ferric nitrate and heat for maple with figure.
I never dye stain wood except for occasional black. But I love these aging processes which look natural and are permanent.
Haven't found anything yet to age pear. We have tons of Bradford pear in the area. Now a weed tree. Wonderful for turning. Ages to a beautiful reddish brown. But I haven't found any way to accelerate that process.

So smoothe (and fast...) on the bowl finish cuts...I am amazed everytime! I personally prefer the aged one without a doubt! I am colour blind and the darker one is way more pleasant for me! Have a nice week dear Tomislav!

A very similar trick: fill a bucket with extremely salty water (heat water, keep adding salt and stir it until the salt won't dissolve anymore), immerse the wood in the water for a week, maybe two weeks (depends on the wood), and the wood will bleach white like driftwood on a beach. Quality of resulting wood isn't too great, but it does look neat.
That is cool tehnique, there are few of those kind of stuff and its worth testing ☺️
You can buy a two part commercial product called wood bleach that is not so destructive. I get mine in a hardware store but a paint store may also carry it.

Nice bowls! I like the shape. As the colors shift due to UV exposure, I would like to see them again. I'm curios what the baking soda treatment does to the color of the bowl compared to the untreated one. If I color a bowl, I dont use straight dye as it fades with UV exposure. I add some pigment to boost color but not enough to muddy the grain. I've had good luck with that. But would prefer to use the natural properties of the wood as you've done in this video. Thanks again for sharing.

Thanks for the video, Tomislav. Interesting technique. Can't say I'm a fan of the result. As cherry ages, it takes on a reddish color. This technique turns it brown, more like chestnut. Not unattractive, just not cherry.

I’ve used vinegar and steel wool mixture to ebonize the wood. I think it would work well for the inside of a hollow form. Thanks.
Steel and vinegar works great, using it as well .... This is something that I wanna try for long time ☺️

I'm going to try that! I have been putting my cherry pieces in the sun to hasten UV darkening, but the baking soda makes a different color compared to UV. I like it.
Its more darker then UV but it has its charm.... Thank you for watching 🤗

I would try again but with let say 3dl of water and a table spoon of soda, then try with more baking soda to see if there is any differents.... Although I think it won't make to much of the differnce but try it ... ☺️
