There's a saying in the Bible that you shouldn't throw your pearls before swine - ie not everyone will understand the value of what you do. The 99.9% of us who do, are very grateful for the inspiration you provide, as well as all the learnings we derive from watching you 😊 Keep on doing it! It's great 👍

Catherine, I really enjoy watching your UA-cam videos and I've learnt many sewing techniques that I wasn't aware of. Ignore the silly comments! I've up cycled coffee years and there is something so satisfying in making something from clothes you wouldn't wear because of 'not my style'. Keep making the videos, I always look forward to them! Love what you do! People need to expand their knowledge of what’s going on in our world, especially with recycling. Fortunately well-loved clothing is getting more attention.

It's like asking a gardener, "Why are you planting potatoes when you can buy a 5# bag at the grocery store for $1.99?" Every person who gets off the consumer treadmill makes a difference. You are providing the motivation, information and skill (FREE, no less!), enabling people to become more self-sufficient, creative and thoughtful. I love watching your videos and have gained so much confidence and skill through them. Zero-waste in the closet!

Hi Catherine, I’m sorry you received unkind and unhelpful comments. What you provide for your audience is valuable beyond words. We learn so much from you, both in your successes and your challenges. I often feel like I’m sitting in your sewing studio, visiting with you, as you figure out your next fix! I can’t even begin to tell you how your videos have impacted my sewing! I LOVE recycling of any kind, but am not a trained seamstress. You gave me the courage and inspiration to try any alterations an try and try again if my end product is less then desirable. I’m so proud of the few items I’ve recycled so far, and have enjoyed the process immensely. I always think “ what would Catherine do ? “ anytime I’m floundering…thank you thank you so much for sharing your wealth of experience with us through your love and passion for what u do. ❤❤❤

Catherine, when I found your channel quite by accident, I was thrilled. I thought, "there's someone else out there like me??!" I had just finished turning a too-long & too-large skirt with godets at the hem that I'd thrifted (because I LOVED the fabric) into a beautiful blouse with full bell sleeves from the flouncy godets. I love doing this kind of thing! Nice fabric in pretty prints is becoming hard to find locally. I have a few tried and true patterns that I use over and over, changing this or that. I've sewed my own clothes for longer than you've been alive, but I learn so many things from you! Keep up the good work!! Thank you. ❤

I've used thrift stores for a lot of projects. But, it's watching channels like yours, Catherine that has opened my mind. I used to sew clothes when I was kid -- teenager back in the caveman days. But, in my adult life, I quilt. Watching your channel gave me the ideas (and the confidence) to try new things. For instance: I'm 70yo and have battled skin cancer most of my life including a melanoma over 40 years ago. Living in AZ creates challenges on how to successfully stay out of the sun. I am now looking for coordinating long sleeve t-shirts and adding them to my favorite short sleeve shirts so I can keep my arms covered. I'll figure out what to do with the rest of the shirts. Maybe make t-shirt yarn and teach nieces how to "hand knit." Prior to watching your channel I would have just given my old favorites away. I'm also looking for fabric for quilting in thrift stores. Just looking at the stock in a different light gives way to whole new ideas. Loved your episode on alternative use for drop clothes. Our church had murals painted on them. Keep the ideas coming. You are sparking old brain cells back to life! Enjoy the summer.

I would like to say that you have freed me to restyle my clothes, take a deep breath, and dive into a new way of sewing something.
I have thrifted most of my life and have found clothes that I love. Sometimes, they just need a quick tweak, but some have good bones and need a bigger tweak!
But you have pushed me past my comfort zone, and I thank you sooo much!

I don't usually comment and have watched your videos with a feeling of encouragement myself to upcycle and re-use some of my own clothing and thrifted clothing😀 as well. I retired and rather than get rid of all of my work clothes, I changed and upcycled a lot of them to suit my much more casual lifestyle. Those who make those type of comments seem to me to be someone hiding behind a keyboard with nothing better to do than spew their unhappiness on to others. They're really not here to learn or find value in what you do - they only like to criticize. Keep doing what you do and really just disregard those comments - they really don't deserve your valuable time and attention. Also, btw, when my sister was visiting over Christmas, we watched a bunch of your videos and she was hooked! Thank you for your efforts and keep on going!

Dear Catherine, I just have to say, I love your videos! I agree with every reason why to thrift and upcycle. In the end of a project, you have something both tailored and one of a kind. What's not to love about that? It's still cheaper to buy thrifted if you are only into natural fibers such as linen and silk. I know I can't just go out and buy a silk dress or skirt on my budget. I look at fast fashion in stores and online. The majority of it is synthetic! Which is even harder on the environment. I don't want to pay the price of linen for polyester!

I whole heartedly agree, Catherine! Mending and repurposing make me feel like a millionaire. I will let items that need mending or altering pile up and then spend an afternoon or a day fixing them. At the end of the day I've calculated that I've saved myself about $200-$300 because I didn't go out and buy something new that was easy to fix. Throwing out a pair of pants because it needs a new button or re-hemmed is shameful! I also love your creativity and have been inspired to redesign my own wardrobe. It really is fun! The people who left the “buy your size” comments missed the point. You don’t always get your size at the thrift store, so you have to get creative. Catherine, as a fellow Canadian I love your channel. I worked in high end ladies retail in southern Ontario for many years that also came with a high price tag. In 1993, when Value Village became a viable shopping experience in my city I became hooked on thrifting. Since then I have hardly bought anything brand new, I adore thrifting and I am more apt to find some fashion find that I love than I would ever find in ready to wear, at full price. Keep on putting out your sustainable content. It is valuable. ❤️🇨🇦

I appreciate what you do, Catherine, and love your videos. To help illustrate some of your points: I was given a nice cotton caftan (used). I thought I would wear it as lounge wear. But I really don't wear caftan styles as lounge wear -- I much prefer pants and tops. But I really liked the style of this caftan -- and it hit me that it would make a great loose fitting top. So with just a little measuring, a quick cut and hemming I have a new top that I'll be glad to wear with a number of different jeans, leggings or other pants. When I finished I looked at it and said to myself: There's a $35.00 top with hardly any effort. Upcycling just makes so much sense. Thanks Catherine for all your great content - enjoyable and instructive.

I always love turning something kinda bland, into a garment that I can't wait to wear. The creative process is ALWAYS soo much fun. Thank you soo much, Catherine. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😘

It is a pleasure to listen to your rant! If you can call it that. You were very polite to people who were very rude and those of us who understand what you’re doing and thank you for sharing it with us. Don’t understand those people either. I have a friend who is a great sewer. She will adapt new items of clothing but never buys from thrift stores and adjust clothing. You have instilled in me the need to do what you are doing though I have not sewed in 40 years, never designed, and will be learning from scratch again. I have started my sewing journey with a learning book for my grandson as he reaches an age where he must learn how to zipper his coat, tie his shoes, buckle his belt do up buttons as well as his alphabet, his numbers and how to manipulate the same. I am doing this while I have very little space. Come September I am all ahead go. I have friends who get out their sewing machine every time they need to do a project and then put it away and put everything away with it. I am a person where if it’s out of sight it’s out of mind so need to keep my things visual. By September I will have converted my guest room into a sewing room with a Murphy’ bed for guest so I can leave things out and work on them as and when I can.
You are so loved and appreciated by us all so please keep going!!! Thank you!

I used to be one of those who dragged out my machine and all the notions when I needed to alter an item. With encouragement from Catherine's channel I have bought a serger (a long time dream) and set it up with my old Singer in a spare bedroom. I bought an organizer for all my gear and I am so happy. Have fun Deborah.

I get it! I can’t tell you how many times I have bought clothes off the rack only to discover that I have sew buttons on or restitch a hem. I bought a pricey cardigan that I had to remove one of the d ring closures because it had been sewn on incorrectly. Lesson learned, I sew, using thrifted materials such as curtains, sheets, and anything that catches my eye. I have made jackets, tops, skirts, etc. and received many compliments. Thank you for what you do and sharing with us. I have learned a lot from you.

Even if my project doesn't turn out wearable (which hasn't happened as much as I thought it would)n I still feel like I improved my skill. Thank you , and PLEASE keep it up!

Even though I have little chance to upcycle at this point in time, I am watching and learning and taking notes so that when I do get some free time, I can make beautiful pieces. The one-of-a-kind aspect is so rewarding, as it is when someone asks where you bought it, and you get to share a bit of the history of the piece as you know it.
Keep up what you do, Catherine - most of us love you the way you are!

Dear Catherine. YOU are the person who inspired me to upcycle/recycle my wardrobe. I rarely buy new clothing any more because of you❤. I am a quilt maker at heart, but am thrilled to be using my sewing machines and serger to create a unique wardrobe from clothing purchased at a thrift store or found in the back of my closet. You are an amazing person! Keep on inspiring all of us who "get" what you are doing.

We do live in a "throw away" world and we need to be better. We throw away food because we buy too much and it goes off, we throw out perfectly good cars because we want a new one, furniture because we want to keep up with the Jones's and of course clothes because we want the latest fashions. Anything we can do to improve even one little bit of any of these things, is a win. It's good of you to remind us to keep trying and why. I thank you 😊

I really think the issues with cheap clothes should be taught in schools.
I have learnt so much from your films, I even started again sewing after 25 years. Because you transferred the fun you are having by sewing all this garments to me. And last but not least the satisfaction having created something nice and wearable for a fraction of shop-bought clothes is immense.

As a crafter/sewer, a lot of my supplies come from thrift/second hand stores. Every Mon. my favorite store rotates stock by making a colored tag $1. Yes, coats, sweaters, jeans, shirts, linens, at $1. Even better is fill a tall kitchen trash bag for $1! Washed with sanitizer they are ready to go. This is the last chance before the trash. I have a clear conscience and even feel good reusing these items. Fabric flower brooches, sweater pillow covers, tote bags, quilts, and yes even clothes. Adult with a rip or stain can be cut down to child size taking advantage of the existing hem, buttons, and pockets. It is fun to take the scraps from the shirt and using them to embellish the bottoms, make a scrunchie, or a fabric flower headband. I donate them to other charities. 😊

Hahaha...I will never understand why people don't just move on from a channel if they don't like the content...FFS. 😆 I have been thrifting for over 45 years, from teen to raising my two kids on my own. My daughter and granddaughter have both learned the great value of thrifting not only clothes but household items as well. Of course, there are things I would never thrift. I started gathering remnants and fabrics during 2020-2022 to keep busy during those interesting years and have made tote bags, shopping bags, and aprons. There are so many gorgeous fabrics out there that need a new life/use. I agree with you Catherine...it is a fun and creative outlet to keep the brain cells challenged! 😉 God bless and have fun!

Case in point....I had a very nice knit top that had a very tight turtle neck and very long sleeves. Thanks to your video, I converted the turtle neck into a vee neck and chopped off the sleeves at 3/4. Now I love the top. I would post a picture, but don't see any place to do that. Thank you and keep up the good work. We love you.

I also hate fast fashion because of all of the reasons you state and because, at least the last time I happened to look at new clothing, so much of the fabric felt awful, what I can only describe it as like plastic. Besides, I can never find clothing that fits me and is comfortable 🫤.
I also, in the last few years, have begun to think that buying new fabric is part of the sustainability problem. For better or for worse, I have over the years accumulated a very large stash of fabric that I can use to sew any clothing I need. So before I think of buying anything, even thrifting, it is definitely time to use what I have.
Right now I am in the middle of fixing a shirt that I sewed myself that didn’t fit well (too big) using some of your very helpful and confidence building techniques 😁. Getting a good fit is not easy even when sewing it all myself 🤨🧐.

Exactly! I volunteer weekly at a local thrift store and I am amazed at the amount of donations that are discarded. They assure me that the discards are either recycled or sent elsewhere but I have my doubts. The discards are just tossed into green garbage bags and picked up by a large truck. I have volunteered in other thrift stores that actually wash and fix some of the items but those stores are rare. Glad you are putting the message out there and helping us to save the planet in our own small ways!

  • @KristinaHoneyHavenFarm

Thrifting is also great for those of us who do not like fashion trends. I have always had my own "style," and actually find it easier to find something I like thrifting versus in a big store. When we were young, either our clothes were homemade or they usually came from the thrift store, so I have lots of positive memories about thrifting. I have decluttered my closets of my current size, and then got into upcycling; this means lots of my old favorite clothes will be getting upsized and upcycled. That may be the best part of upcycling: getting to keep wearing your favorites in some way.

My recently widowed friend and I used your videos to rework the necklines on her husband’s cashmere jumpers to make them more feminine. She wears them all the time as it helps her to feel connected to him. We also used his t-shirts to make patchwork memory cushions for his grandchildren and nearest and dearest. She and I spent some lovely afternoons sewing, chatting and remembering her husband. I resolved a few years ago not to buy any new clothes (I’ve only bought a pair of decent hiking socks). I am currently wearing my son’s socks, underpants made from a t-shirt, my husband’s shorts, a t-shirt gift and a sweatshirt that my daughter was donating…..the only item that is my own is my bra! Thank you for your inspiration. I wholeheartedly agree with your ethos.
